The most beautiful train ride in India - Kalka Shimla toy train

- After visiting the Taj Mahal in Agra we decided to head to Shimla to escape the summer heat. It is the most popular hill destination in India and every year thousands of tourists from the plains travel to the foothills of Himalayas to this pristine town. We decided to take the UNESCO heritage toy train from Kalka to Shimla which takes about 6 hours. The train journey is spectacular and the best way to reach Shimla in my opinion. But once we reached there, we were greeted with maddening crowds and traffic. So we dropped our initial plan of staying in the city centre and travelled to a nearby village. Mashobra was a much better option for an extended stay and we had the best homely meals at our homestay. My mother and Annika loved spending time in the hills and we ended up having a lovely family vacation :)

My heart missed several beats seeing Annika so close to the open window on the train ride. Of course she is safe in her mom’s arm. Putting that aside it was a joy hearing Annika say ‘munki’ and her doing a dance. Beautiful family. Hello mom!
The train ride and the views are magnificent, feels like you are being transported back in time. Wow your homestay was so tranquil, what a great find!! Annika playing peek a boo with the Chef at the kitchen pass was so sweet. Thanks for sharing 💞
There's definitely something very nostalgic about Indian train rides (especially this one), even though I have no history with them. :D Vinod tells me wonderful stories about riding trains in his childhood :') I think Annika will remember Indian trains fondly too!
The train ride in India is absolutely amazing! Thank you for sharing it with us 🥰🥰
I like the simplicity in you, Johanna. You always seem to be light and easy - you're creating a wonderful atmosphere for Annika's well being and development in every sense. Keep it up! She does the twists and dances whenever and wherever she feels good 😂😂😂😂. Hope your mum enjoys all the trips. A very simple and humble person too.👌👍
Oh thanks you so much! You’re too kind, but it means a lot 🙏 i can assure you that i’m not even nearly always light and easy, today has been an especially challenging day for example with all my work deadlines pressing on and struggling with Annika’s bad day on top of that! I have been cranky all day. But we are doing our best to give Annika a loving and happy home environment just like you said and of course I do try to enjoy most days. Just wanted to share today’s reality considering that the biggest struggles rarely get filmed 😊
It is the most beautiful very close to my because I grew up in for almost 12 years of my I remember mall road lower Bazaar mashobara and Chadwick falls I went to school there and lady Irwin and Portmore used to live in Summerhill and my dad used to work at command office the head office and we used to take train every day I remember kalka mail very well the most beautiful train ride we used to come to Delhi every year for 12 years to visit our and and used to travel by kalka mail I am talking about 1956 - 1968 and Shimla was very clean and very less congested I went back there 10 years ago it's really bad now but I still love it I live in Canada past 50 years but Shimla is still my favorite place very close to my you must have really I watch the video very carefully to the end because I relate to everything where you are going may God bless you and your whole family always
It is always worth it to visit outskirts rather than the main tourist spot specially in mountain region.....n home stay is the best option...... happy to watch you relaxing and enjoying your trip... Annika is always find her own way to enjoying the vacation...... stay blessed all of you ❤️.....
Kids are the most beautiful gift by God ❤
11:20 stole my heart ❤
so very true.also @13:44
@@drdr73 sorry to say every moment of anika stole our heart ❤ 😅
Great to Stay away from the vast humbug of Shimla town. Watch out for those window with Annika. It's dangerous, she is peeping out. You must be exhausted from the journey, but take care. Photos and videos are secondary, safety first.
So good to see Annika playing & exploring now that she has much more mobility. I can't help but think about your sister & Mom's partner back home in Finland as they surely must be following her experiences in India with great enjoyment. It's so wonderful that you & Vinod are able to show your Mom such a fascinating part of the world Johanna & instill indelible memories. Sending much love as always. ❤.
We’re hoping that my sister gets to visit us here next year 🥰 she misses Annika the most! But for her we will plan a very different visit when the time comes! My mom is a surprisingly adventurous traveller 🥲❤️
Thank you for visiting my hometown shimla. Little daughter is so cute
Anika growing soo big in blink of an eyes😍😍😍
Darling baby doll Annika is just too adorable 😘😘🥰❤❤ Your videos or rather 'vlogs' are very beautifully done Johanna.... From the photography, to the music, to the editing and of course the Wonderful content 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼😃 Great job Johanna👍🏼👍🏼☺ Very classy. And I just Love all the effort you put into telling us the history and whatever information you can about everything 👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼, too good! I really LOVE❤❤❤ your channel Johanna, and both your families 😍🥰🙏🏼🙏🏼🌷🌻🌹God Bless You all especially baby darling Annika😘😘😘 You should ask Nina to come to India on a holiday!
