Tater Tot Casserole

  • The legacy of this hot dish has made it for 3 generations. Its a family favorite, kid friendly, and great for a freezer meal. Its super quick and easy to make and get in the oven for a weeknight meal.
    Tater Tot Casserole
    1 1/2 lbs ground meat
    1/2 C chopped onion
    salt, pepper, and garlic to taste
    1 15 oz can cream of mushroom soup
    shredded cheddar cheese
    1- 2 lbs bag tatertots
    Preheat oven to 350°. Brown ground meat and add onion, salt, pepper, and garlic to taste. Place cooked beef in a greased 9x13 baking dish. Spread the cream of mushroom soup over beef ( you may want to thin it out by adding 1/2 c milk or water. Put shredded cheese on top and top with tatertots. Bake at 350 for 40 minutes.

    Im making this tonight! Im 56 now and havnt had it since i was a kid. My mother made it occasionally and everybody loved it. It totally skiped my mind all these years. I dont know why. I was just looking for some new recipes and i watched this video. Thank you so much! 😊

    My mom cooked this for us since we were young, also in the 80's. I started using Cream of Onion soup in mine which also is delicious. I also make my veggies on the side. Cant believe I found this...lol. great job.

    We call this tater tot "hotdish" where I come from. 😊❤😊 The veg and cream soup must come out of a can. The cream soup must be Campbell's brand becuz all other brands will disappoint. Cheese is optional. We don't typically use cheese because it prevents the marriage of flavors between the meat/veg and the tater tots. We take our tater tot hotdish very seriously. Probably because we invented it here on the Minnesota-Wisconsin border. 😊 We highly recommended that you make two pans of this hotdish at a time because your husband will eat half a pan alone and the kids will eat the other half and there will be nothing left over to reheat the next day. 😅

      At a Minnesota church pot luck there were always 4 or 5 variations of this hot dish, all delicious!!

    I put tater tots first then meat then sauce. I use one sour cream and one cream of chicken Cheese on top oh so good

    So I've made this several times ans my man is obsessed. I brown my meat, drain and add taco seasoning, paprika, chile powder, garlic, and onion powder, celery and garlic salt and pepper.. yall, if the meat isn't good on its own season it it's so important. Sounds like over boarding, but it's just adding until the taste is right.

      @InTheKitchenWithDinah ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I was able to make 3 dishes right now 2 for tonight for us and the neighbor and one for later. So yummy I also just mix in whatever canned of cream goods I have usually mushroom and chicken together with some milk. Topped with cheese. 😍 Thank you for sharing.     I'm making this right now! New sub ❤ I homemade my "cream of chicken" because we are a gluten free household. I made a rue with butter and flour then added chicken stock with a whisk until it was the desired Thickness.

    I'm liking the potential versatility of this. I'd never heard of it until we got a Minnesotan on the campaign trail and he shared his recipe, lol, but I wanted to see one being made.
    Question, do you allow the tots to thaw before putting them on or straight frozen?

      Hi Callie - Welcome! Tatertot Casserole has so many possibilities! I do not allow the tots to thaw - it makes it super fast since they have plenty of time to bake in the oven. Even when I make it ahead and put it in the fridge to bake on a later date, it always comes out delicious!! Have fun being creative and making this delicious dish!

      @InTheKitchenWithDinah Last few months just learning how to cook. Thanks to my Ex GF. I would make salads for her. She loved it. Then I started researching on how to cook so I could please her. I starting making hee breakfast Crispy bacon & soft scrambled eggs. She loved it. I made spaghetti one time, she & her family asked how I cooked it & if I could do it again. So I will always appreciate the fact She inspired me to learn how to cook. I'm 66. always a frozen food microwave kind a guy. I really like cooking. Few weeks ago I made a birthday cake for myself.     I made this with vegetarian "Beyond Beef" and it was DELICIOUS. Thank you so so so much for the simple recipe, it's perfect. I did add Goya Adobo seasoning to the beyond beef. It's got garlic and onion powder in it.

    Yummy. Gonna try it like this next time. I mix the meat, green beans, chicken cream of soup all together and then I put cheese on top of it and the tater tots on top of the cheese. I will layer every thing next time the way you do, I bet that would taste awesome as well. My wife likes when we eat this because I always make it myself. If it was up to me we would eat this once a week.

    I've noticed quite a few tater-tot recipes recently, but yours is my favorite of them all, but part of it is because your video is great, right up to the very end, you're fun to watch. Oh also I like my veggies in it, once I was out of mixed veggies, so I used a can of whole kernel corn & scallions, French green beans are great in it as well.

    Love it, looks super easy and more importantly delicious. My mom made a variant of this when I was growing up. Oh yeah, did you buy your apron with cooking with Dinah on it or had it made? I have a sister named Dinah and she would get a kick out of it.

    if I made it and froze it would I let it thaw out all the way before cooking ...like take it out in am before work and then when I get home like 3-4 pm ...

    Lost me at leaving the veggies out, I understand it though. And the cheese is okay, but not necessary.
    Tater Tot Casserole
    Ground hamburger cooked
    French cut green beans drained
    Golden kernel corn drained
    At least one big can of Cream of mushroom soup
    A layer of tater tots
    Cook at 350 degrees Fahrenheit for 20 minutes

      cheese is not strictly required, BUT it makes it sooooo good. If there is a dairy intolerance DF cheese works great

      I have a can opener that leaves a smooth edge on the can and cuts it open that way, it cuts the can on the side, I have a hard time getting it all out using the pull tab plus the raw edge cuts my spatulas.

      I serve it right away! As soon the family gathers around the table, we eat. So to specifically answer your question maybe 3-5 minutes....LOL

      that sounds delicious! the tater tots crisp up pretty well without the butter- but as the saying goes everything is better with butter!
