- Polymer clay dragon sculpture, in progress! Now I am even MORE excited then the last video!! Putting those wings on this dragon really helped boost my confidence level.. All I had to do way try, instead of fretting. Still working to keep these video simple, learning is seeing. If you have any questions I will try my best to answer them.
It is important to bulk out the armature with foil to save clay reduce complications from baking clay too thick. What happens is the thick part is usually not baked enough, OR, if you do bake it enough the thinner part (like the wings) will be over baked, resulting it possible burning or browning..
The body area will still get a lot of clay though, and I may even add last minute foil if I feel its needed.
The tape is to protect the clay from the foil and the clay also sticks better to tape. Also, the seams of the foil can work apart during the claying part. Another reason I add tape.. Have you ever messed up and had to take a sculpture apart? You will have a bunch of tiny foil pieces in your clay, its a mess!
Thank you all for being a part of this project, this channel, and for all the help and encouragement.. This all would be nothing without you..

And HAPPY SCULPTING!!! - Jak na to + styl
YEP!! I was unsure at first.. but once I got pass making the armature part of the wings, It was settled.. This creation will FLY! And thank you, I WILL!!
thanks for sharing this wonderful video. Beginners such as me find them very helpful. all part of the puzzle of the creative process.
Thank you so much for taking the time to help people like me get used to making armature. I've been using polymer clay for 5 years now and armature I seem to struggle with now I'm getting into more bigger and detailed sculptures. So thank you for your help Tom :)
You are a born teacher as well as an artist. Your voice and ability to explain your process is so open, relaxing and creative.
Awesome job dude! I'm learning a lot about sculpting from you and your videos! Keep going, you're doing an amazing contribution for those who just start in this fascinating world of sculpting! I'm gonna show you what I have in mind to sculpt when I am ready! Thanks a lot man!
Wow thanks for the tips!! Especially pre-wrinkling of the aluminum foil!! And putting tape on top.
I can already see it flying and burning the village down!
Can't wait for the next step.
:)
I was wondering about the tape in the oven and you answered my questions. Very thorough and informative. I just did a foil only base and you're right. It leaves lots of bits of clay behind
Your tutorial for this dragon is so helpful, thank you!
I visit your channel every few months or so. I always end up laughing with joy and wonder as I see your process and awesome creativity in action. This is great stuff. I'm so looking forward to seeing the videos of this dragon project as it progresses. You mention in several videos that you are, "learning-as-you-go-along." Take heart Mr. BroodingTom! Thanks to these videos, we can learn right along side with you (success and failure inclusive.) You and we are all learning together! Great stuff!
Amazing, love your tutorial.
Answered the doubt that I was having: there's no way I can bake my sculpture with tape around the skeleton. Good to know that I can! Going to start my first oven-baked sculpture, and knowing that I can keep the skeleton tight and clean with tape is relieving. Thanks for the advice and sculpting walk-through. :)
Fantastic! I'll be using this method soon so ty for sharing!
OMG! I love all your colors and the Dragon sculpture
Thank you so much for the addition of telling that tin foil is a bit annoying at the seams (struggling with that right now) and also that tape CAN handle being baked. Was exactly what I needed! Thank you.
great work so far Tom, can't wait to see more!!! The wings make the difference!!!
I am so glad I stumbled onto your videos!!! THANKYOU for the INSPIRATION!!! I LOVE YOUR WORK!!!
Looks fantastic!!!
OMG I can't believe how much I learned in this quick tutorial!
Thank you so much for your step by step video's I made my first dragon from this and so pleased with it , so thanks again
Thanks for the tutorial, you're amazing! I'm so glad to see this because I've always tried to do a wire and foil base so I didn't have to use as much clay but I couldn't get it to come out very pretty. Thanks for the tips and tricks!
AWWWWESOOME Armature! Nice job.
Can't wait for part 3!!
Thank you so much for making this video! I was struggling with the idea of making a wire dragon armature and wasn't sure how to bulk it out, but your foil and tape method looks perfect for what I need. Thank you again!
Ooh this is definitely exciting, can't wait to see the process! :)
I love your work and you are a great inspiration to me and my work-Thanks for sharing and I can't wait for part 3,I hope it's not too far away in the making-Exciting stuff :)
I wish you had more subscribers. Your work is so creative and amazing, I just love it. You've inspired me to try making larger sculptures from clay. Thank you so much for doing what you do.
thanks for showing and explaining the foil and tape

thats amazing!
