I had measles in 1952ish. I don't remember it because I was in the hospital for a week in a coma. I'm told I almost died. That's the hard way to get lifetime immunization. I don't recommend it.
I had measles around 1957 and still remember it. possible blindness so u were in a dark room 2 weeks. no tv no reading and you were so sick that it didn't matter. possible heart problems. i came thru it ok but no way would i risk my kids contracting it. I'm happy when science improves my life. let's enjoy it. talk to someone who went thru measles before you decide. I'm 100 percent sure no one would agree with scorning a vaccine
1949 here, when I was seven, and I was lucky, with just the boredom of quarantine like Elizabeth. I had chickenpox, too, at four, and though I don't remember it, scarlatina at one year. I proudly wear my smallpox vaccination scar, and was grateful to Dr Salk for inventing a vaccine that could be taken on a sugar cube. I feel fortunate at my age to have a strong immune system, but I would never want to endanger those who do not by taking unnecessary chances as the anti-vaxxers do.
That was a close call, Silkendrum. I'm glad you made it through. So many didn't.
Chez moi and Elizabeth, since we seem to be pretty close in age, do you also remember the polio epidemic? Our mothers cut our fingernails so short they hurt, and we weren't allowed to go swimming anywhere, ever !, and kids would disappear from school and no one would tell you where they went? And every so often you'd visit a friend of your parents who was in an iron lung (I still remember the sound), and you'd see the occasional kid in leg braces, but your mother was afraid to let you talk to them? Remember?
Oh, and I almost forgot - the pink department of health signs on the doors of houses where there were contagious diseases. You were MARKED to be avoided!
@@Silkendrum Yes, I certainly do remember the scare of polio. It was so insidious and mysterious compared to measles and such. Never knew anyone in an iron lung, but did know a couple of people who wore a leg brace. And Mom and I were put into quarantine at my Gran's with the scarlatina - my father could only visit through the closed window.

In 1959, my sister died after measles destroyed her kidneys at the age of five. I went to school with a couple of children who were unable to walk as a result of polio. My grandmother had small pox and was one of the few who survived the disease. I’m glad my children and their friends didn’t have to deal with horrible infectious diseases because of vaccines.
That's so sad and because these dumbass antivaxxers don't have family who lived through it like you did they'll believe autism is worse than risking an easily preventable death
@@PhoenixAngel429 Why won't the pharmaceutical companies agree to a comparison of the health of a group of vaccinated children as against a group of unvaccinated children (eg such as the Amish)?
@@proudhon100 - Is that true? I believe there have been a number of studies who did just that, compare vaccinated and unvaccinated children. Besides, what is your point? Even if some children respond badly to vaccinations, that overall health increase is undeniable.
@@maryhunter6389 That study has not been carried out, I can assure you. However, if you can provide evidence to the contrary then I will read it.
@@proudhon100 - There was a study, Danish I believe, that looked at whether or not vaccines can cause autism. They looked at vaccinated and unvaccinated children.
In my country (Netherlands) they did a double blind research into influenza vaccines with a placebo group.
There is research being done, but it can be hard to find a reliable controlgroup since most children will be vaccinated and there might be other influences at play.

The only way for the USA to go back to a real democracy is to get rid of the districts/gerrymandering and also get rid of the bipartisan system. A poly-party system with multiple parties for both conservatives and liberals is much better. The 2016 presidential election clearly proved that two parties is way too few to chose from

Things some people will never understand:
Feelings are not Facts.
And no it's not free speech if you are saying the facts are untrue.
It's a lie and a danger.
The technical term for these "some people" is US-Americans. The trash heap of humanity.
Lies are def still free speech
This is why I can say uncomfortable things on a college campus outside a safe space, but if I yell fire in a theater I'm still going to jail.
Amazes me that we have people who get free speech so completely backwards. Free speech exists to protect my freedom to speak, not your sensitivities on what you don't want to hear. Likewise, that free speech ends only where it causes harm to something more important than your feelings, like people's lives, which spreading misinformation about the health of kids actually does.
Really not a hard concept, yet we still have "safe spaces" and anti-vaxxers. Makes me wish measles killed instantly. At least then the poor kids wouldn't have to suffer for days, weeks, or months due to their parents stupidity.
Well, in US law, free speech is protected. You can say what you want. However, you cannot do what you want.
@@austinm5630 The USS Fort McHenry is sailing aimlessly around the Persian Gulf, and has been doing for weeks, because of an outbreak of mumps board. Yet the inconvenient truth is that very single person on board has had the MMR jab.

