Shoutout to the people that got to play the flexitone for half a measure in band
Nightmare Before christmas :p
I get to play it for half the song
I get to play it for 2 measures
@@68tw38 Lucky
Cartoon Power got to play it for like 1 measure in my bands Halloween event lol
The fire extinguisher is also useful when the beat gets too hot. Or when you're playing in a burning building idk.
Magisteerium it's empty
Ethan Olson oh really
I think the drummer from August Burns Red should use this lol
Guess that would've been useful for the drummer of Great White lmao
damn son. that got dark
So THATS where those noises in the San Andreas themesong came from!!!
Flexi-tone sounds like the intro of GTA: San Andreas.
It is
Bryan Bello exactly what i thought
Bryan Bello heh
Bryan Bello I thought it was more like insane In the membrane

I like how you put all of the stupid logos on them, that was the funniest part
One year in marching band I got injured and couldn't march so they put me in pit as aux. percussion. Most of the time it was normal things like cowbell or hi hats but for one song during the percussion feature I had 4 measures of just brake drum and for all of band camp no one believed that that's what I was actually supposed to play until our director showed them the scores for 4 measures of solid brake drum
yeah brake drums are pretty useful in a marching standpoint
everytime I hear the Flexi-Tone it reminds me of GTA San Andreas lol
David Ortega me too hahahah
That’s what that sound is a flexi tone
Oh my god me too
Welcome to San Andreas I’m cj from grove street, land of the hangas gang bangas and cold heat.......
The saw blades surprised me. But I actually liked the brake drum sound a lot tbh. PART TWO!!!!
Dan Brazilian my school uses "brake drums" in concerts sometimes
Dill Pickle Same! Mine also uses them during marching band in the front ensemble.
I actually call for brake drum in my own compositions, although it's usually "performed" with a sample.
Was used almost 80 years ago by Cage...

Love how the stick caddy died a little everytime it was hit
I'm getting one of those HHX Fire Extinguishers next time I'm at Guitar Center.
Count me in
No Name irritates meh
I already tried that but they gave me a HHX sticker and directions to a fire station
Ha
I’ll try to get one
+David Smith I don't know if you'll see this because I can't reply to your comment. So you're telling me a bass drum is more unusual than all of this stuff? Just because it's a marching bass drum doesn't change the fact that it's still a bass drum. You obviously missed the point of this video. *"Weird Percussion Instruments"* is a marching bass drum weird? Also, if these instruments aren't percussion instruments then what are they? Brass? Nope. Woodwinds? Nope. Strings? Nope. Anything can be considered a percussion instrument if you hit. I could play on a jar of mayonnaise and it would be considered a percussion instrument.
+rdavidr Anything is a percussion instrument of you can hit it. Great video!
please make another, and put mayonnaise in it just so we can prove that Patrick was right all along that Mayonnaise is indeed an instrument.
Squidward says: no David mayonnaise is NOT an instrument
+M3RK CHAOS (son of discord) But horse radish is though.
yup part 2 would be pretty cool!
What about the slide whistle? Percussionists play them all the time!
Stop giving Lars Ulrich ideas
Honestly. It'd be a change of pace.
He could use some ideas. lol
Lara can’t have ideas
I need to make this 3 comments on a 1K liked comment.
This is another video from the vault that I never uploaded for whatever reason... Just trying to get my Glenn Kotche on haha
rdavidr Hi! I play drum set for the Powhatan Marching Band and I saw you at the fall classic on Saturday. I was rehearsing and didn't get a chance to meet you but I just wanted to tell you that you have been a huge influence and inspiration throughout my short career as a drummer:)
rdavidr part two would be p cool
rdavidr nice
o
rdavidr
Brake drums are common in steel band/ soca/ calypso music. I've definitely used a tick holder before. I'm also a fan of Dafnis Prieto's frying pan.
1:36 that thing is in the theme for GTA San Andreas
+AdmiralEspo damn i was thinking which gta theme has it lol
Never heard that before
Those sawblade sound Kinda dope
Sawblades
Saw
Blades
1:24
Holy shit GTA San Andreas memories when the intro started I would just watch without skipping, that was the only game I wouldn't skip the intro of.
The flexi-tone got me tripping sooooo dang hard. Also, the whole concept is brilliant, love it!
The caddy sounds surprisingly good, it could become a thing around Vic Firth artists.
