- Trimethoprim and sulfamethoxazole combination is used in the treatment of pneumocystis jirovecii pneumonia previously known as PCP. This is a fungal organism that causes pneumonia in immuno-compromised patients. The two drugs are given in combination at a ratio of 5:1 with sulfamethoxazole at high dose. This combination is well known a co-trimoxazole and familiar under the brand names bactrim and septran.
Prescribing folic acid w/sulfamethoxazole/trimethoprim to help with action of the drug in the body.
