Most Scenic Train Ride in India | Toy Train from Kalka to Shimla

  • I think we just went on the most scenic train ride here in India from the city of Kalka right up to Shimla in the snow capped Himalaya's.
The Kalka to Shimla railway was built in 1903 of a way to get the Brittish up to their summer capital. This 96km ride on the Himalayan Queen toy train takes just over 6 hours across a narrow gauge railway.
Quick facts - we went through 20 picturesque stations, 103 tunnels, 912 curves and 969 bridges :O
In Shimla there are plenty of things to do to keep you busy - the Jakhoo monkey Temple is an ancient temple overlooking the Himalaya's and the town below.
We also went to Rashtrapati Niwas, the school for advanced studies and ended our time at Mall Road before making our way to Delhi.

The Bengal famine(1943) An estimated 2.1 million people died from starvation. This occurred due to Churchill policies.
The World war 2 lead to scarcity, they were not able to hold India .. as it was the largest colony the British had.
The Mutiny of Royal Indian Navy, The Quit India movement. All such revolts against the British were happening throughout India.

There's a reason India is called a 'subcontinent'. While it's snowing in Shimla, down here in the south, in Tamil Nadu, we're experiencing a heat wave, and a few thousand to the North, in Orissa, people are being evacuated in preparation for the landfall of a category 5 cyclone. All at the exact same time.

While it snows around dhaulagiri and the temperature is like - 10 or - 13, Gorakhpur reels under the Heat wave locally called Loo and the temperatures reach 42-43 degree celcius easily. I mean people were killed in 1857 but no country is like 'hey there ar people dying in that country for freedom. I feel bad so let's run away.' It doesn't work that way. I actually had a special gk class and my very indian professor discussed this. In fact Hitler was a big reason in our freedom struggle. Every country likes to glorify it's history. But the truth is somewhere in between. Yes there were leaders who struggled. But that's not enough. Do you realise that indians never had a full blown war where they drove the British out? The books here never clearly mention what caused them to leave. Do you think Gandhi making free salt is a good enough excuse to leave a nation? Britain because of it's decreasing influence released a lot of colonies. We were just one of them. Yes we did cause them to leave an year earlier. They were supposed to free us in June 1948 but because of the partition problem they decided to leave early and get rid of it. That's precisely why indo pak border is so random. They literally drew a free hand line on a map and left

There are some bohemian mavericks who travel to India and they do the following:
      1) Stay in cheap hotels costing US$ 5 to US$ 15.
      2) Hustle around in street markets
      3) Eat only street food
      4) Take the cheapest buses and trains across India.
They like that sort of India however many foreigners think that India is a chaotic country with poor hotels and bad transportation.

There are so many places that can easily be your favourites in India. In summer season mountains are the perfect places to go. please visit northeastern part of India, like Tawang, Shillong, Gangtok. You'll love it. I guarantee you that!
