I had measles in 1952ish. I don't remember it because I was in the hospital for a week in a coma. I'm told I almost died. That's the hard way to get lifetime immunization. I don't recommend it.

I had measles around 1957 and still remember it. possible blindness so u were in a dark room 2 weeks. no tv no reading and you were so sick that it didn't matter. possible heart problems. i came thru it ok but no way would i risk my kids contracting it. I'm happy when science improves my life. let's enjoy it. talk to someone who went thru measles before you decide. I'm 100 percent sure no one would agree with scorning a vaccine

1949 here, when I was seven, and I was lucky, with just the boredom of quarantine like Elizabeth. I had chickenpox, too, at four, and though I don't remember it, scarlatina at one year. I proudly wear my smallpox vaccination scar, and was grateful to Dr Salk for inventing a vaccine that could be taken on a sugar cube. I feel fortunate at my age to have a strong immune system, but I would never want to endanger those who do not by taking unnecessary chances as the anti-vaxxers do.
That was a close call, Silkendrum. I'm glad you made it through. So many didn't.

Chez moi and Elizabeth, since we seem to be pretty close in age, do you also remember the polio epidemic? Our mothers cut our fingernails so short they hurt, and we weren't allowed to go swimming anywhere, ever !, and kids would disappear from school and no one would tell you where they went? And every so often you'd visit a friend of your parents who was in an iron lung (I still remember the sound), and you'd see the occasional kid in leg braces, but your mother was afraid to let you talk to them? Remember?

@@Silkendrum Yes, I certainly do remember the scare of polio. It was so insidious and mysterious compared to measles and such. Never knew anyone in an iron lung, but did know a couple of people who wore a leg brace. And Mom and I were put into quarantine at my Gran's with the scarlatina - my father could only visit through the closed window.

By your comment I would almost think you see anyone below 25 as having the intellectual capacities of a toddler. Teens' brains are not fully developed, but they are advanced enough to make difficult choices.
Take the climate debate for example:
The children cry out 'Something needs to be done'.
The adults say 'Yeah, but it's gonna cost money so let's not do anything'
That's not the reaction of what you'd call a logical adult. That's the reaction of a child that thinks just because he closes his eyes, the world cannot see him as well.

People were dying because healthcare professionals - who should have known better - wouldn't treat them for fear of being infected themselves. People died and other people were ostracized for even being suspected. Children were beaten up in schools. Look up Ryan White. The mid 80"s were a very scary time. The government and healthcare organizations for the most part turned their back on these people until it finally started infecting white straight people. Only then did it start getting the attention it deserved. It is still looked on as a moral failure disease by many so-called educated people. My ex had 2 autistic children with his first wife.
They blamed the measles vaccine, claimed both boys were ‘normal’ before the vaccine was given (at around 18 mths)
But then we had a child and I was worried about genetic issues and the ‘risks’ that the vaccine would trigger autism.
My ex said that at about 6 mths that he could see our son engaged with him 100% differently than his first two.In comparison he could then see that his boys were showing some autististic signs at 6-8 mths, WAY before they had their vaccines (our boy would really focus on your face/eyes/mouth when held up.. and try to grab your nose etc. Smiled and laughed a lot too (like babies do) lots of eye contact)
Only in retrospect did my ex realise he and his ex wife had nothing to compare theirs to, so assumed their two babies were ‘normal’.
Autistic traits are not tested for until babies are 18 months - the same time the measles vaccinne is given!!
I am convinced this is what has started this scare.
    I was worried.
When I fell pregnant my doctor had told me that we would not know if my boy was autistic like his brothers until he waa 18 months when they did all the development tests.
I was wound up by all the anti vaccs hysteria, so made a deal with my doctor to have him vaccinated when he was 3 and we were free and clear of the autismn detection phase.
    He was fine. 👍👍👍👍
If you are worried, then feel free to delay having yours vaccinated til your are past the autism spotting timeline then get it done!!
Pregnant women and their babies are MASSIVELY at risk should they come into contact with your measly kid.

Hell, one of my close friend's mom started shooting her up with meth at age 12. She didn't like getting high alone and it made it a lot easier to convince her daughter that prostitution was a great idea. Apparently 13 year old girls bring in more $ than their 40 year old mothers.

It's the moderately wealthy to middle class who are into the 'new age' natural lifestyle that makes them question vaccines
The rural poor don't often read so much medical information, so they aren't as likely to question their doctors. They might not go to their doctors, but they don't usually question them.
An example of a 'just enough knowledge to be dangerous' 😑

@@TragoudistrosMPH Part of it is just a matter of how contagions spread. They need pathways for transmission, so large urban centers and ports of entry are always the first and hardest hit. More rural regions, by virtue of being less populated, have a smaller chance of someone contracting the disease in question whether they're actively prone to it or not, by simple virtue of the fact that the rarity of people and space between them means a higher chance of the contagion dying off before someone new acquires it.
