I think I would use a small, regular sized can of cream if mushroom, then add 1/2 can of while milk. The casserole would not be as salty yet it would be noise and a softer, not so "thick" consistency. I think for the amount of ground beef and veggies, this makes more sense!! But that is personal taste!! I love the tater tots on top!!! Wonderful!! (Oh less soup mix means less calories also.)

More often than not, if she didn't like it, she'd say something like "Not for me" or something along those lines. I take "Not half bad" as it's okay, nothing spectacular about it and it's edible but likely not something I'd make again.

I make this for my elderly parents who are originally from Iowa (just South of Minnesota.) The big differences I see are a regular can of cream of mushroom (not that giant one) with 1 cup of milk so the sauces ends up thinner. Also, I'm lazy and just dump in frozen mixed vegetables and call it a win. Finally, instant potatoes rather than tater tots, but I admit; that does sound good. I add paprika.
Considering it is from a recipe card written out by my paternal grandmother (who was born in 1900) and put in a recipe box for my mother when they got married in 1960; well, it's been around for a while. Yes, my paternal grandmother really did give her new daughter-in-law recipes to make sure she could feed her youngest son.

While they weren’t called "hot dishes" (no one in Texas would know what a "hot dish" was back then), they were all these types of one-dish casserole meals. Meat, vegetables, canned soup, and either pasta or potatoes of some sort. Once I figured out the basic concept, I made all sorts of adaptations based around whatever flavors I wanted that week. I honestly learned how to cook starting out this way with these simple, straightforward dishes. I make this every month at least!! Lol born and raised in MN!!! I bake some tots beforehand and then mix into the beef/soup mix. Top with frozen tots. Sooo good! I love this dish ❤

Yes! Fellow Minnesotan here! This looks great! Not my favorite dish, but its comforting on a cold winter day. I prefer deep frying or baking the tots beforehand for a crisper tot.

I make this every winter! I use frozen mixed veggies though, just like how my mom makes it. I also mix cream of mushroom soup with cream of potato soup. It makes it even more potatoey!

I remember my mom used to make a hot tuna noodle casserole with mushroom soup and lays potato chips on top. It was gross, but also weirdly good.

Yes, it was called Tuna Noodle in our house growing up in the 60s 70s in SE South Dakota

My mom made tuna chip loaf - tuna, cr of mush soup and smashed potato chips all mixed together and baked! She loved it, I tolerated it, she introduced it to my kids who didn't like thankfully! Way too salty and processed tasting!

I grew up with that too, we called it tuna casserole

i grew up around seafood so i loved tuna casserole but i understand why some people don't like it. if it was made on the stovetop and served right away we called it tuna a la king, but if it was baked with a crispy topping it became tuna casserole. toppings could be crushed potato chips, buttered bread crumbs or canned french fried onions.

My mom lives with me now and she quickly learned to only make enough for her...just the smell of it kicks off my gag reflex. I ate it as a child, though...

I've made this and fed my family it over the years until 10 or so years ago. I need to make it a little lighter, but it is so easy and so good! I've also varied the canned veggies. It's always good.

"It is not that bad" is not a very strong recommendation.

I think maybe she said, “It’s not half bad,” which is slightly more positive, I think. (Although I know the captions said, “not that bad.”) Personally I think it looks like something that should have died with the mid-century. Probably the only thing that would make it delicious is having nostalgia for it, which is totally understandable.

taste is subjective? just bc emmy doesn't enjoy it doesn't mean someone else wont, she's not just here to recommend you dishes but give her own reviews and enjoy making/exploring different foods

As a Minnesotan, everyone I've brought home when my mom's cooked this has always come back asking for more, just saying, you should give it a try!