Nice video. But Johanna, please be careful that Annika does not peep out of an open window in a moving train or any other vehicle.
Yes, you are right
Yes , after all she is a child.
I suspect Annika never hears the word “no”.
Free ka gyaan hai pelte jao
You r right...
I feel like when I hug and kiss anika my all worries and sorrows wil go away, she is really an angel bby fallen from sky.
Mam i am so thankful to you visiting beautiful places less traveled by foreigner
Just wow! That cottage and surroundings are an absolute must visit area. I could sense how content and relaxed you actually were. I wish Nina was along with you guys. It's mesmerising to watch how the landscape changes according to the geographic areas.
That train ride spectacular, you captured a beautiful shot a sideview of yourself and the sun glistening on your face, so pretty Shimla what a beautiful place I can also feel the peace and the views 😍...and course love Annika saying her own name😊
Ohh how nice to see your Mom ❤️ enjoy the journey, she's so cool 🌹and Annika ,loveable cute baby 🌹
Like the way u travel.. No strict schedules.. Relaxed and peaceful.. Enjoying every place.. Slowly.. When i usually go on family trips they have this strict itinerary.. We are always trying to finish seeing a place reaching the next.. It just kills the purpose..
A strict itinerary might be ok if we were at any point travelling with a tour operator or such who has arranged everything for us. But otherwise the slow travel is much more enjoyable and a good balance to the hectic work/parenting life :)
It's the same with every indian family trip 😊
watching old videos to start my day
Little Arnika and her obsession with cute dogs 🐶🌸🌸😂
I love cute little Annika ❤
It's so cute that Annika sucks on the train. How cute you were mother-daughter. Annika is a total mascot. How nice, How well she said her name, Annika! How lovely she said “Monkey,”. She is very sweet. What a beautiful place where you are, lush green. You welcome your mother well. You are giving your mother unforgettable memories. You are a good daughter. She must also be a good mother because she has raised a nice person like you. Please convey my regards to her and say my congratulations on this. Our elders are very valuable to us.
She is a mother who did her best, which is what I want to be too 🥰 AND she loves reading comments in my videos so she will most likely read your kind words too! 🙏
Annika steals the show, each time- every time .. she called out her name ‘Annika’ twice .. Did you observe??
Yes we observe every word she says and she has known how to say her name even long before this video 🥰 she just often doesnt talk quite as much to the camera as she talks to us though 😄
Such a wonderful travel video!! Thank you!! Nothing better than enjoying the peace and beauty of the mountains and nature.
Parle-G & tiger biscuits. No idea what magic they have in it but they are every kid's favourite.
ANIKA IS SOO CUTE...LOVE TO SEE HER IN YOUR VIDEOS.
I rode it in 2005 on my school trip....I was the youngest kid on that trip maybe because of that I didn't understand its importance....but this video made me fell in love with the view 🥰.... Thanks Johanna
Love to see Annika getting opportunities to experience different places .hope she will get some play time with children of her age too
She does play with other kids at home 😊 what little she knows how to play at this age 😄
am sure that this train ride will be a core memory for that kid, long when he is grown up he might think about this travel his mother❤❤
I also think the same as you , some memories get engraved in our consciousness so deep , from our childhood , that it feels like Deja vu ! ❤️❤️🌸
I had the ocassion to travel in this kalka Simla train during 1989 while I was working in New Delhi.Every Indian should travel in this train to see and enjoy the nature of India atleast once.It is like Switzerland.Quiet marvellous.Top of the hill train is moving.Train with open window .No word to express the beauty of Simla Queen.Foreiners are more and enjoying the trip.
Johanna, just found your channel today. An absolute pleasure to find someone who both has such a pleasant outlook and is so intelligent. Hope life in India always keeps blessing you with every joy.
Welcome to Shimla, Himachal pradesh! Enjoy ur stay.
I rode on that train 12 years back, when I was a small kid. Feels nostalgic.

Nice photo of Annika n yourself looking out of the train ☺️
Reminds me of the travelogue Anthony Bourdain did in the same train ride..it was so picturesque too👍🏻. Tq for the glimpses of the Himalayas. I miss that the most frm my travels to India...the serenity n peace filled mountains n sylvan environs. I m sure going to watch this vid several times 👌🏼
Nice to see kalka, mashobra❤️💜💚💙i belong to Chandigarh staying in Chennai.... remembering all the good memories of Himachal and Chandigarh
You have done great choosing mashobra...it's really very nice
So beautiful view of Shimla, nice train journey, it's a beautiful video with your Mom and again very sweet sweet Annika❤️❤️, always love to see her in your excellent captures
Annika is so cute and adorable.
