So, I think Basha actually has a crush on Amity. At the very least, on some level, she treasured her friendship with Amity more then she realized. She was a bit hurt when Amity started hanging out with Luz and even started dating. She popped up every now and then just to try and get Amity’s attention. It probably hurt even more that Amity never truly saw Basha as friend to begin with.
Also, WHAT HAPPENED TO ALADORE?! We saw Ed and Em have a wholesome sibling moment with Amity and we even saw her mother with the collector. What about Aladore? Is he ok?

I think The Collector being somewhat harmless was on purpose, as long as he play "the owl house" with King he won't be too dangerous, and that them saying _"I want to play a new game"_ is him just breaking free of the "safe box" King put them in with the play pretend game

I think what makes the collector seems less threatening Is that he's a Chaotic Neutral character. He's not inherently evil, he's just an overpowered child. His intentions of having fun is pure and the threat he gives mostly coming from how unpredictably powerful & easily manipulated he is. And put that next to Belos, a Lawfully Evil character that we understand his evil plan, corrupted intentions and his power: a flesh sucking monster that possess people. Can't top that.
Villain wise I think the whole series is focusing on Belos as the main antagonist. And yes, kikimora is just a side antagonist joke to help the story progression imo.

    • @Cegg960
      @Cegg960 Před rokem +37

I agree. I think the fact that he’s not actively rampaging the country side turning everyone into puppets is more in line with his character anyway. He’s a child so his little minion star monster bringing him “toys” makes more sense. He doesn’t actively care about getting new ones as long as he’s still having fun with whatever game he’s playing. If he gets a new doll awesome but its not like he really wants or needs them. I’m also surprised no one brought up the rest of the bed time story. Collectors of the past possibly killed each other or were killed for interfering with mortals? The poem seems to say that he’s literally meant to be god, to keep all of creation in a zoo like environment to ensure its survival. Who wrote that story? Other collectors? Titans that killed them?

    • @nicholasrowland5899
      @nicholasrowland5899 Před rokem +36

@@Cegg960 I think that line was meant to imply the opposite. That if mortals interfere in the Collectors' affairs, they will kill them all. I can understand why the Collector appears underwhelming due to the ominous buildup he had in earlier episodes. However, that doesn’t make me any less nervous about what he plans to do in the finale. I also don’t mind that the resolution might be found in a single conversation b/c honestly the lack of communication has been the root of most of the problems in this show. So talking is a reliable theme. In addition, I think the way to deal with the Collector has always been to shoot first ask questions later so a little compassion would go a long way.

After escaping and killing the witch, Hansel and Gretel wondered the world until (as adults) they emigrated to our world with the rest of the fairytale characters in New York. There they discovered that the witch had survived and is now under amnesty for her crimes. Gretel stayed in the fables' community, but Hansel refused and instead went to Europe where he became a witch hunter. Years later Hansel retired to New York to find that not only had his sister befriended the witch, but had also started practicing magic with her. Hansel said "Oh dear God! Satan, unable to attack me directly, strikes at me through my own sister!" and then he killed her.

Actually, Kikimiki and Boscha had some utility in this chapter.
Yeah, kiki is everything but a menace and Boscha is only a Bully, but considering that this chapter had FINALLY some focus on Willow, they need something to make her explode, that's why Boscha is here, to be mean and help Willow explode, but considering that this is a critical situation, there was some small, really small possibility that Boscha had some "development" offscreen, so we need something that ensures she not only remain mean, but also static so she can "develop" in this episode, and here is where Kiki enters the stage.
She wants to survive, so she used some kid to gain some power and feel strong for once, then they use her to separate the group, and that way we have our 3 scenes: Willow crying, Boschamity one-sided, and Luz finally being understood.
So, those two are not characters but tools to move the plot forward.
There was a better way? Absolutely, but considering there's no time to waste, better use those two and give them a small role to help the main group

Honestly, I think it was smart to use Boscha. There were past episodes that were entirely dedicated to her being the antagonist to the rest of the group, so it makes sense to use her to move the plot in this one. I do think the sudden abandonment issues came a bit out of nowhere, but it does make sense in the context of a kid who lost their family and closest friends to what's basically an apocalyptic event. She probably thought Amity was puppeted/dead too, so she wanted to grab on and not let go to this piece of her old life that suddenly came back.