Excellent! I’m about to make a smaller dragon and your tutorial is very helpful.
thank you I've learned so much from you!
i am sooooo excited i can't wait for more this is gonna be so cool amazing skills!!!
Very true... (if) I do it right, it could become a great referencing for future dragon makers.. I can only hope for something like that. But first, I have to succeed in making a awesome dragon.. Thank you so much!
nice work :) cant wait to see it finished..
Wow! Very nice structure for your project! Those wings look amazing just as wire. Can't wait to see the rest of the process. I LOVVVVE dragons and fantasy creatures. :)
I really can't wait to see how amazing it's going to look when you're finished :D
looking great! :)
Thank you, you inspired and amazed me.
Awesome! Can't wait to see how it'll turn out! Made my fantasy-fan heart skip a beat :D
This is perfect !!! thank you
Am i the only one who thinks this can help with anatomy for art??? and Tom! i dont know what to say! this already looks perfect!
I'm very excited to see how this one turns out! :)
Thank you I appreciate that!! They will come, it just takes time and a little "planning" In the near future I will be collaborating with 3 different channels.. I have a LOT to do!
I'm glad you are inspired to go bigger, and try new methods.. That awesome!!
Thanks for the aluminium/tape tips, you'll help me to save lots of material. :)
I still love this tutorial and when I first watched it it inspired me to make this dragon, but I moved back to Texas from Ill three years ago and this is the stage it is right now. I haven't finished it at all. It's blue painters tape and wire right now. Looks kinda cool sitting on the shelf unfinished. haha
Beautiful, compliments non vedo l'ora di vedere il seguito ^_^
I LOVED THAT MOVIE!!!! It was one of those movies you DON'T want to end =( A LOT of thought went into that movie, even the planet itself was brilliant! Very believable... for me.
I like you color pencil set up
Wonderful. It is good to know about the tape!!! :-)
Very cool
Che belloooo! Io sono affascinata bello
Thank you for this instruction
You're very welcome. And thanks for commenting it's much appreciate.
this is beautiful. thank u
amazing
this will be my Favorited one
I have just purchased material to begin to learn polymer clay sculpting and I really want to try a dragon but felt like I was being too ambitious. Watching these videos I believe I can definitely start with a dragon because you have broken it down so nicely into easily understandable instructions. It certainly won't be of the caliber of your sculptures but I'm hoping it will at least be something I won't be too embarrassed to display. LOL Thanks!
Thanks, glad you are liking it!!
Yep! I do listen.. And I very much appreciate all the feed back I get, this channel would be nothing without that. Also, it didn't hurt adding the wings, and I lost nothing taking some advice. So thank you for the help! =D
thank you
WOW!!! Dan, you honor me!! Thank you SO MUCH!!! Btw, I finally got a idea for a paper mache project!!! ..It took me long enough, huh? LOL I can't wait to give it a go. I'll have to visit your website for the paste formula..
Thank you for all that you have done for the world of ART, you are awesome my friend!
So it is going to be a dragon? I love it! Keep going!
Thank you! This is great!! =)
can't wait to see it when its all finished,,before I started watching your videos, about 5 weeks ago,I tryed my hand at making a geko, just a small miniature one, just to see if I could do it,!!it went wrong a few times, but then it had a dragon look to it, so I thought,OK its transformed from geko to dragon, so I placed it on a flat beach stone or pebble, then, decided to add some glitter,,it ruined the whole thing, way to much glitter, but I still have him,to remind me not to make that mistake again ,basicly I spoilt it,even my dragon don't look happy!!
woo!! you took my advice yay i feel special lol
no problem!
Thank you... I am finding this very inspiring ...Pete from the UK
Hey was gonna send a pm, and couldn't figure out how.
I'm a cake decorator and I've been using polymer clay stuff as inspiration for edible sculpture toppers for a while. This was some of the most helpful stuff I've ever seen. Started out by watching the elephant video to try and figure out armature and ended up watching the full dragon playlist because that's what I'm currently trying to make. ;p Isn't that just the way it goes. It's amazing the crossovers in technique between cake art and polymer art. Thanks for the videos.
cool, I seen your other videos and your good at the body stuff, please take your time on the head and face features. this has the potential to come out awesome. Thanks for the vid.
