Mav 88 is the best choice for me, and not just because I already have one. It has the same mechanism as the Mossberg 500 and Mossberg 590. Most of the parts are interchangeable, but since the Mav 88 doesn't come drilled and tapped you can't use the picatinny rails that are ready for the 500/590, but plenty of options exist for the Mav 88 alone! Mav 88 is the Ford, the Mossberg 500 is the Mercury and the Mossberg 590 is the Lincoln.

For anyone looking at sub 300 dollar pumps, I recommend the EAA Churchill. It’s a CZ 612 clone and comes with ghost ring, pic rails and pistol grip with threaded Benelli choke tube. It has the smoothest action of all the budget shotguns I tried and it runs like a top.

Love the spring for auto return if the forearm and it didn't mess me up so leaving the spring in as is. I bought fir home defense and the less than 7 lb of weight as well. The only thing I'm adding is a flashlight / green laser combo for under the barrel in case of low or no light conditions. Lastly I've put through all kinds of loads with no issues so it's not picky on loads like some are. Extremely pleased

The Maverick has been a beast since it came out. My youngest daughter took her first buck with the Maverick in 2003 @13. Your Remington shotgun could be either a Remington "UMC" model 1909 or model 10 less then 4000 were made. Dates around 1909, the Model 10-A had a wooden heat shield on it used in WWI if the original barrel is around 20" it is definitely a Model 10 A. The end piece is a Lyman Cutts Compensator I believe. I've have owned both models that were handed down to me in the 70's

I recently went out to buy the Mossberg 88 but, sitting right next to it for only $30 more was a Dickinson XX3D-M2 Tactical pistol grip 12 gauge pump. Originally manufactured in Turkey, it has so many features that I couldn't resist. It resembles that Tristar very much but with even more goodies! Here's the list; ghost ring rear sight with fiber optic front sight, Marine finnish in silver cerakote, picatinny rail on top for optics & rail on forend for lights, med soft rubber pistol grip, heat shield down the 20" barrel, extra large rubber recoil pad & built in 12 gauge shell holder on the stock. The choke is a door breeching compensator combo & it's got 2 sling mounts, front swivel mount is on the magazine tube cap so that it doesn't interfere with the forend or your tack light. Regular style pump action, no return asist. Saftey & release located the same as the Tristar. I think that about sums it up.

First time I have seen one of your videos....very informative and grassroots review. If I may, take a look at this combination... a Mav 88, with an OPSol Flex adapter, and minishells from Aguila, Challenger or Federal. We designed this combination specifically for our wives and daughter, who would not shoot even low recoil target rounds. Just did some practicing last night with the Mav, the 59A1, and the Shockwave.
For me, until you run 9 minishells fast through a Shockwave with brace, you don't really understand how compact and comfortable it feels. The Shockwave came out 1 year after we put some adapters in Mossberg's hands, and they specifically promoted the firearm with the adapter at Shot Show 2017.
There are lots of good shotguns, and everyone has an opinion. But only the Mossys can really run minis well, with the adapter. And yes, we have extensively looked at 870s and 1300s, but they have loading features that create issues for minis, separate from what our adapter does.
Home defense is a family effort.

The Tristar company makes a good shot gun for the buck, I own a Tristar Raptor semi automatic for the past three in a half years and never had a problem with it after the proper break in and cleaning. Then I modified the stock with ATI adjustable stock and put on MAGPUL front and rear flip up sights and I just love it. Plus there is a lot of support from CZcamsrs who own the same shot gun and it was very helpful . This is just my opinion, but the Tristar line is pretty damn good for what you pay for !

The cut and threaded muzzle is typical "polychoke" of the 50s mod, pretty sure they sold both fixed choke sets and the adjustable polychoke system (both so your single barrel could adapt to any sporting situation from close quarters brush bunnies to clay busting on a range)

The external screw on choke was probably added to the Remington in the 70s. Winchester developed the interchangeable choke in 1959, they had some issues. In 1969 Winchester came out with the Winchoke system, which ushered in the interchangeable choke era. Retrofits like that one were attempts to update older shotguns. I think patents prevented others from using the internal choke tubes until the mid 80s, which is why the barrel was threaded externally and why companies marketed other options.

I own the 88, and have no issues with it, other than Mossberg continually being out of stock on the 18.5" barrel (mine has the original 28"). I also bought the Tri-Star Cobra III recently, but without the pistol grip. Great gun, especially for the price! My arms are long enough to comfortably reach the forearm action (I'm 6'5"), but I did remove the action-return spring. It seemed like a nice bonus feature in the beginning, but I found myself short-stoking the rounds more often than I liked.