And Kiki NEEDS to be in this episode because I NEEDED to see Luz's mom beam her in the face with a wooden bat. I honestly needed that more than the new ship sailing - and I was all about Hunter FINALLY getting some kind of happiness in his miserable life.

Thinking about these last two specials of The Owl House, I realized that the structure and pacing of these episodes remind me of when an anime will have a recap movie that condenses a season of the show into a feature film running time. These episodes feel like recap specials that are condensing content worthy of multiple episodes and just focuses on the important story beats of the season. Even though I am impressed that these episodes were able to have impactful storytelling and phenomenal character progression and execute them pretty well within the timeframe provided, I feel like this season (and the latter half of season 2 to an extent) won't be able to escape the stigma of condensed stories and cut content that show audiences that more was clearly planned for the series but the staff weren't able to follow through on these ideas.

It really is crazy how despite being in the show for far less time + only having a handful of interactions, Hunter has a deeper bond with Gush and Willow than Luz does. Willow character get more development is what was needed and yesterday's episode helped with that.
Season 2 was 40% lumity, 20% hunter, 20% King and 20% everything else
Seaosn 3 episode 1: 50% luz and Camila, 40% hunter, 6% amity (she convinced the others to keep looking for a way back to the demon world and she came up with he idea to tell luz at a costume party), the other 4% is gus, willow and V
Seaosn 3 episode 2: 50% Camila and luz, 30% hunter, willow and gus, 19% king and collector, 1% amity for convincing bosha to switch sides and help the gang

I get some of your points. I have personally loved both episodes. Because this is a character driven show/episode, I think it did make sense to show KiKi and Bosha the way they are here. They're both characters who want to have authority and command over others. I recall Amity saying in the grudgeby match episode Bosha's identity became tied into being the captain figure. When she lost her team, it looked like she didn't know what to do. Having Kiki by her side to round people up, and Amity to relive some of her "glory days" made Bosha desperately want familiarity back. I also think Bosha refused to admit she was hurt when Amity initially left the pack. I also suspect that the lovely art we get in the credits is trying to serve a bit more story/context as the creators of the show know they don't have alot of time to tell certain tidbits of the main and side characters during an episode.

The collector does not like being told no, so being told that "i don't want to play right now" would probably make him do what that scratched out verse in his story book said they're capable of

I literally just watched this episode like an hour ago and this could be the serotonin of the show being back and everything but I LOVED this episode. The only complaints I have really have to do with the suddenness of Kikimora and Boscha and that I wished we got more time with Mattholomule (Mat Tholomule?) which could have both easily been solved if Disney had simply allowed this season to be an actual season.
    So yeah main takeaways-
    1) Camilla: Yes daughter, like you I too used a be a nerd.
    Liz: HOLY SHI-

Ngl it was a pretty okay episode. First, luz’s mom was actually irritating me a little. It’s understandable the shock but it looked more of disgust, and she barely tried to hide it, which contributes to Luz’s feelings of needing to return back. Second, willow and hunter didn’t get the development they deserved. Willow confronted her feelings very briefly and the ship didn’t really get to sail. Luz’s palismen felt like something that happened a little randomly, which is something i’d expect in the more middle of an episode. Third, Boscha didn’t get redeemed. It sucks a little since Boscha is practically the same as before. Lastly, Hunter’s behavior for most of the episode came out of nowhere. I get that he may be scared or fearing what belos has done but he legitimately had no reason (from what I could see, correct me if i’m wrong) to act this way, and it’s almost like a redemption reversal, like he has the attitude of his golden gaurd days. Definetly didn’t expect it and it really just felt out of place. I just think alot was abrupt and the episode felt like someone slapped an ending. It’s such a shame since it had so much potential to be such a classic. All in all, it’s not the best and I think it falls a little below average, compared to some other world-class writing in other episodes the team has done. I totally get the time constraints, but in full honesty, everything just felt out of place with a lack of context. I wish that things were done a bit differently.
I still think the Collector got a really good appearance, but it just felt like we missed too much. Both what happened in the Isles and the many things in the episode that seemed to be briefly mentioned. I get the time constraint but I was just left dissatisfied, and the ending felt very abrupt. It just didn’t come to a soft close, or set anything else up that would leave the viewer in suspense or awaiting the next episode unlike other counterparts. It was just kind of like: “they’re planning stuff, collector”

