    I know this is a bit late, having been from years ago. I agree with steps 1, 2, 4, and 5. Step 3 (move your hand back) depends on your strength. If you put a lot of power into your throw like I do then that would throw you off. For those throwing in an arc, thats not a bad tip. Having taught this for the @hawaiispartanohana race team for a couple years, one of the biggest issues is something you addressed but I saw it on your throw. Not throwing the spear like every throwing thing we do in sports comes down to your follow through. The tip of the spear follows your hand after release, so thats why your spear (and believe me many, many others) turns to the left in the video instead of sticking straight in the target. Your throwing hand went to the left just like when you throw a baseball, football etc. If you want it to go straight you have to keep your follow through straight. There are three methods of doing this and they depend on the comfort and what works for the thrower. First is what i would tell my athletes was to give shaq a hi-five. The follow through on this is high, and usually used by those throwing with an arc. After release you keep your hand high and straight at the target like you were trying to get a tall person to give you a high five. The second method is the one I do for those who throw a straight spear and that is where your hand is pointed right at the target like you are offering it a handshake across a boardroom table. After release your arm stays straight and your hand points right at the target as if offering to shake its hand. The last is the pocket slap. This is for those who throw quickly in a snapping motion, like a baseball pitcher. To keep the tip straight at the target instead of bringing your arm across your body, you bring it straight down and slap what would be the front pocket if you were wearing jeans. Anyways I hope this helps because reading the comments I saw quite a few people having issues with the spear turning and this is the solution to it, just have to figure out if you are an arc thrower, straight thrower, or snap thrower, then use the method that corresponds. And if you are a snap thrower… give yourself enough room for the hand to come down so you don’t nt smash the metal barricade.

    That's sooo coool that you made your own Spartan spear!!
    OMG! I held my spear at the balance point, threw it and it did exactly what you said ... and fell out - my first 30 burpees. I never knew about the "one hand back" method. THANKS!! :)

    @sierrakohl9080 Před 4 měsíci

    TLDR;tips
    Make sure tip is straight if not make it straight
    Throw rope over fence
    Find balance point - try w each spear - put 1 hand with back from balance pt
    Keep wrist locked
    Think of it as a dart- throw straight

    Thanks for encouraging me and making me feel like crap at the same time. lol. I bought a Spartan Spear a few weeks ago. I went out to my local Archery Range this past weekend to practice my Spear Throw. Know this - I have never nailed the Spear Throw. I have watched dozens of vides over and over again before I headed out. I distanced myself 30 feet from the target and spent the next two hours consistently throwing and tossing.
    I have rarely felt as frustrated as I did that morning. I must have thrown/tossed the Spear over 100 times - I hit only twice. First - Every time I threw the spear it drifted to the left (I throw right-handed). I spent about an hour trying to correct that - I even tried facing 45+ degrees to the right before I throw. But I didn't want to learn bad habits. Finally I discovered that my wrist was twisting as I threw. I corrected that and the spear started heading towards the target. Second - the spear kept falling short of the target. No, I wasn't stepping on the rope. My brother was there with me to video me and he suggested that I toss the spear up, allowing the trajectory to bring it back down into the target. Still, no hits! After that session, I resigned myself to throw once and (if I miss) quickly do my 15 burpees.
    So you see, when you "one of the easiest", I shudder. If I were to pick three of the easiest obstacles (real obstacles that require strength and/or skill) in a Spartan race they would be - #1: Z Wall (even on wet and muddy day), #2: Multi-Rig (rings), #3: Plate Drag

    Great Tutorial! Thx. I have been practicing at home for hours on the same kind of target that Robert Killian uses (small square target from Dick's Sporting goods). I can hit it right on 55-60% of the time (remember, it's about 60% smaller than a Spartan target). In the past I had to battle with my throws drifting left. So I taught myself to toss more to the right. It helped. THEn I discovered a new grip that works so much better for me. It's a three finger grip, just like if I was holding a dart. No longer do my tosses drift left. It improved my hit ratio to 7 out of 10. Right On!! BUT ... the past two races my tosses have drifted to the right! WHAT!!! I discovered two things 1) My body was still tossing to correct my "drift left" issue and 2) the Spartan Spear is a bit lighter than mine. At the Philly race it went about a foot to the right. At the PNC race it went about 1 inch to the right. So now I got this!! I just need to adjust my body to stand slightly to the left OR I go to the store and get a Spear that weighs less.
    I was so upset when I missed at PNC - so many hours I put into Spear Throw practice. There Is No Way I'm missing at Fenway or Oracle Park!!

      All good man, it happens. I missed two Spears this year despite never missing in practice. Race situation is a very different feel. I highly recommend practicing with a high heart rate to simulate race situations. As far as the spear weighing less, that's definitely true. They make their Spears with a light hollow alluminum which is hard to duplicate unless you buy an expensive one vs the DIY version from home Depot for $20

    I learned how to throw on my own if I can suggest a tip for new throwers use your thumb to stabilize the spear it should be flat to the spear it should replace your wrist to stabilize the spear while in air. This will prevent the left right and up and down like he does in his video. Though a good video he is throwing at 10 yards. Easy to do with one finger 20 yards that thumb will make a huge difference. It should simulate a karate chop.

This year I'm focusing on short course races so speed is my top priority. I do speed work twice a week, lift 4 times a week, and do circuit work 2-3 times a week. Wall climbing there are three techniques that i see used. The muscle up if you are strong enough. The scooby doo if you can barely reach the top (once you grab the top you scramble your legs up until your heel is hooked, then pull up, shift your weight, and drop down the other side. The other really effective method is the “female method” on youtube, where you walk your legs up after you grip the top using gravity to help. It is slower but very effective. The ring swing is just practice, the technique comes with practice
