Brent, this is exactly the video I was looking for. I have the planks and I have the metal stair nose; now I can put them the stairs. Thank you for the easy-too-follow instructions and good video.
Thanks!
Great explanation thank you. I am using it on an awkward 'ledge' around my fireplace. 😊😊
Thanks for this! I’m installing this myself tomorrow. If I wait for my BF to do it, I’ll be dead by the time he finishes!
Good luck, let me know if you have any questions!
Let me get the drill and try it myself. I am tired of asking my husband who dreads to do any DIY project too!
Haha my husband is the same way! I have done ALL of the home improvement projects by myself.
Haha way to go
How do you remove old nosing nails when changing the tiles? I'm starting a full finished basement tomorrow and the only thing stressing me out is how to remove the old nosing.
Thanks I’m laying viynl planks on our stairs and was too intimidated to do metal stair nosing but i think I’m going to try now
They are pretty easy. Good luck!
That's what I was thinking of doing with my stairs also. My stairs use 2x10x35 3/4" treads and 1x8 risers nailed to the back of the threads. I need to replace the treads and risers so I'll cover them before I install. Since the metal nosings are 72" with the holes evenly spaced, I just cut from opposite ends, so I don't even need to be concerned with hole spacing. They will be not more than 1/4" from symmetrical all the way down, and I can replace one if necessary by simply cutting to length and the holes will line up perfectly. I was thinking screws, but I will consider using the nails that came with them like you did.
I think nails look better but more work to replace
Great tips. Exactly what I was looking for.
Great to hear! Thanks for watching
Cool. Big help
Loved that you made it a point to say that it’s good to get the nail holes all even. It’s these small things that make the difference.
The pre drilling is a good reminder, lol I have bent many a nails trying to hammer them in on such surfaces.
Ya it drives me crazy when people don't take the time to get the holes even. At least close. I have bent lots of nails too and bent the nosing trying to pull the nail back out haha screws always strip and look terrible if you don't pre drill as well
What size drill bit did you use
A bit slightly smaller than the nail. Depends on what nail you get. Yours may be different than mine.
@@BrentDarlington I have 1 1/4 in screw nails
@@rar20111 Smaller diameter bit than the screw, drill down a bit deeper than the length
Thanks for showing an easy way to install metal stair noses but I would have liked to see the finish product installed.
It's in the beginning of the video
Thanks for the clear video. The nosing was pretty easy to cut, and it fits perfectly.
No problem 👍
Great video. Thanks!
Nice clean work. Good stuff bud!
Thanks 😊
I just installed mine today and spayed it last night. I don't like the color I choose. But it will do for now
Exactly what I was looking for
Nicely done sir!
Thanks!
I saw a video that shows your predrilled hole should be twice the thickness of your nail. Allow for expansion ?
For floating floor? Just through the floor and not subfloor?
@@BrentDarlington Right. But some guys say you just need to predrill a small hole. They think a larger hole might make the nosing loose ??
Hi Brent!! Your stairs look great.I am going to use the peel and stick vinyl planks on my stairs. I already ripped up the carpet! Can I use these metal stair noses over my rounded stair noses?? I’m trying to find a product that will work over my rounded stair noses. Thank you!!
My stairs were rounded for carpet too. As long as they aren't too round you should be good. If they are too round, you may need to cut them back a bit to square them up. Gluing them on with pl premium or similar helps too
@@BrentDarlington Thank you so much for your advice! I’m going to start ripping up my carpet upstairs this week, and then onto finishing up the stairs!! It’s a lot of work, but it will be so much nicer. I love the way your stairs turned out. Should I use pl premium, as well as, nails, to secure the metal stair nosing?
@@Crazydoggy123 I only use pl if the wood nosing is really rounded. Be careful with the pl. It can get messy.
@@BrentDarlington Okay, good to know!! Thank you so much! Can I post a pic of my stair nosing on here, so you can see it?
@@Crazydoggy123 I don't think you can in the comments. You can email me the pic and I can do a post if you'd like. Brent.darlington@gmail.com
How do i remove aluminum nosing with nails that are flush?