The collector reminds me if the kid from the episode “it’s a good life” from the twilight zone. In that episode a six year old kid is born with the powers of a god. He can create anything he wants and make anyone who displeases him disappear or transform them into horrible things. He has made the whole world disappear except for his little farm town. All the adults around him, including his parents are terrified of him and will do anything the boy demands in fear of being transformed or disappear. You can feel the fear the adults have for this kid and how they are walking on eggshells cause there is no reasoning or educating an immature child with the powers of a god. I wish we could’ve gotten a bit more of that fear factor with the characters around the collector. Everyone should’ve been terrified of this kid. • @justhereforstolenmemes5391

I kind of agree with the idea that The Collector seems manageable in this episode, but I also want to point out that he had no reason to be pissed off or act out for the whole episode. The entire time the Collector was around he truly and wholeheartedly believed that King was his friend and King was using this to semi-successfully manipulate him to behave himself. The reason why the kids can just hang out at the school without needing to worry all that much is because the collector isn’t Bill Cipher, this isn’t weirdmagedion, truthfully it’s not even really meant to be an apocalypse. He’s not obsessed with world domination and suffering, he doesn’t want to watch the world burn, he just wants to hang out and play games. He has no reason to care about the people that aren’t bothering him. (This is a personal theory) I think it’s kind of funny and cute that the safest place from The Collector is a School because you would think that such an immature kid would want nothing to do with school and probably wouldn’t go anywhere near it. As for the fact that the world isn’t completely different, why would it be? Him and King have been playing The Owl House this whole time, it would make sense that the setting for that game would just be the Boiling Isles. However, I think we will see the collector going absolutely godmode in the next episode considering that now he’s peeved and King will have no control over him and he has an actual target to point his omnipotent power at.

Seeing Belos’ Wendigo form (that’s what I’m calling it personally) gradually decay throughout the episode was AMAZING! Watching parts of his limbs fall off into green sludge, as he desperately clawed his way back to the Grimwalker Crypt was nauseating, chilling, unnerving, pitiful; just a maelstrom of emotions seeing this man-who’s barely human at this point-completely hellbent on finishing something he started lifetimes ago. Even after the Day of Unity he planned for centuries failed, and as his body’s quite literally falling apart on him, expiring well past its due, he’s. still. GOING.
It really makes you wonder, even if he HAD made it to the Portal Door before he’d regressed to his monster form in “King’s Tide,” if the devoured palismen had such a horrific effect on his body…what was the endgame gonna be if he had successfully made it back to the human realm? He’d have still been on a timer if he didn’t keep devouring them, with a clear lack of inventory on the other side. Luz putting the sigil on his arm during the Draining Spell merely accelerated this regression, but he still would’ve ended up like this a day back among humans without palismen to consume. Let that sink in; THAT’s how desperate this man is to get the final say in something more than 3 centuries old, after the only other parties-his late brother, Caleb, and Caleb’s partner-are long gone.
Edit: Nvm, seems you call Belos’ Monster Form a Wendigo too, at 12:14

DISAGREE about Hexside. The Witch School of Demonics has provided some of my favorite episodes. AGREE that Kikimora is more like a mosquito buzzing in your ear & we could've done without her in an episode where even Eda had just a few minutes of screen time.