@@jahjoeka He means to say that adults are holy creatures that cannot make a mistake.
I differ. I think teenagers see the world with a clear view, see what wrong and what needs to be dealt with. By the time they reach the knowledge where they can right those wrongs they are adults who are so immersed in the system they no longer see the flaws.
@@GorinRedspear perfect sense from you. Kinda feels the same all the idealistic notions i had as a teen is now just about gone and i find myself clamoring to anything thats good but never perfect.
@Nick Trybull One thing is proven clearly: you don't understand what I said.
My point was that they offer a fresh view. The thing that is so very important in science, because more of the same doctrination cannot offer a new solution.
By your comment I would almost think you see anyone below 25 as having the intellectual capacities of a toddler. Teens' brains are not fully developed, but they are advanced enough to make difficult choices.
Take the climate debate for example:
The children cry out 'Something needs to be done'.
The adults say 'Yeah, but it's gonna cost money so let's not do anything'
That's not the reaction of what you'd call a logical adult. That's the reaction of a child that thinks just because he closes his eyes, the world cannot see him as well.

Yes people have the right to choose what drugs they take. But. Public rights can out weigh our privately held views. When the Aids epidemic rose. All steps were taken to stop its spread. And it didn't involve just being in a room w the person. Just take care of yourself and families. Until others are just as concerned as you are about staying alive.
A vaccine is not a drug anyhow. It is a one off training session for your immune system.
Gerald - when the AIDS epidemic started there was so much misinformation. People were dying because healthcare professionals - who should have known better - wouldn't treat them for fear of being infected themselves. People died and other people were ostracized for even being suspected. Children were beaten up in schools. Look up Ryan White. The mid 80"s were a very scary time. The government and healthcare organizations for the most part turned their back on these people until it finally started infecting white straight people. Only then did it start getting the attention it deserved. It is still looked on as a moral failure disease by many so-called educated people. Never underestimate the ability of smart people to be discriminatory and cruel.

My ex had 2 autistic children with his first wife.
They blamed the measles vaccine, claimed both boys were ‘normal’ before the vaccine was given (at around 18 mths)
But then we had a child and I was worried about genetic issues and the ‘risks’ that the vaccine would trigger autism.
My ex said that at about 6 mths that he could see our son engaged with him 100% differently than his first two.In comparison he could then see that his boys were showing some autististic signs at 6-8 mths, WAY before they had their vaccines (our boy would really focus on your face/eyes/mouth when held up.. and try to grab your nose etc. Smiled and laughed a lot too (like babies do) lots of eye contact)
Only in retrospect did my ex realise he and his ex wife had nothing to compare theirs to, so assumed their two babies were ‘normal’.
Autistic traits are not tested for until babies are 18 months - the same time the measles vaccinne is given!!
I am convinced this is what has started this scare.
I was worried.
When I fell pregnant my doctor had told me that we would not know if my boy was autistic like his brothers until he waa 18 months when they did all the development tests.
I was wound up by all the anti vaccs hysteria, so made a deal with my doctor to have him vaccinated when he was 3 and we were free and clear of the autismn detection phase.
He was fine. 👍👍👍👍
If you are worried, then feel free to delay having yours vaccinated til your are past the autism spotting timeline then get it done!!
Pregnant women and their babies are MASSIVELY at risk should they come into contact with your measly kid.
Good recount of your experience and one I've heard from other parents. They simply waited a year (or 2) longer before vaccinations were given. Although this is still risky for the kid, its a far better strategy than NEVER immunizing your child.
Am I missing something? Your son was different at 6months than his two brothers. But his two brothers had been fully vaccinated at that time. So actually you yourself are comparing your then unvaxxed child to his differently behaving brothers.
He was fine after you vaxxed him when he was three. But comparing his behavior at six months would be more an antivaxx argument since the unvaxxed kid was the healthiest?!
Do NOT delay vaxines. 3 years is plenty of time for death.
DO NOT delay vaccines... To all future mothers out there. Take your fears and go study a book about microbiology. LEARN about the fucking subject. You will learn that every available body a disease has, is a new opportunity to get stronger and mutate. VACCINATE YOUR GADDAMN KIDS
It's herion mom I swear,,,, lol

