- The Nobel Prize is one of the most prestigious awards a person can earn. Among its many recipients, it is an honor won by chemists, physicists, and authors who have contributed vast amounts of tireless work to shaping the world we live in, and for their efforts in paving the way for humanity to move forward. The prize is named after its benefactor, Alfred Nobel, who, among a great many other things, was noted for his revolutionary invention that oftentimes literally helps to shape our world: dynamite.
Although it would eventually be used as a weapon, dynamite was commonly used to blast rock underwater or to carve away tunnels. That is, at least, until November 12, 1970, when local authorities in Florence, OR, realized Mr. Nobel's invention could be put to another use: blowing up the rotting carcass of a beached whale.

"The blast blasted blubber beyond all believable bounds."
This is the first news report I found having fun with alliteration.
Ironically. A Mr. Bacon witnessed the whale meat story.
That line is spongebob worthy
The newspapers can’t have all the fun.
Nothing like some good old alliteration. " a little old lady got mutilated late last night " Warwick Zevon
Clever. Very clever. I enjoyed it.
I can't even imagine the smell and then having it rain down everywhere.
I imagine it's no different from what Oregon smells like now
Call down the Eskimos! The blubber is bite-sized!!!
😆😆😆 I swear I would have been so mad like y tho
Prolly pretty fishy

My family moved to Salem, OR, in 1975. The exploding whale story was legendary by then.
Paul Linnman remained on Portland area television for many years afterward. He would regularly be asked about it.
I was delighted when a clip of the whale went viral.
My neighbor was the man you can see wearing the black fedora in the background at 1:47. He was the head of Lane County Department of Environmental Quality. This was a huge embarrassment for his department, as Lane County prided themselves on being the cutting edge of eco back in the day.
Did he tell you his story of the whale tale ?
@@JoJoJoker no, but his kids did 😂
I’m in Lane Co. Eugene Oregon. I’ve heard of this story here. And over on the coast it seems to attract visitors today. 💥🐋 Crazy, your neighbor is in the news clip? Omgosh 🤭 😂 I’m going to Google it and read about it more. LOL..XD What could possibly go wrong with blowing up a whale carcass? 🧐 🙈 Haha…
I live in Oregon but had never heard about this until I was in 10th grade biology, the teacher pulled up the video and my entire class had an existential crisis over the fact they legit thought loading a whales carcass with tnt was the answer. Like dynamite is some miracle cure you can use to just explode all your problems away.
An existential crisis? Really?
Maybe he went to a really pretentious school.
@@SkylerKing Maybe for the whale.
Eh, my dad's an explosives expert and on his first day of training the teacher told the class, "there are very few problems that can't be solved by the proper application of high explosives". Arguably, this was merely an improper application :D
Ahhh yes, the 70’s: an era of peace, love, and *blowing up whales*
inflation, Vietnam war, Watergate, stagflation, job losses, acid rain, crime, disco....
I miss the 70's

