  • If you’re going to be building or converting anything using the gear puller is an absolute necessity. I have a whole box of different sizes shapes and flavors. In the video I go through some of the things I’ve learned through the years.
    Here an Amazon link to one like mine:

    Is there any big advantage of expensive bearing pullers over say the $20 set of three Harbor Freight ones? There are pullers that cost ~10x as much and it's not clear what their benefits are.

    • @ScottieFredWettstein
      @ScottieFredWettstein Před 2 lety +2

      I have a bearing puller that is rated for several thousand lbs and I use an impact gun on it. If you have something truely stuck then a $20 set of three is not going to hold up to a 5' cheater bar or impact gun like an $80 rated puller will. The threads will likely fail on the puller for a cheap one.

      @@ScottieFredWettstein thank for the reply. I wonder if more expensive pullers also seat themselves more easily. Getting the three legs of cheap ones I got to stay put while I tighten the central rod is really a Sisyphean task.

      @@perspectivexI know this a year later but... I just ordered a cheap set, but I only need it to get the clutch off of a 49cc 5/8" shaft, nothing automotive or industrial.
      But here's a tip: use a torch on the pulley (or gear or clutch or whatever) where it meets the shaft to make it expand like whenever you run hot water over a stuck jar lid so that you can open it more easily. If the two parts - pulley and shaft - are rusted and therefore fused together, the torch will help break that bond as well. You can also try to drip some Liquid Wrench in there.
      An idea to keep the jaws held in place is use a large enough rubber band or even wrap some kind of stretchy tape such as electrical tape.
      I just wanted to share for anyone else who came across this.

      @@adamcolbertmusic thanks for the reply. I don't remember my exact problem but I think it was just the jaws always falling off, not that the bearing was stuck. I vaguely remember I tried a rubber band and it didn't help that much but I'm not sure anymore.

      Harbor freight tools r considered 1 time use tools. I bought solar panel light for my cabin 350 miles away from my house. I went home charged the system it worked perfectly two days later at my cabin sh! T didn't work! 😠. So now I only shop there for the bug racket,

    • @livefree6878
      @livefree6878  Před 2 lety

      Any grease is fine. It’s best if you use the same grease each time. There’s a few combinations of grease that react adversely if you mix them. If you’re concerned about mixing grease just wipe off the old stuff and put on anything new. Hope this answers your question
