The first time I ever heard Lana was in this video and I was hooked! Beautiful imagery, even if it may not be as theatrical as the later music videos. I know everyone is a tropico stan but Young & Beautiful and Chelsea Hotel No. 2 both have lovely videos AND you haven’t heard those songs yet! They’re two of my fave songs by her, and they don’t require dipping into the unreleased pool quite yet

This has always been one of my favorite music videos. The first time I watched through to the end, my interpretation was that the scenes in the palace are her in heaven after the crash.

Well Lana already confirmed that that’s what it is, yep. She had this idea of a queen living in a heavenly Romanian castle, sitting on her throne, recalling all the times she had with her lover. And obviously in the video, she wanders the halls, opens two large doors, and walks into the white light. It’s pretty obvious.

I love this music video. I recommend you to watch "Blue Jeans" now, I think it should be the next stop after this. The guy from this music video is there again. I consider them as kind of twin videos, both very beautiful and probably about the same guy, as many of Lana's songs are.
Before you watch the related music videos let me say: the story is the girl and the guy were in love when they were young but soon the girl dies (in btd) and later the guy gets old but sees young Lana everywhere.
Many people misunderstand the music videos specially for shades of cool and think Lana’s lover is older than her.
Yeah sometimes it can be confusing because the videos are pretty different Aesthetics yet once yk everything clicks 😭
Lana's work is based on eras. born to die tells a different story from Shades Of Cool, cause the videos are from two different eras. Ultraviolence and Born to die

I’ll never forget the feeling, I had when I saw this video for the first time, this is the first Lana song I ever heard. Took me to places other musicians couldn’t. Her Poetry her lyrics just wow 🤩 ❤️

The video, other than the ‘’lonely queen’’ concept, is also the illustration of a toxic relationship, which is why he appears behind her mimicking slashing his throat, why he doesn’t pay attention while he’s driving and causes the accident etc. This idea of a love so strong that it becomes toxic and dangerous. She said the song/album was also about her sobriety/alcohol addiction, so you could see it as a metaphor for that too.

[@yeah] Its mainly just an interpretation, I don’t know why so many people keep saying it like it’s true.
Lana has said the BTD video is about a woman in a heaven-like castle recalling memories of being with her lover, which implies that she’s “dead”... but Lana has never specifically stated “I’m a ghost in the video, and it’s about how I died”. It’s more artistic and metaphorical than that cheap explanation.

I think that video was trying to convey her being in this life she never thought she’d be in and that she’s not happy with. But hey, it’s life. Then obviously she dies.
Her being in the mansion is like her being in purgatory. Just waking up in this bed alone, when she could have sworn the last time she was in bed was with him with his hand around her throat(which made her feel safe in a life she never thought she’d be in). She wonders around the mansion which is like the life she maybe always wanted. Until she walks through the bright white door and moves on to her “heaven”. Which is her holding him forever.
It’s quite poetic. But idk, maybe I’m high lol.