You act like today is better, first of all. Second of all, shit was still way better back then! Third of all, lol “acid rain.” I bet you believe that man causes climate change too. 😂
"Blasting it to Kingdom come."
"Let us know what other explosive stories you would like to hear about."
Hilarious! This is why I love this channel.
I laughed at that part too 😂 the narrator’s voice just makes it even funnier! I wonder who he is??
Blasting it to smithereens! 😂 his small jokes are great!
@@Blak2blue ikr? I wish I knew his name! He’s hilarious! I bet he’s narrated lots of other works, too, but sadly I have no idea 🤷♀️ lol oh well!
"It might burst, and that'll be a bigger mess... so.. we're all agreed, right? Dynamite it is!"
Best News Commentary ever. Been watching the news clip and sharing for years. It's nice to have some history on this Whale of a story..... Nice Job
Concur
It’s funny how it became an urban legend in the rest of the country, because in Oregon, they mentioned it every year. Like clockwork, on the anniversary of the incident, KATU would roll out the footage and re-air it.
'If you could drive on the beach it was considered a highway' love the optimism
Reportedly, bystanders were told "everything whale be okay". 🤷♀️
This version of Free Willy is way more action packed.
I would ssy this constitutes animal cruelty but the animal is already dead so its fine.
Well played. 🍻 🥂 🍻
This joke isn’t funny
@@booba2141 this joke only half involves animal cruelty, do you prefer to hyperventilate and cry at horror movies, or laugh at the gory facts of reality? We all suffer to the last breath, might as well use it to laugh... or whine. Which will you choose, on all the moments you seem to have now. Or your final few? Laugh, or whine?
@@howHumam this is a stupid post
In 1970 I was a student at the U of O in Eugene, Oregon; just in land from Florance. I and my wife-to-be went to see the whale but luckly arrived a few minutes too late. As we pulled into the parking lot we saw & smelled the damage and kepted on moving to a part of the coast up wind and far way from the site.
You guys dodged -a bul- an exploding whale!
P.S. Is “Smallwood” really your last name?? 😬 You really lucked out that your girlfriend during college chose to marry you! Lol.
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 I have heard that bad joke since junior high. 60 years & 4 sons ago.
@@old-moose
I’m so glad that I could brighten up your day with some nostalgia then!
P.S. The irony of you only having sons is too funny for words - you produced 4 more smallwoods lmfao. Poor boys.
This story is still legendary in Oregon, it happened 20 years before I was born and I’ve heard about it my entire life
What would I wear to a whale funeral? A raincoat!
Ahhaha! 😂😂
When I first started work for an aerospace company in the early 80’s they used to show us this film of the whale being blown up every year at our safety meeting (we worked with explosives). Nice to finally know the full story.
I remember when that happened! I lived about 50 miles away.
I lived in Portland at the time and the whole thing was a huge story in Oregon (not just Florence). Leading up to it there were news stories about trying to decide how to get rid of the whale and so when they decided they were going to blow it up, we were all excited to watch the news. The resulting video was so funny!
I read Dave Barry RELIGIOUSLY as a kid, and I remember when I found a RealPlayer copy of the news cast. Glad it's being shared with a new generation.
I haven’t seen a Real Player file for over 20 years
Dave's World was a great and underrated sitcom! My father is a huge Dave Barry fan and Night Court was one of my family's favorite shows, so when a Dave Barry show starring Harry Anderson was announced, it was a pretty big deal. It's a shame that it didn't really get picked up in syndication because it definitely would have gotten more of a following.
I can’t believe that I missed this back in 2003 when the video was making its rounds!
My coworkers and I at the time were on top of anything funny that was online back then, as I worked as a web designer with them. But the timing must’ve just been terrible when this video was making its rounds, as I went on a much needed vacation to Europe in February and was laid off in March 2003... then I was really busy for many months working on building my website portfolio at home alone, without coworkers to get funny internet things from.
I’m so glad that I found the news video about this story before I died! Lol.
This is one of my favorite stories... this sums up the United States in its glory!!
Thumbs up from the Dooleys of Michigan Enjoyed The Video
Love your Videos!!!
Can you do a Weird Barber History next? 🦁👍
I would watch that 🔥
As a native Oregonian, I was 13 yrs old when this happened, remember seeing it on the news, now 65 yrs old, still remember it.
YES!!! A new video as I’m driving for work
Never let this video die!
It's way too funny!
One of the most ridiculous true stories ever 😅
I have no words for this. Like really! I have no words to describe but calling it as weird, stinky and awesome at the same time!
Always loved this story lol
This story is a buffet of puns.
I wonder if they put the dynamite in the blow hole?
we have to give them this : they actually filmed it
also : "History shows again and again how nature point out the folly of men"