Thank you! And me either!! =D
Every now and then I get that question.. So I made it a point to say that in the video for those that are new to polymer clay and want to use my "style" of sculpting to produce their own work from it. You ask me "are you sure" when I have baked over 17 different sculptures, in my oven, with tape inside them. To answer your question, yes, I am sure, without a doubt [as long as the manufacturer's instructions are followed. Which are printed on every package of polymer clay, regardless of brand]
cool this vid cleared up one of my questions :)
I knew I was forgetting something when making this cat. I forgot to pre-wrinkle the foil, that explains why I was having a hard time bulking it out. I gotta remember this. Thank god I came back to watch you make this dragon. it's been sitting in my must views section for a while. But working on my spiders I by passed it looking for images of the spider.
This is smart
I've made p.clay dragon
Was really fun
amd It looks pretty good
u made it fly at the end HAHAHAHA lol nice. i love this step by step video you r doing. awesome job and smart!
Thank you, it all happens in steps.. and the more steps I take the more sure I am. =D
He was beautiful... for sure! And I love all the colors you mentioned... its a GOOD thing I can make more then one dragon... too many awesome colors. Technically, a dragon can be just about any color, a good reason why they are so awesome!
Thanks!! :D
Wow! this is apazing! im gonna subsribe to you. i used to draw and i was going to try to get into gifted art... but ive given up on that. im just not as good as i should be if i were to be in 8th grade GA. ive wanted to sculpt, we just dont have enough money to buy anything. keep going though! i love seeing you do this stuff. you have SO much talent!
I also just saw comment from DanMonsterMan.
Wow!
You're getting recognized by a big boy!
Keep up the good work man. :)
Thanks!!! And yes, watching it come to life is just as grand as seeing it done.. I agree! I sure hope it will be my best... And I am not sure, what you ask is complex. You see, once I make something it is like practice work.. Then I more on. Only when I do something several times could it be great, like my bigger king cobra.. So far I would have to say that one. But eventually I will start making things I already know to master them. Does that make since?
great...if u were excited...imagine we, your followers...great again
Good base, and totally agree on using just tinfoil without tape being a mess. Did that a few times now and half the clay gets ruined >> lol
I know, right?! What a honor!!!
this was totally cool!! I tryed doing a dragon before, but with paper mache and polymer clay, but That broke and I messed up the face! i'm really interested in the part where you start sculpting the face! Its going to be so amazing! :D Can't wait for part three too!! :) I want to go sculpt a dragon right now but have no materials! lol you inspire me!!! XD
Thnanks!! And I am feeling the same way.. wow I hope it turns out o.k. =O
Another great video, well done. Any recommendations for intro to sculpting books that you may have come across? Look forward to more videos. Thanks for sharing your knowledge.
Thank you so much!! Hope it does justice to all dragon lovers.. =O
I am anticipating the final product but also enjoying the stages in creating this dragon. Always cool stuff and informative. I just KNOW this is going to be your best ever!
By the way - what project have you done that YOU personally feel the most proud of?
me too, I may do a different video though before part 3.. I want to do a quick marbling tutorial. To keep things fresh. =D
WOW, that is awesome!! I know... fantasy is so loved! I just hope I do good, we will see! =D
thank you so much for this video. I used to just use a fuckton of clay to bulk out my sculptures, and they were HEAVY
I used the aluminum foil and tape. Much much lighter for even larger sculps
Very Nice Tom, adding the wings will make this sculpture special. Have you chosen your colors yet???
Thank you for making this video. I was inspired to make one myself but i ran into several issues. the wire i used wouldn't support the weight of the clay. >.> I thought that was no big deal I would just bake it upside down. Well after several days working on it making 1 cm or smaller scales all over it he got squashed under a grocery bag. -_- I will remake him but I'm going to use better wire next time.
Thank you!! And don't they?! =D
+Polymer Clay Artist - The armature is amazing by now!!!
That looks great!
Any idea how to make wings without armiture wire?
I went straight from wire frame to foil and then a tried to add the clay but it would not stay on. . Will try tape over the foil see how that works. Thankyou.
Any type of clay that shrinks cannot be put over a wire base, rigid form, or "armature". Because when the clay is fired or air cured it will crack badly, if not wind up completely destroyed. Polymer clay has less then 1% shrinkage, so it can be wrapped and baked around fine glass even!! And your welcome, no problem. =D
