Is Total US Better Than Totilas With Edward Gal?

- Edward Gal and Totilas won the hearts of many around the world. When Totalis passed away at the end of 2020 it left many equestrians wondering what happens next. With Valegro, Totilas and Verdades all gone from competition it seems there is some big shoes to be filled in the dressage world, and more importantly in the hearts of the fans.
In an older interview with Dutch newspaper NRC, Gal stated he believed Total U.S. is better than Totilas.
We have only seen Total US in competition 3 times. Once as a 6-year-old and twice last year in the Prix St George. Where he won the freestyle with an 80.5%.
Total US is set to make his Grand Prix Debut in February and we couldn't be more excited about what this partnership has been hiding, and more importantly what they have to offer!
We put together some video of Total US and Edward Gal last year in the Prix St George. The Oldenburg bred stallion is 9-years old and is by Totilas x Sir Donnerhall. He is bred by Paul Schockemöhle and owned by Gaston Glock.
In a year where many questions remain about the future of dressage, we are left waiting in eager anticipation as to whether Total US and Edward Gal are in fact better together than Totilas and Edward Gal.

Totilas is the only horse I've ever seen that seemed comfortable and presented a 'pleasurable' overall picture with this kind of training, whether that's right or wrong. I think it was in part due to his conformation - he had a short, thick neck and a natural upright carriage even as a five year old and his frame later was somehow reminiscent of a war horse statue - and in part because he had the mind for it and was game.
I don't see that here. I see Total US emphatically demonstrating the downside of these particular training techniques, that Totilas masked so emotively.
He is still quite young but you can tell he has been pressed and it shows in the excessive nodding in his head and dropping behind the bit.
Impressive to watch these talented horses and sad to know this horse showed a great deal of agitation at the end of the test.
It's great to see beautiful horses but to me to see the mud fences that are properly trained and becoming stronger more supple and more beautiful while they are still happy is far more a testament to true dressage training.
So many people have no clue as to how many horses are ruined at a young age bye the desire of international riders and competitors, as well as amateurs with enough money to either breed or by athletic, talented horses.
Total US works nice and precisely...Totilas enjoyed dancing!
He has a gorgeous free walk. The horse is phenomenal, but I don't see the smooth and through togetherness yet. These are very difficult horses to ride.

