  • Richard Keys, Trish Williamson, Anne Diamond, Mike Morris, and Gordon Honeycomb all show up in this decently long-ish clip of TV-am from Friday, 12th February, 1988. There are two news bulletins - and, though they both start the same, they are different, so don't go skipping - and three ad breaks (Transformers, Battle Beasts, and Swinton car insurance specifically for "lady drivers" caught my eye the most) to get your teeth into, plus the opening of Good Morning Britain, which promises a lot but unfortunately the tape runs out before we really get into it. Sorry about that.
So anyway, job cuts at Ford, a European budget crisis, nurses and other healthcare workers annoyed at the NHS being throttled, one of President Reagan's advisers turning out to be crooked, Man City and Liverpool seemingly trying to outdo each other in entirely the wrong way, an earthquake in California... but, best of all, the launch of a new space program that promised a permanent space station, a mission to Mars, and a base on the moon by "early next century". I can't wait for the oh-so-futuristic year 2000.
One tiny piece of uninteresting trivia: Eddy Grant (mentioned as a guest coming on later) had opened the previous night's edition of Top of the Pops with his latest hit Gimme Hope Jo'anna.
Grateful thanks to Ben for providing this recording - please take the time to check out / benriggers when you get the chance.

Critical moment in TV-am's history. After the weekend, Bruce Gyngell sacks every one of the strike supporting workers. Probably the lowest ebb in the station's history, though there's tough competition for that title. We see a somewhat stabilized show, here. It's not an ideal offering, at least not from the IBA's point of view, but they'd gotten somewhat competent at providing a basic news bulletin, Batman and adverts. Which doesn't sound impressive, but it's a hell of an improvement over when the strike first hit some three months earlier. They'd at least learned not to attempt any kind of camerawork, other than locked-off fixed positions. There were quite literally canteen ladies operating cameras. Irony is, the viewing figures actually saw a significant increase during the strike. There was no real content for the hosts to deliver, they were basically just padding. But people liked it, for some reason.

I could be wrong, but it seems that people turned up to see a car crash, but ultimately stayed because, in time, it just became more 'real' and cosy than the polished competition the Beeb were providing. Possibly.

@@VideotapeFTW BBC Breakfast Time by 1988 was an utter borefest. In November 1986 they reformatted BBC Breakfast Time from a cosy warm breakfast show, to cold as ice, hard nose, hard news driven agenda show. Totally off putting for most of us, waking up, bleary eyed and lacking in energy at 7am. Most of us want to be gently eased into the morning, and not over stuffed with news and politics. BBC didn't understand that, TV-am did.
