  • In 2017 many people are getting into the Audio Book Narration Profession. The requirements concerning the ACX, as well as other Audio Book distributors are both extensive as well as easy to accomplish if you can grasp the basic concepts of Audio Requirements.

There are a few things that trap beginners. Unfortunately it applies here. All amplifiers and pre-amplifiers has noise. Individual manufactures can design for different front end preamp gain, which does effect the level this noise is amplified. Turning up different console pre-amp gains does not tell the noise level of the pre-amp. What is important is the signal to noise Ratio. Plug a mic into that channel and talk into that mic, and you will find the signal is well into clipping. The noise level with the signal at normal level is the important number here. Just because that mixer can be turned up to +50db gain and ther can be turned up to +25db gain, makes an unfair comparison of the noise floor. Set them both with a signal for about +20db gain, and then check the noise level in your recording. The Behringer mixers tend to have more preamp gain, and thus higher noise levels when cranked to the max, where you would only get feedback and clipping. There is however a difference in the noise floor of the preamps between the Behringer mixers and the upscale cousin the M32 series with true Midas Pre-Amps instead of "Designed by Midas". Glad you teach home recording. Hope you teach proper gain structure to properly set the pre-amp gain for ~-18dbFS on the meters on the vocal peaks. Should just hit the first yellow in the meter with no more than 2 yellow on the peaks. At that level, noise should be too low to be a concern if the mic placement is proper for a strong signal.

Thanks for your comment. I have been using that method for checking pre-amps for over 20 years and I doubt I will change. The difference between Midas and Behringer pre-amps is around the -110dB level and means nothing except on paper. I do teach a -18dB input for everything except percussion. Those should be around a -12dB due to the meters.

Dana, I trust All that you do, but I am a little confused...... @13:00 you show CH 1 and its noise floor in the recording but, back @ 2:55 when you thought you were applying 60Db gain to CH 1 you were actually on CH 16 when you paged over from CH 32. So CH 1 never had the gain increase like CH 2 and 3 in the initial adjustment @ 2:55. So now I wonder what the VU may have shown for CH 1 during the test.
    Thanks, Don

Hey Brother, the meter was showing a channel with 0dB gain and thanks for catching that. I went back and ran the same test with a mic on channel 32, with 60dB of gain applied. In Reaper, it showed the noise floor at -60dB. It is never a good idea to max out the gain on any mixer, but if you have to, then you want to make sure you have the mic placed correctly. As an example, if I setup that same mic for a loud vocalist, the input gain would be around 23dB to 30dB to get this signal to the -18dB on the input meter, with the vocalist just about eating the mic. Not only will this decrease the noise floor, but it will also give you the best signal to noise ratio. Whenever you are working with inputs and your noise floor is very low, by the time you add in all the other inputs, you should have very clean audio for either recording, or running live.

Hi I have a problem. Even with my volume way way low I get vibration or buzzing only on low notes when recording directly using a cable to my Beringer interface and onto either Cubase or Reaper. I have windows ten. Can you help me? I never had this problem before.

There are many things that can cause this. Are you using a DI Box, or just running into the aux ins?

Hi Dana. Thanks for the great video. I'm debating between the X32 and MR18. I hear the Midas Pro preamp in the MR18 is amazing. The X32 product description say Midas-designed preamps which makes me think they're lesser preamps. I'd really like your advise please?

Maybe one person out of a million would be able to tell the difference. Go with the X32 as it has so many more features. ;-)

That would depend on what DAW you may be using. I use Reaper and it is called Audio Statistics. You can also do a google search for the Orban Meter. It will give you those details as well. They have a free version.