Then I must pause again at 1:15 hahahaha...yup I will have to go watch one of Lewis specials today
The sad part of anti-vaccination parents is that most of them have probably been vaccinated, so they put their kids at a risk they themselves don't have.
No, they don't. They got vaccinated and yet had polio, flu, chickenpox. Vaccines don't save you from catching these diseases. I said that because many african died because if the whole ANERICAN VACCINES
@@liawhitney2202 Immunocompromised persons can still catch a disease even with a vaccination, that is not a reason to not vaccinate a child (it is however a reason to have a child maintain a healthy diet.)
AMERICAN VACCINES ARE NOT A THING. Vaccinations are standardized across the globe for the World Health Organization. Even more, a cursory reading on reports of vaccinations in Africa shows a declining infection rate after the introduction of vaccines.
I wonder if watching your child DIE of a completely preventable disease would change ANYONE'S mind??
I'm not sure it would work on these people some are losing a second child to their own stupidity.
It absolutely would. Unfortunately, most think it would never happen to them... until it does.
And watching a child have grand maul sezurie after having a vaccine would make any pro vaxxer think twice. If you talk to the educated anti vaxxers they can tell you the moment their mind changed. And it had to do with watching their child experience an adverse reaction. Most anti vaxxer' s were pro vax at one point.
@@crystallevin1631 HAhahahahahaha, "educated anti-vaxxer" hahahahahaha.
I find your maturity lacking. I guess holding your son in your arms while he's convulsing is funny to you? Also what's your degree in? Bc mine is in child development. I pray you never have a child have a sever adverse reaction to medication. And I pray you are never forced to make a decision that could either kill your child or have you accused of child abuse. So yes I'm educated and pro choice in all medical decisions. VARES exists bc children are hurt by vaccines regularly.
Black should have his own show.
A fantastic message!
If those parents DON'T want to vaccinate their kids they should not be using medicine or go to the hospital for help when their kids get sick from measles. 🙄
Agreed !.
I know! That sh** is hella scummy. First you didn't believe the doctors now all of a sudden you want the doctors to save your baby. Nah you take that bastard to the hippie doctor you got that BS from and treat the measles with some sage and tea.
It's not the kid's fault. The kid still deserves to be treated for their illnesses, even if their parents are idiots.
I’ve always had trouble agreeing with “no children should be separated from their parents” because anti vaxxers should definitely have their kids taken away
You should have trouble agreeing no children should be separated from their parents! Tons of people have kids they neglect or abuse. Hell, one of my close friend's mom started shooting her up with meth at age 12. She didn't like getting high alone and it made it a lot easier to convince her daughter that prostitution was a great idea. Apparently 13 year old girls bring in more $ than their 40 year old mothers.
Not that it makes not vaccinating your kids any less moronic, but child protection agencies are overworked for far darker reasons than anti-vaxxers.
LOL anyone else have to pause the video at 23 seconds in because you could no longer contain your laughter or is it just me?
i really like Lewis Black and can not wait till he tours my town again..
Leave it to Lewis Black to make this tragedy so funny. I also like the flat earth reference, he did a commentary on that also. I'm still laughing!
Funny thing about common sense, it's uncommon!
I don't think measles should be making a comeback so easily where are the vaccinations people
Since it is so contagious and can survive for quite some time without a host, it can pretty much wait for an unvaccinated or immunosuppressed person to walk by.
It's the unvaccinated who are getting the disease.
look up Titers, as they show your level of immunity to a disease. Some vaccinated people might be 95% or 98% immune, and a weak immune system could drop lower (depends on the disease) so it's possible to catch a disease.
The biggest danger is that viruses mutate. It's possible that a new strain could mutate and bypass our existing immune systems.
(Did you know there are 3 types of HIV viruses? 1,2, and O )
"Science is no match for it's greatest foe, idiots". A truly classic line, that I'm stealing. Or, "My parents are kind of stupid, God knows how I'm still alive", another classic line certain to be in my top 10 for the year.
"Social Media Helps Measles Make a Comeback"
One of the most depressing lines I've read in a while.

NATIVE LATINOS Fuck TRUMP this dude is hilarious.

did u notice the states affected by this
Near Portland Oregon is one area where measles is rampant now.
It's the moderately wealthy to middle class who are into the 'new age' natural lifestyle that makes them question vaccines
The rural poor don't often read so much medical information, so they aren't as likely to question their doctors. They might not go to their doctors, but they don't usually question them.
An example of a 'just enough knowledge to be dangerous' 😑
@@TragoudistrosMPH Part of it is just a matter of how contagions spread. They need pathways for transmission, so large urban centers and ports of entry are always the first and hardest hit. More rural regions, by virtue of being less populated, have a smaller chance of someone contracting the disease in question whether they're actively prone to it or not, by simple virtue of the fact that the rarity of people and space between them means a higher chance of the contagion dying off before someone new acquires it.
@@wardenm good points :) I was focusing on the psychological and social, not the geographic and urban components.
Natural Selection at it's best
Actually and sadly, no. Because it's not the idiots that suffer or die, it's their kids.
The problem is that they put people who can't get vaccines for medical reasons and people with weakened immune systems in danger too.
Mom: Is that a vaccine?
Kid: No it's heroin, I swear.
😂😂😂😂😂
I"m so glad a friend of mine finally came around and started vaccinating his kids. It only took him _~checks watch~_ over five years.
