I did a lot of sports, basketball included, but my main thing was distance running (5k, 10K, half marathons mostly). Not because I was slower, but I just didn't enjoy it. My legs had always moved my body easily. Not fast in my older age, but still easy. Not any more. I crossed the line and never did another one. There I was, nearly 30 years after my first race, taking my shoes off for the last time and I knew in that moment I would never do it again. And with that came a big loss to my identity. Countless miles of training and competition on three continents, hundreds of races, who knows how many pairs of shoes. I was always "the runner" in my group.