What a lovely place and a lovely video
Parle G is yum no doubt. JoVi’s baby is so cute that I want her to be my brother’s son’s girlfriend. He is 2 and absolutely cute and Annika and him would look adorable cute together. But we live so far away from you. I hope someday these two meet in future ❤️🥰
*Annika seating beside open window & feeling restless , quite anxious moments for all of us : take care, as usual it was a Nice Vlog !*
You missed Akshardham in Delhi. Some say, its better than Tajmahal. Maybe you can see on the way back. You can see royal visits on CZcams.
What a beautiful place!! Shimla and Darjeeling are in my 'to visit' list for a long time - thanks to Ruskin Bond's books, I have fantasized quite a bit. I hope you mom liked the place, despite slight inconvenience. Lovely vlog as usual.🙂
Vinod and I have also been to Darjeeling a few years ago! It's a lovely town, and would be my favourite over Shimla :)
Take care of annika the train window is open that s what i am saying she jumps out of the window, vinod ji app ki sasuma absorving every thing it's lovely 🌹.
You should try this Ride at the time of Snowfall
That’s a great journey and a special place, thanks for sharing your experience, have a blessed trip,
your daughter is very cute 🥰..
Once I read an article by Santosh Desai in Times of India which was titled Television from an Idiot Box to a Smart Gadget.
He was talking about how during the covid pandemic he started watching OTT channels on Smart TV and he recommended two categories of films
1) Malayalam New Generation Cinema
2) Nordic Noir Thrillers
I saw two from Finland, Deadwind and Bordertown.
The Nordic Noir thrillers have gloomy cinematography as they are shot in suburbs of cities with blizzard all around.
The protagonist is some 55 year old half Bald police inspector.
Most of the actresses are aunties with minimal makeup. During the first 3 episodes the plot is slow however it builds up from episode 4.
Then when you reach episode 5 you want to binge watch till episode 10.
By the time you finish episode 10 you are raving about the series.
Lovely video. I love Annika's " hellos" and "monkey" words. She is really sweet. Thanks for showing the train ride.
Wow beautiful to see Annika again. Love cute Annika too much indeed.
Nice ti see ur travel vlog as a family.
Wowwwwwww!!! That was a visual treat! I feel like I just went to the mountains with you😊 definitely a good idea to leave Shimla and head to the quieter more remote outskirts. A few years ago, after a nightmare of what I thought would be vacation far from the madding crowds we realized we had landed up in even more chaos and noise in Shimla and decided never again!!! Maybe it's quieter off season. Anika peering into the kitchen chatting with the cook was just adorable💕
I'd love to explore the temples and historical, colonial buildings in shimla, but I'm terrified it'd be a chaos even in the winter season :D
@@JohannaNorth unfortunately, it is. We were there in December for new years eve😁. I feel March would be a good time as most kids have exams then.
Relaxing video. Great views . Hope you guys enjoy the rest of your trip. ❣️
Anika bacha soo cute🥰
Annika is saying her own name now ♥️
This train ride in winter is blowing your mind
Happy Journey 😄
Nice Vlogs , beautiful family god bless family 🙏🏼❤️🌸
Your daughter was looking so cute through the window 😊
Its so pure,,,i just cried all the time watching this
it's beautiful in winter when it snows
Beautifully filmed!
Joanna , You have beautiful way / knack of storytelling. Wonderful narration 👍🙏
Lovely train ride. It was fascinating watching Annikas different expressions of wonder as she took in the beauty of the hills and dales, also the way she was curious to know what was going on in the kitchen.
Thank you.
Like the vlog - able to see different aspects of Shimla particularly the outdoors. Thanks
JUST got back from Shimla BY car. SICK ALL the way home
Welcome to our city, Shimla! There are plenty of places to visit in and around the city where you can enjoy Nature to the fullest. May you have an amazing trip!

Shimla is overrated. Glad you found a nice cottage away from Shimla
Lovely, lovely vlog, rather travelogue 😀😀....Enjoyed Annika's baby words, trying to say monkey and her own name ❤️ ...It's always a good idea to stay outside big towns that are full of tourists. The tiny Himachal villages are little pieces of paradise.
I look forward to sharing my favourite himachali village soon! :)
@@JohannaNorth looking forward to seeing them through you 🙂🙂