Basha is clearly dealing with PTSD. She watched her only two friends get turned into mannequin corpses, and she only survived by pure luck. This would be horrifying for anyone, but it especially messed with Boscha’s image of being the best of the best of the best.
One might think that a Queen-bee, bullying, star jock would flourish in the apocalypse. But Boscha is totally dependent on society, in that it’s titles, trophies and accolades as a lens for their self-worth. (In the same way how Amity once lost her mind and composure in pursuit of a golden sticker awarded to Willow). So Boscha is desperately trying to surround herself with trappings of the old world. Amity is the last surviving member of the Grudgeby team, who were Boscha’s tools for social climbing through competitive sport. But they were also Boscha’s closest friends, though she’s not capable of acknowledging that vulnerability. Not verbally, at least.
It’s an excellent illustration for why some people will reject progress and revolution, and try to hold society back in the state where the working people are at each other’s throats for scraps. It’s not because they themselves are well-off in that kind of society. It’s just that the only viewpoint for their success is being held aloft above their peers, in some way. In a better world where everyone would be given enough to be happy and secure, people like Boscha can’t track their own progress and self-worth.

After watching the episode, I just reallly despise what Disney did to the show. I really love it. The story, characters, and even it's flaws. The only issue I probably had (especially for season 2) was how rushed it was. Because season 3 was scrapped, we missed so much possible stories and it's so upsetting. The writers of the show did an amazing job actually managing to fit a coherent story line from 3 seasons to just 2 seasons and 3 45 minute specials. I honestly attached to Luz's and WIllow's story because they're both so heartfelt and I just felt myself in those seens. I'm happy Luz found how she wanted to be understood because that's more meaningful to a character than just wanting to be a witch and save your friends. And happy this episode gave Willow the proper character development than in season 2, where she was pushed aside.

I think show at some point the crew completly shifted plans for collector as a villian to a just a child. Him snapping at Tera for something less extreme would make him scary but also make him less likebale

About the collector, I think the problem is that it was much easier having him be threatening cause in his introduction, he was against Belos and no one wanted him to live. So without any real villains, it’s difficult to have him keep that same energy as his introduction without hurting fan favorites. At least this way when he does get redeemed, people won’t be so agitated about it.

I believe the reason Collector is so "toned down" is due to the fact that King is holding him back. He's prolly gonna get scarier in Episode 3 but yeah, the way the other characters treated him was.. Unlikely

No shades to the creator and the crew behind TOH, but if you have read the MoringMark comic of TOH about what the Boiling Isle could have been like, you would know that it could have been so freaking cool.
And it still could have kept The Collector as someone everyone is deadly afraid of, and everyone needs to put on a smile and try to appease him

@@andreaniccoli8669 Same, it's so creative. It still gives all the minor characters things to do and a purpose, while amplifying the dystopian feeling of the Boiling Isle wasteland.
Also, there's a freaking rebellion resistance, end Eda's leading it, how cool is that ? It makes the other characters seem stronger and more put together, Eda and Lilith actually have a plan to help save other people, and the whole story doesn't hinge on Luz and the others making their way back to save everyone, because honestly, King's plan isn't working out.

4:47 that actually reminds me of my main issue with this episode: so many side characters, and yet not a single scene with alador? not even in the background, like darius? not even mentioned by his kids? i just don't feel like kikimora is as important of a character as amity's dad, on a purely "who should we be focusing on in the penultimate episode?" basis.

