  • Dragon sculpting demonstration, first clay. Its always exciting to see the clay go on these sculptures!! Its just getting past the armature part, for many that is not so exciting.. lol. All I am trying to achieve at this point is to get a good even coat of clay on the armature, covering the tape and foil completely. Proportions may not appear quite right, and no details like muscles were yet added. I sculpt in stages, and in this particular stage I cover the cover the armature to get a better idea of what I'm working with. I will be add plecty more clay on the back legs for sure!
I plan on doing the wings last so they don't block the camcorders view, and the feet will go on last too so they don't get damaged from the work I have yet to do. The wings will get a steel screen sown onto them to give added support to the thinner areas on the wing section.
I hope you enjoyed this little video, I sure enjoyed making it! Let me know what you think so far that would be awesome! Thank you so much for being patient too!!!The last two days I have been painting the inside of a friends new business (I'm so sore LOL) But I'm done...for now. This video would had been uploaded 2 days ago =/ Thanks again for watching!!

Yes that is fine. In fact I recommend it now because the white is so hard to see and VERY loose/messy The only reason I used it was to save money being this costs half the price of super sculpey does. It was to help me shape the definition a little better, you can only get it so close with foil and tape alone lol. Its been a while since I made this and now I prefer to use either super or a 50/50 mixture of super and firm (grey sculpey).. Either way, It can go directly on the tape =D

No problem! No I am cooking this when its done.. But it will most likely be a 30 minute bake.. So what I will do (maybe) is bake the body and head first for 15 minutes, then bake it again for 15 minutes when I have the wings done... this way they don't get over baked. =D

I'm meaning the thickest setting of a pasta machine. I like to work with sheets of clay. (NOTE: if you use a pasta machine it has to be dedicated to your polymer clay and can't be used for food afterwords) And they run about $24

I agree that would look awesome! But there is a technical problems doing that, unfortunately. This is a rather large sculpture, and the wings will be subject to braking if I don't use some kind of steel screen in between the wing bones. And If I use translucent, the metal will no doubt show. =( Also, in my mind I envision dragons as heavy, massive beasts. And to support such a weight, the wings would have to be thick as cow hide, if not THICKER! Maybe I can do that if I make a smaller one.. :)

Well, polymer clay is a type of clay. And Sculpey is a brand name, super sculpey is one of the several styles of sculpey clay (medium firmness) So you have sculpey original, which is the cheapest and softest (white). Super sculpey (flesh colored), and finally you have Super sculpey FIRM, which is grey and the firmest (obviously LOL) There is also Sculpey III, which is the colored clay.
So sculpey is a brand, with several grades of clay. And all have a unique purpose. Hope that helps a little :)

The company that made the white clay you see in this video also made "Super Sculpey" (pink) and "Super Sculpey Firm" (grey) Hope this helps

Great job! Is the white clay also one to bake it like the skin-colored one? Or is that one which get hard in the air? The question is maybe a bit silly, but the polymer clay had another name here in Germany and also different types, like dry in the air, bake it in the micro wave or in the oven. And the skin-colored one is to bake it in the oven? (sorry for my bad english :o)

Thin as in loose? If that's what your meaning sculpey original is VERY loose clay and can become very messy if over-conditioned/worked. Sculpey Original is the EASIEST of polymer clay's to get because they sell 1 lb boxes of it at Wall-Mart (if you were asking about something else let me know lol)
