not a psychologist but i studied it in school and it is DEFINITELY a real thing to be attracted to people that look like you. it’s called birds of a feather effect and it’s an evolutionary instinct that you want to continue your bloodline and have them look like you.
Along with that, humans have a tendency to replicate traits in others they like or respect, because the intrinsic trait for evolution says "they're better than us, let's be more like them so we can be better too" leading people to over time become slightly more like those they respect, love, and look up to.
In the context of clothes, hair styling, and sometimes intrinsic actions
Ex: One person opens a can in a way you think is cool, and you replicate it
But I thought you go for people who appear genetically different so your children are healthier.
Does there have to be a balance between that and birds of a feather? Maybe you go personally traits that you see in yourself and what you've been commonly exposed to in society

I think I read somewhere that it has to do with genetics, i.e. by having a similar mate, you "predestine" your offspring certain features, while complete opposites means a larger gene pool and less chances for recessive illnesses and such. Wondering what exactly determines that choice 🤔

i study psychology and in alot of my classes when we talkabout love and stuff there is a saying that you usually marry someone who looks similar to you but there is not a ton of data or research that supports that
As a psychology student, I just learned that, yes, there's huge evidence that people are more attracted to others who has similarities than differences (from personality, skills, and even looks). In fact, despite the "opposites attract" being a popular thing in media, there's very little evidence to back it up and way more to go against it.