Cheers!
Saw blades FTW.
I would love to see Part 2 BTW.
Dave, you're a bad ass!
I liked the saw blades best.
briansmobile1 he sure is
2:25 well that was the first and most likely the last time i have ever seen anyone play the bosonova using a scuba tank...
My high school's band class somehow got the charts for the Theme from Terminator (timely, then). The percussion score specifically called for "brake drum." Y'know, for the TI-TINK TINK TI-TINK rhythm figure (I wanna say it was in 5/4)?
Yes vote for Part 2!
the Terminator theme was in 13/16 in the first movie, but 6/8 in the second movie
The scuba tank is really good for latin gigs.
Yes as said in the video
Ya don't say
1:25
Welcome to San Andreas, I'm CJ from Grove Street,
Land of the heinous, gangbangers, and cold heat...
My favourite was the scuba tank for sure... but the funniest one was definetly the Flexi-tone just because you look like you're afraid of it. Seriously, your face looks as if you were shaking a venomous snake to me. Anyways, amazing video as always.
I would say you should have done a trash can but then I remembered that Lars Ulrich already did that.
So did the Astros lol
I met your channel like 30 minutes ago, watched all the drum bass beater videos and this one, man your videos are so dope, love it
sorry my messy english
0:55 unreleased death grips drum track
I like the HHX-tinguisher :)
Btw the brake drum is if I remember correctly just a piece of the wheel of a car. We used one in concert season in our school band
The sawblades actually worked really well for a ride, weird..
1:26 Oh that's the name of the instrument who made the Iconic GTA theme?
Thought the same
Whitechapel would be proud of the first one
The saw is the law
Was just thinking that.. Three years later and your comment rings true
My favorites:
1. Brake drum. Nice projection!
2. Fire extinguisher. Nice projection!
3. Saw blade. Decent projection.
These three project nicely
when they're mic'ed for recording,
and for live shows.
#1 and #2 can hold their own
with or without mics depending on
the size of the venue, but a simple
overhead mic setup can still
capture them.
All the other percussive objects
are best used in a recording
session...
...when the song is performed live,
substitute with the louder percussive
objects (of similar sound, if possible).
Of all these percussive objects,
my top favorite is the brake drum.
It cuts through the mix loud
and clear.
Would love to see and hear
more videos with it!
Overall, outstanding video and
demonstration as always! 👍
I use an old bike wheel on my kit. You can get lots of cool clangy noises out of it, also can spin it around and drag your stick on the spokes for a neat sound.
@1:25 anyone remember San Andreas?
Sawblade, definitely.
Scuba tank is my favorite and that was a valiant attempt to get melody AND rhythm out of a flexi-tone.
0:51 I bring drumsticks to school and I always hit these fire extinguishers
I liked the saw blade and the brake drum most of all :)
A musicial water polo player? *Someone just like me finally...* (I've been waiting a long time my brother)
The saw blade just might be the greatest thing I've ever seen on a drum kit! I have gone through a ton of them over the years working construction/demolition and have never thought to hit one let alone use one as a percussion instrument. Thank you!
that saw blade flat ride was actually pretty cool. plus those grooves on the scuba
10' saw blade wins it all.
Dude! I dig the saw blades and the brake drum. How did you mount the brake? I've got one but the damn thing is so heavy. My fav oddball in my kit is a 5" alarm bell. That thing adds a perfect ping
snare stand
rdavidr sweet. Thanks. Keep on, brother!
rdavidr you should set up a MEGA kit for shits and giggles.
I used to use a fullsize milk jug, and 2 GM automotive 80's air cleaner lids when I started. That was my ride and crashes for about 3 years.
All fun and games until your fire extinguisher goes flying out your window
I actually have a brake tone at my school and we use a hammer to hit it
Why just why
Frigid Gaming I don’t know why but we used it in one piece it sounds awesome
I'm from Brazil and i'm a drummer,so your samba i'ts not bad bro kkkkk
fiquei surpreso em ver o samba no video dele haha
I pulled out my dad's 40 year old scuba tank and mounted it with conga stands. It sounds so good we've started using it for recording. It's like a lower toned giant cowbell.
The break drum was pretty cool, but the flexi-tone killed it!!!
