  • The used bike market is the hottest it’s ever been. The eBike and traditional bike market are also very big these days. But due to supply demands, there are more and more people looking to buy used electric bikes. I figured it would be cool to make a video talking about some of the different resources, ideas around, and things to look out for or consider when buying and selling used electric bikes.
If I missed anything or you have any questions or concerns, feel free to leave them in the comments below. Thanks for watching!

An option to buy a pre-owned ebike is to call your ebike shop or shops in your town and ask if they have a rental fleet. They might be interested in selling some of their ebikes especially if they are bringing new ones on board. One of the local shops where I live has recently sold their ebike rental fleet in order to refresh it with new ebikes. Worth the call for a bit of savings and a lower entry point into ebike ownership.

Chris. Great video! I think you hit all the major factors to consider when selling a used e-bike. Good tips on measuring battery life and how the bike was ridden. If you get a program figured out for upgrading every few years, please let me know.

    Hey Chris!
    Awesome tips, as usually :)
After the video, I still want to ask one question, please: what's your position on trade ins (giving their used bicycle) to lower the price tag of a new bicycle? Can that be a reasonable business practice for an ebike shop?

A tip for sellers: If you let someone take a test ride, get their drivers license and take a photo of them on the bike. Otherwise a scammer can just ride away with your bike!

no test rides i will refund you 100% if you return the bike in same condition within 10 minutes. every minute after cost $150 i would let them know upfront im not there to make freinds just don't want to get ripped off same with motorcycle.

@@DOFT.mp4 a decent e bike would so easily outrun a car. You can't drive your car through people's lawns or through pedestrian areas.

A lot of people buy new online, and are later looking to upgrade because of dissatisfaction with fit or features, so the used market is going to be HUGE soon. The idea of a pre owned dealer sounds awesome, especially for some of these models that would otherwise not be able to be test ridden.

Would really go for the bike shop instead of one of the platforms, where you have no idea who/what you are dealing with. Most problems can be found [fixed] by the professionality and knowledge of those, and they can do a better estimate of the real value: users tend to overprice their belongings.
The battery is certainly a thing with buying second hand, have my bike now about 8500km [5300mi] and wanted to make some bigger trips, so bought a second powerpack: the range of the old one is about 85% of the new, so even with (relative low) use the capacity dropping pretty much.
And with a bike of several years old, make sure you still can buy those parts (since a lot of custom made) before you buy.

How do you make sure you don’t get ripped off when people come to look and test ride. At least with a car you can ride with the potential buyer. But how do you keep someone from test riding and simply taking off with it? We have two we need to sell/trade am I’m terrified of them being stolen. 😢

I would ask that they bring an ID and credit card for you to hold. or maybe an id and their phone. I have heard of some people meeting at a police station. I also put air tags in all my bikes so that helps

Our city police encourage craigslist buyers and sellers to meet AT the police department. If your police department doesn't encourage this, you might give them a call and see what they think.