Oh no there goes Tokyo!!
Well, that is quite a whale of a tale.
Absolutely MARVELLOUS! Thank u!
I was originally just going to scroll past this, but my curiosity changed my mind. This should be fun.
It's hard to imagine in 2021, but there was a time when the sole purpose of the entire internet for me was to watch this video.
The title should be changed to "The maximum amount of puns that can be stuffed into a beached whale".
My grandma had this less than 10 minute news report on a burnt DVD, I remember it being brought to peoples houses and lent out when I was a kid.
We were living on the coast of Northern California at the time, and this was no secret. It dominated the local news for several days, and the story of the actual explosion was both terrifying and hilarious. For months afterward, my siblings and I kept hoping to see a stranded whale on our beaches too.
lol what were they thinking was gonna happen, LOL!!
This is my absolute favorite CZcams video. I have probably watched it a thousand times and I'm so happy theres a weird history video on it lol
I remember hearing about this. Can't wait to see the story behind it
They should do an annual reenactment of this event with a fake whale of coarse but the same explosion.
Uh no? That sounds like something a dickhead would do...
"Yeah! Let's relive the moment a whale exploded!" This shit shouldn't happen every year for fun...
@@cruxmind Lol wow don't get your panties on a wad. Take a chill pill, it was just a joke.

I'm from Vancouver, WA and my family and I have been to the Oregon Coast frequently, so I love hearing stories about the coast. This story is really funny after the fact.
This was one of the first viral videos in the late 90s. It was shared in dorm rooms all over the US. Keep it in that sense of history as well.

I have always been astounded that those handling the disposal actually thought this would have a different outcome. But then again, when explosives are an option I suppose some people just can't help themselves.

This is the modern way.
Look ma, no wale,
Look son, 2 tons of decomposing whale blubber on your father's car!
In 2005, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, Gulfport Ms was left with a casino barge in the middle of one of the largest roads in the area. Frustrated by the endless days of debris removal and the drone of helicopters the mayor of Gulfport, Brett Warr(good man) decided the barge had to go. He and some city engineers thought perhaps they could blast the barge to help speed up the process and maybe have a little fun. The mayor lioked like a five year old on Christmas morning as push the plunger initiating the charge from a "safe" half mile away. Unfortunately the steel hull of the barge essentially created a shaped charge launching flaming debris up to that half mile he was located. Good news, there were no structures left to damage but a good "oh crap" moment was had by all.
I LOVE THIS
Do you hire a dedicated pun maker for these videos?
And to think, all this time I've been saying 'Oregon Trail'.
I only have one thing to say
God bless America
I lived in Waldport a very small town in oregon on the coast, most of my youth from 1997 (when i was born) to 2013 and there was many times a whale beached itself or a part of a boat was on a beach.
I only moved here to Oregon in 1982, but still, every time I see this footage I shake my head, and ask; "are we ever going to live this down?"
and of course it showed up in the Simpson's, Matt is from Portland.
Whale, whale, whale ... Looking for to this one!
I would say this constitutes animal cruelty but the animal is already dead so its fine.
Modern problems require modern solutions after all.
This is well known to anyone who grew up in Oregon in even the surrounding decades. The news celebrated every anniversary they could. Everyone thought it was hilarious, aside from the folks who caused it and the poor guy with the flattened car. Lol
One of my favorite stories.
Edit:
I use to read Dave Barry like crazy. The exploding animal institute...🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
So what you’re saying is, they used a bunch of hematic grenades to blow up a Beached Thing?

I gave a like just for the title alone.
"What would you wear to a whale funeral?"
Hazmat gear.
the appropriate dress code for attending an exploding whale funeral service is the same dress code for the front ten rows at a Gallagher concert.
Stories like this always have one person telling another person something is a bad idea or that they're doing something wrong, and the other person flat out ignoring them and saying "I know what I'm doing" or something like that.
This just goes to show history has a way of repeating itself in various ways.
Even in the form of an exploding whale carcass. 😂
As an Oregonian. I don't know whether to be proud or disappointed.
I’d go with disappointed.
That Seinfeld episode was the greatest one they ever did IMO
Was it a Titleist

Awesome! Now, do a story on the New Carissa, which is just as hilarious as this! Instead of dynamite, they used napalm........with disastrous results! We had gift shops selling Tshirts with a map of the Oregon coast & a slogan of......."The New Carissa, coming to a beach near you"! 🤣😂