1:25 Anyone thought of the sound effect in Dragon Ball Z when they heard this😂
Hash Hax yes
No more like the beginning of GTA San Andreas
who else wants to get david to 100000 subs
Haha! That Stick Caddy slowly slipping away.
The saw blade was my favorite!!
0:14 drumming for edgelords.
The flexitone is used in a band piece called Africa, a song, a ceremony, and a ritual by Robert w. Smith
Well... now I know what we’ll do when we change our Mustang from drum brakes to disc brakes
I've seen motor boat propellers used on a kit (the ultimate ride "PING") but never a sawblade. That sounded great!
Ah the Brake Drum. The go-to "I need to be louder than a 100 other people" drum.
1:25 oh shit thats what they use in the san andreas theme, the flexitone
I remember playing a flexatone solo at the Barbican as part of my orchestra, it is one of the most embarrassing things I’ve ever had to do
The scuba tank makes cowbells seem like a good life hack!
The lid of my family's rice pot sounds very nice when it's held from the handle only and hit.... almost like a tuning fork! ahahaha
I once used a softball bat on a trailer hitch in a recording session to sound like a dramatic "hammer hitting nails." it worked great!
My favorites were definitely the saw blade, brake drum, fire extinguisher and scuba tank.
Subscribed! I'm discovering new beats and horizons from this channel!
*Me walking into church*
Me: Dont mind me, just walkin in with my scuba tank.
The Saw Blade and Scuba Tank were actually pretty sick
The fire extinguisher sounds really great, can't wait to try myself.
0:31
All I hear is: I NEED MORE COWBELL!!!
I certainly drew that industrial ping sound out of my vater stick caddy.
The saw blades sounded pretty good, and there isn't much other use for them once they're worn out.
Brake drums aren't that strange, they're actually called for in concert band percussion scoring (and orchestral as well, I believe), or can be used as substitutes for anvils.
The fire extinguisher and scuba tank sound like a cowbell or agogo bell, but much larger and much heavier. I can't see the advantage there. I suppose if one were hooked to a bass drum pedal (with a hard beater), the extra weight might help keep it from walking away, but otherwise it looks like a solution without a problem.
My marching band pit actually had a brake drum as an instrument and yes it got use
Love how he just had a scuba tank
The saw blades were my favourite. Part two would be awesome.
that flexi-tone sure is weird, cant stop laughing listening to it.
Dude, the saw blade and the scuba tank sounded really cool
I have a bike rim on my kit. It's an interesting dry sound and you can use the spokes as tuned percussion
Probably gonna do the saw blades once I get my personal kit together, they work surprisingly well
I think I remember using something like that brake drum in high school band years ago. It was on a song that called for an anvil, so I used a hammer to hit it! It's a tie for my two favorite instruments here. The flexi-tone was probably the most amusing one to me for obvious reasons, but the fire extinguisher had what I think is the most useful sound effect musically speaking.
“Weird percussion instruments” said every industrial band
The flexitone hi-hat groove was sweet, dude!
yo man this is dope. reminds me of back in the early 2000s when my brother and I went to the local junkyard, each with a pair of drum sticks, and just started hitting everything we saw. anything that sounded cool we paid for and took home. those brake drums are zil-bel level loud!
There are honestly some pieces of music that actually call for a brake drum. We played a few when I was in band in high school
The Saw Blades Are Awesome! I'll Have to Give it a Try For a Cover when I get my mics set up.
Pls youtube. It's 2am pls let me go to sleep. Why must you always show me these videos in the night?
1:10 My VADER stick caddy is the only cowbell I've ever used. Never had a complaint. Only the periodic: "Where's your cowbell at?"
I've always had a brake drum on my drumset. It's great when you need a bit of an industrial "clang".
Absolutely part 2!
I just picked up the spoons. maybe some quirky alternatives or variations on the spoons or other handheld percussion instruments.
The flexitone is amazing!
Do more of these I love them! My favorite was the scuba tank.
The circle saws was actually pretty creative
Who needs a cowbell when you have a fire extinguisher
you: *drums on fire extinguisher*
fire extinguisher: *fucking explodes*
My mans got a water polo shirt, played water polo in highschool, respect.
Our mallet band actually used those AAX Brake Discs in a music piece. It's a pretty percussion instrument :)
The "K" saw blades. A cut above ordinary drum playing.
I loved the saw blades! Do more
Fire extinguisher. Had the best groove.
