2022 Dacia Duster review - has it got too posh?

  • The 2022 Dacia Duster still promises affordable everyday SUV practicality… but the top-spec Prestige model I've tested is more than £20,000 and has tech you still don't get in some premium cars. What gives? Has the Duster got too posh? Or is it a shrewd buy? Join me and find out!

Personally they remind me of cars from 10 years ago, and I mean that in a positive way. Simpler and more honest....I don’t want a digital dashboard...I like scratchy wipe clean plastics...I don’t want to go 0 to 60 in 8 seconds...and I don’t want to spend 30k plus for a new suv..... yep I might go to the Dacia dealership tomorrow and try one out 🤔....

Just got mine yeasterday. Dacia Duster Extreme 130HP version. Had a little drive with my son thru the rush hour city and a little trip to our weekend house outside the city, but you drive basically from town to town...so 44MPG. Beautiful. The engine is very refined, and works well with the light car. It is not over or under powered. It has all the bells and whistles that I didn t even see in the prospect. Driver monitoring system, hill holder, tire pressure sensor, all the cameras etc. And it drives well, the seats are not bad, the interior is hard plastic, but it doesn t look bad. Frankly I am glad to sit in a "back to the roots" car. It has all the bells and whistles of a modern car with all the safety assistants, and it is simple to use. I am very happy with the car a great value for the money.

I have to smile when people say 150 BHP is not enough. I took my test on a Triumph 2000 that got by with 90 bhp, as did the Rover 2000. I think the Rover 2000TC had about 102 BHP and was considered "Quite fast". Testers tend to go out of their way to find something to criticise on a Dacia, and I'm so pleased you avoided that trap and gave it what I think is a very fair review. Its certainly on my list these days whereas the first generation Duster was worthy, but a bit wide of the mark dynamically for me. This one seems to have upped the Duster game measurably.

I'm on my 3rd Dacia. 1st was a long time ago in North Africa and oddly a downgrade from my trusty Lada. Which died finally in Morocco. I was lent a Tangier assembled Dacia, based on a Renault something. The rear seat belt was a long strap across the back seat. Only the front windows would wind down and was lethal over 50mph. 20 years later I need a car in London, Euro 6. I buy for 12k an almost new 65 plate Duster. 70,000 miles and 5 yrs later p/ex for £7,000 and got another ex demo 71 plate Prestige 15dci. The old Duster was practice and good value and felt it on long caravan trips to France. The new car, has comfortable seats. That alone makes it worth the £17,200 I paid. Same engine, except has adblue. Pulls the wobble box easily and seems another excellent value for money car. I have friends who laugh at my Duster, yes I could spend more. Or spend money elsewhere enjoying life. Yes is a better car, hardly posh.

Not as many service stations around as I’m comfortable with but prices between 63p ltr to £1 a litre… mustn’t grumble. I get about 38mpg on gas and 43mpg on petrol at the moment. @@markcassidy5883 you will indeed, buddy! I’ve come from a C4 Cactus 🌵 returning 65mpg diesel. Your 50ltr LPG tank will not take more than 40ltrs (expansion, etc.) but here’s my calculations:
      40ltr X £0.8 = £32 (LPG)
      40ltr X £1.75 = £70 (diesel)
      40ltr X £1.60 = £64 (petrol)
      Then I’ll calculate equivalent MPG:
      40ltr LPG = 380miles (9.5miles ltr)
      40ltr Diesel = 560miles (14miles ltr)
So you can see, even when prices settle back down a little more in the future, although diesel is more economical per ltr MPG, whereas LPG is more cost effective 😉👌