  • @pippastrelle

I think this episode probably got hit the hardest for needing to represent all the episodes that transitioned us from the earth stories to the finale. You can imagine so many of the character arcs and facets of Collector!Boiling Isles being explored in turn. But the one thing I will never critique this show is for being rushed, same with Steven Universe. Because "rushed" as a critique means *feels* rushed and without care. These shows were literally rushed in the sense of not getting their intended time.
Luz and Amity got so much brilliant character growth in the early seasons that, while I wish we could have more time with them now, I still don't mourn it. They're a strong pair and such a good example of a loving yet still-working-it-out couple. One of the best, honestly, I've seen on TV given love interests tend to matter only for the will-they-won't-they.
I'm amazed by how TOH has worked with the gutted seasons and even *improved*, giving the time and arcs to characters I expected to fall by the wayside. I can't believe Hunter, Raine, and Philip were only introduced in Season 2 because they feel so intrinsic to the show. Similarly, the Hunter/Willow/Gus trio was a stroke of brilliance to give them all screentime and development with their central goal of finding friends who see the good in them when they themselves don't.

This guy just preached everything I could’ve said about this episode. I was super disappointed that the collector wasn’t more of a threat, because I was hyped about the idea of a borderline uncontrollable child with no concern for others at all. And I thought the whole hexide trope was kind of a bit of a waste. But then I loved willows little arc and her and hunter are just SO CUTE! I really hope they’ll actually make them get together in the finale.
Overall the episode was good, but not exceptional, but it’s basically excusable just because of the time crunch the team had to deal with when this was supposed to be a whole season long.

i feel like (maybe) Camila will be the one to talk down the Collecter in the finale, and that King will possibly give him François (because of that little moment in this episode). Also i want Hunter to be the one to destroy Belos, and Caleb's spirit is shown smiling/thanking him. It would be amazing if the two finally met for a happy moment in the end.

I get where you’re coming from with the Collector. Out of everyone in the cast, King is the only one who maintains a steady, lowkey terror of this child god. This hurts the Collector’s presence, because even if the Collector isn’t outright hostile, everyone should believe that one misstep equals enslavement, death, or worse. I think in the effort to make the Collector a sympathetic antagonist, the Owl House team overcorrected and dropped how fickle & murder-happy he was shown to be in the season 2 finale.
That said, I feel that it’s fitting that the Collector doesn’t go out of his way to remake most of the Boiling Isles. He could, if he really wanted too (using part of the Titan’s skull to make his castle is clear of that), but the Collector is only interested in playing. He doesn’t exert anymore effort into remaking the environment than he needs to. He’d rather cast illusions than remodel. And who knows, maybe the lack of a complete overhaul indicates some lingering respect for the Titan, as those murals suggest the Collector made friends with the Titans… for a time.
In fact, I swear that’s why Odalia was included in this episode at all. Sure, seeing her play servant and being bossed around after keeping her family under her thumb is cathartic. But her argument that the Collector can remake the Boiling Isles into something bigger, greater, only for the Collector to shoot her down, is like an acknowledgment from the writing staff that, no, he’s not terraforming everything. So shut up asking.
Maybe the Collector (or Belos, if he successfully possesses the Collector) will fully terraform the Titan in the finale, but I feel like it’ll be too little, too late. The finale can only change things & raise the stakes so much in its limited run time. Honestly, it may have been better to use those floating stars & other creations of the Collector more. Have them stalk the Isles more, give some hunter & prey vibes. Something to sell the suspense more. These stars would lack the personality that Boscha & Kikimora provide, but surely the characters could still their moments interspaced with these more suspensive moments.

Honestly, I loved the new episode! The sheer amount I could relate to Willow, throughout the entire series, how she started shy, and became a bada** and would rather comfort others before herself, and how sometimes it all comes crashing down and she looses it a little. Luz feeling understood, her PALISMAN? ADORABLE! Honestly, I also feel a little underwhelmed by the Collector. He should have been way more chaotic, and Boscha and Kikimora kind of need to be thrown in a dumpster the episodes they first showed up in. Also Disney shouldn’t have canceled the series!! We need more time to enjoy the show! Dana and the rest of the crew who work on the series need more time to grow the story, and characters and add the little details. But no. Disney has to cancel yet ANOTHER amazing show! Come on! The episode did amazing for the time it had and all the plot one could possibly cram into one episode. Camilla is a queen, we all love the closeted nerd, and relatable mom.
