    Never skip the monologue , what a poet

  • @miguelangelvega7176
    @miguelangelvega7176 Před 4 lety +1146

    Towards the end in the monologue she says "I believe in the kindness of strangers" which is a quote from the character Blanche from 'A Streetcar Named Desire." In the play Blanche is a beautiful, middle-aged woman who is afraid of aging, and was known for being with different men. Once exposed, everyone turns on her and she has a breakdown. That line, she says in the arms of a doctor who is taking her away (infront of her own sister who does not try to stop it) to a psychiatric ward. Blanche looks at the doctor, who is actually nice to her unlike everyone else and says "Whoever you are, I have always depended on the kindness of Strangers."

      I've always thought that Music to Watch Boys to was also a subtle reference to A Streetcar Named Desire. It's not only a song that directly follows the theme of the play, feeling like men come and go despite deep desire and want for them to stay, it also mentions flamingos (like the flamingo hotel where Blanche stays for a while). It's enlightening to realize other references, maybe I'm not crazy after all!

    I remember when I used to be so obsessed with this monologue that as an English major in university I would casually throw in bits of her phrasing, “dashed and divided”; “chameleon soul”; “inner indecisiveness that was as wide and as wavering as the ocean” into essays. I just loved her so much-this video inspired my whole life aesthetic despite not being an American 😂 desire for freedom is universal ❤️

    You hit the nail on the head. You got emotional because, sure, it isn't necessarily her actions that we relate to, but rather the reasons behind them that we so can. It is about that desperate need to figure out who you are, feeling like a chameleon because there are so many possibilities. This often leads to decisions that many would deem as crazy, but you knew you needed to experience it to discover something about yourself that was hiding in the dark, just waiting to be shown. You getting emotional made me emotional and brought me back to when I saw Ride for the very first time. I thought the same thing as you, that it is absolutely one of the best music videos of ALL time, and I still think it to this day. Simply beautiful reaction.

      This! When I watched the video for the first time it was also the first time I heard the song. I can't relate with the exact actions itself, nor is English my first language, but the feelings emoted in the monologue, in the song and in conjunction with the video made me cry a lot. I felt so much and connected to it on a deep level. I still get very emotional when I listen to the song or watch the video and the monologue always hits me as hard as the first time.

    I just feel she’s really misinterpreted, the media pushes the storyline of her trying to glamorise what they call the anti feminist women (self destructive) like ‘Marilyn Monroe’ etc but I think she was trying to giving a voice to those women and to humanise the women tend to be demonised by society when they are people in pain and are just trying to live ... and that’s why you got emotional, you have empathy Jon!

    I always felt like this song was a metaphor for “just keep going”. When your mind is not at peace, you feel that conflict even more so when you’re stagnant. You shut down, and get lost in the battles with the different demons and traumas from your past. Most people go for walks, or go work out, to “let off some steam”, but this song just paints the picture of finding that release on the road. Maybe a car ride may do it for some, but the rush of the wind, the feeling of flying is incomparable. The various men in the video are also seeking the same release, an escape from whatever torments them. A chance to feel uninhibited, and not alone; be it anonymously with a lover, or in a crowd of others who create the safe-space for them to do so. Her melancholy and loneliness ultimately follow her with every man, every situation she found herself in, but these moments were a surge of electricity for her. Momentary, maybe, but always looking for more. In constant danger of finding more trouble. Risky, but thrilling. Crazy. The dichotomy of freedom and being shackled to a fight within us we so vehemently run from. For her, freedom is in those moments. On that bike. With those men. With those road dogs. In the open air, her issues gone with the wind.
    We all have our escapes, our releases. We all get tired of feeling fucking crazy. That’s why this song resonates. A reminder to just ride.

    It's so stunning and wonderful to see someone reacting to this video and song as a work of art, and not trying to work out how much of it is 'real' or 'authentic'. There is a lot that I think you noticed on this video that is symbolic and adds to the artistry - the interchangability of the men; the way that Lana is centred constantly in the images; the way that every character in the video is supportive of her as a human. The other two videos that go really deep into this territory are 'National Anthem' and 'Tropico' (which is 3 songs from Paradise turned into a mini movie). I can't wait to see you react to those too.

    I agree. This is an intricately carved little story/video that gets down to the heart level. Basic wants and needs. Beautifully done.

    I loved this reaction and agree that while I can't personally relate to some of Lana's songs, she can make me feel like I do. That is what's so special about her music, it makes you feel

    Your reaction made me so emotional I almost cried. When I saw you starting to get emotional I almost lost it clicked away. So pure and so excellent and true to your emotions ohmyghod. This is the Lana Del Rey experience I had 7 years ago. I to cried.

    Top reaction as always. :) As for getting emotional - I always have to cry at the monologues whenever I watch this clip, don't exactly why but the words and Lana#s voice really gets me in my feelings here. For me it's her best song and best video.

    You are into for such a treat with her videos! Almost all of them are a well thought out, high production, cinematic experiences. Tropico is mindblowingly good and Freak is worth a watch too. Whatever you choose from her repertoire you probably won’t go wrong. Young and beautiful is a soundtrack to Great Gatsby, I can’t remember if it’s on her albums and if you’ve heard it, but if you haven’t you should. It’s a nice video too.

    You absolutely have to react to the “Tropico” and “National Anthem” music videos. They’re both lengthier, but truly ART