I don't know, just from watching this, there is something I just don't like very much about this horse. The horse doesn't look entirely comfortable or maybe it's something else? I'm no dressage judge.
Much straighter and more even than Toto, thought that is no fault of Toto himself. It seems less about the individual horses and Like Edward Gal has improved his training.
The exaggerated movement pattern at the trot of both Totilas and this one is artificially trained. The question is, which one responds better to Gal's training regime.
Total US seems to have a more active hind leg. I'm still not a fan of all the up-front movement. Freedom of gait is important, but extravagant movement will invite fatigue.
It’s not pleasing to the eye, IMO, either, because it’s starting to look a little too reminiscent of a carriage horse and too far away from dressage.
Its also important to note that it makes for an incorrect extended trot as u can see here. The horse's lower hind and upper front leg should stay parallel when the front leg its t its highest. That is not the case here. They bend their front legs so that the upper front leg is nearly horizontal. They should automatically get a 4 for that, cause that's a Spanish trot, not an extended trot
The biggest can of worms ever, inviting the longest comment ever lol.....I loved reading the comments here particularly the brilliantly familiar and graphic description from @spellywelly of the "war horse statue" with its thick neck and front end off the ground majestically on it's plinth. Who hasn't seen that horse performing the levade in countless paintings from Napoleon to Louis XIV and James I, King of England, bronze statues abound in the same way, a classic pose meant to convey the magnificence of both the horse but most definitely also the rider. We ask ourselves isn't this the ultimate aim of dressage, free up the front end by asking the horse to sit?
The answer is yes, yes it is but it's also so much more or all we would have would be horses hopping on the spot on their back legs like Macropodidae, front legs flailing in the air for balance .....so no it's not the only aim in dressage by a long shot. Total US seems to be doing the Macropodial plinth thing a lot at the expense of everything else that we need to see in dressage, including lengthening, stretching working over the back to the poll into extension, change of rhythm change of gear if you like. Instead he has a tendency to a fixed frame curl his head into his chest and hollow his back, the rider clearly having to cleverly prompt him to lift his head in case he evades the bit entirely. All this for a flash trot. Much like those old statues and painting, however given what was in their mouths it's not surprising they preferred to evade all contact.
Yes this horse is stopped in the front so the legs shoot out the front. Yes I think this horse is better than Totilas AND because they're basically exactly the same. The big difference, and there is one is that Totilas was so much more of the same that his back legs just couldn't maintain the push, he was more hollow. This horses however manages to step up and is less hollow however it's not enough to give us the impression he can do much else. It's swimming in air desperately without covering much ground at all even in the extended trot, much like the drowning horse. No lengthening. The rider meanwhile appearing to sit slightly slouched over like a Big Lick rider in the US of A, the horse staying in the same frame at all times, its front legs flashy. To me this isn't dressage or the correct image we need to be seeing in dressage. At best this frame is good in the pirouette, the horse sitting, and at worst it is a form of constant evasion of true contact.
Surely the three "greats" mentioned are a subjective choise but were certainly all spectacularly different horses, but for my eye we should be seeing more of the Valegro type of softness and ability to truly lengthen in more than just a walk. A horse needs to be like a gummi ball, not fixed in one position. Verdades was special of course but due to his type he had some handicap which IMO he overcame and spectacularly so with careful, correct training. He learnt to go over the back to extend the top line up and over and to sit when needed, he learnt to lenghen, no problems in the collected.
With Totilas's passing I think we may have put that whole way of going to bed for good, at least we should have, it certainly caused him more grief than happiness in the soundness department but also just for Dressage's sake I think we need to unless dressage is to turn into a Tennessee "trotting" event.
Dressage is not just a flashy trot, each change of leg should be spectacular and elegant, soft and gorgeous, elevated and supple, like magic. I think personally it's training over type so also not Totilas's fault here either. He was there is no doubt about it a magnificent horse and right from the beginning when I saw him at the keuring as a baby. Sadly you still see this frame in some young horses sold at auction, mostly stallions are ridden this way, it's not lovely and is definitely forced. Also the less we see of it at young horse competitions the better IMO, it's just not indicative of correct or sympathetic training and masks the horses true potential. Perhaps Grand Prix tests need to include elements that show the horse is going like it should be going, and is trained correctly, because its just so often very clearly missing or even impossible.
Both horses have a very lovely walk and to me despite the hype this is when they're at their very best, leaving the arena, at least when they're both sound.
I’m sorry, but where in this video can you make a true comparison between this rider and a Big Lick rider?
@@emessenger922 Primarily In the extended trot and passage. Making comparisons with him on Totilas it's perhaps een tikje less exaggerated here, though. The sport was in danger of becoming horribly so. Judges seeing the light just in time, a good many never will though, even scoring Totilas in the 80s when he was horribly and obviously lame to all. To me that was the moment of recognition that some judges will always be one eyed hacks, populace opinion guiding their scoring and not the horse before their very eyes.
Honestly I would have loved to see this horse with someone like Charlotte Dujardin. Not a fan of Edward for many reasons.

They are already wonderful couple, and have a bright future ahead. Horse is more relaxed and confident with every newer ride i watch. Hope to see them on Olympics 2024 in Paris, untill then I expect them to beat Eds previous record with Totilas 👌
Beautifully talented, but for me doesn't show enough relaxation in the work. Maybe that will come with time as the horse becomes increasingly at ease in the work. Softness, regularity and power all need to be together.
What about Glocks Toto Jr?
For sure Total US is a fantastic horse -wheter someone is a fan of the „dutch riding style or not - to me it‘s never easy to compare horses...even of they have the same rider. In my opinion there has been that special bond between Eddy and Toto ❤️ also it‘s now 13 years ago since they competed at GP level the first time...a lot has changed in these years. When they came into high sports it was like they came from a fairytale world. Today we have a lot of nearly“unreal“ movers in the international GP-sports. Edward and Totilas were one of a kind 👍🏻 Edward and Total US will have a great future if they stay healthy and constant in their performances...one thing I‘m pretty sure of: the GLOCK family would NEVER sell a succesful horse to anybody !

Not even close to the heart and spirit of Totilas. Great horses come maybe once in a lifetime if we are lucky.
No. He rather pales in comparison. But that doesn't mean he's not brilliant.
There will only be one totillas, it is a sin to compare that horse with totillas.