How do you remove metal stair nosings??? Nailed down
I carry a glazing bar with my hand tools. It comes in handy for jobs like this. It's a thin pry bar you can get in different lengths but I usually just one around 10". amzn.to/47x0ROZ
If I remove this, because the guy who did the job left the cut edge jagged. Can I put a new one down and put nails into same holes?
I would maybe do do different holes. The holes may be a bit too loose. You could stick a toothpick or something in the old holes if you need to reuse them.
Where do you buy those nails I cannot find them in Home Depot
Check a flooring store
Where can I purchase the metal stair nosing in this color?
Check out a proper flooring store if you can't find them at a big box store. This is call "titanium"
thanks for the tips!!
Happy to help!
Are you doing just the landing ot the entire set of stairs? Do you have a video on gluedown stairs? Thanks
I just did the landing. Carpet for the rest of the stairs. Sorry I don't have a video on doing stairs but you would follow all the same procedures as laying the floor and doing the nosing. Some floors have matching nosing as well.
Just so I understand because I have the same thing I'm troubleshooting. This nosing is essentially to hide and reinforce the seam of the lvp planks joining where the riser and tread meet? I installed glue down lvp flooring, no nose, 90 degree angle stairs and need a way to finish the edge. Nosing is so costly!
The nosing is just to finish off the step. You are pretty limited in your options for less than what the metal costs, unfortunately
Hi Brent! Are you doing any other projects to this particular house? I feel like you’re taking us through the entire floor process (which is great!)
This is my place and there are lots of things to take care of. I'm working on the baseboards right now, going to do some painting, swap out some door hardware, etc etc etc
Brent Darlington I was wondering if that was the case. You seem to have run of the place! Works out well for CZcams filming.
Yes, better for youtube and it motivates me to get stuff done around the house. After doing reno work all day, I don't want to do it in my free time
Great video..did you have to cut the wood nosing off the stair first before adding the steel nosing??
I didn't, normally you don't need to
what is the size of your stair nosing?
2" or 50mm
thank you
What gauge tin snips did you use or minimum need to use
Just regular, off the shelf tin snips
what about if I used this method on Laminate stairs?
If it is a floating floor, I would use a nosing made for floating floors that allow for movement. This style nosing would work fine for areas that don't need to "float" like the steps. Where large areas of the flooring ends, it might work if you drill larger holes through the laminate only, after you drill a pilot hole for the nail.
Nails like these have eaten my socks all the time. Lol.
Serious question though, unfinished thread nose was not cut to flush to the riser and just left and covered by metal molding as is?
You can use screws but they don't look as nice but won't work their way out if there is movement in the stairs. Yes, I leave the nosing on. You can different sizes depending on how thick the nose is. The stairs are designed with the nosing to get the right tread depth. If you cut it off the tread could be too shallow.
Well explained 👍
Thanks!
You forgot the adhesive!
I've never glued them down and haven't had a call back yet. I find that these can get damaged and it is tough to replace them if they have been glued. That being said, yes, glueing them in will help them stay put better.
I'm getting LVP on my stairs. So far, the carpet has been removed and there are 2x10 steps. I was told that stair tread boards (nosing) are needed in order to install the LVP. Can I add this to the bare 2x10 steps and then have them install the vinyl?
This type of nosibg goes on after. There are types that can go on before the flooring but I dont think that will solve your problem. You don't have a nosing? You need to attach a 1x2 to the front of the step?
@@BrentDarlington the stairs are not flush, so there is a piece on the 2x10 that comes out slightly but it is not rounded. I was told by Empire installers that the nosing needs to be curved/rounded in order for the LVP to be installed. I'm just trying to come up with an affordable solution to to make it possible for them to install without me spending a ton of money to redo the steps or replace 14+ stair treads. I thought maybe if I put this metal nosing on the edge of the 2x10s then they could do the LVP.
@@raekwonw It's tough for me to help without seeing the stairs. This nosing only works to go on top of the LVP after it is installed. Stairs and LVP can be a tricky to get right. Sorry I can't help more, best of luck with your project!
@@BrentDarlington I appreciate your help! Thanks for the video!
I thought you are not supposed to nail/screw such flooring. How they gonna expand?
This vinyl is glued down. You will need a different type of nosing for floating floors.
I don’t think plastic will expand much in such a small area as a landing or tread ! Just apply some gorilla glue adhesive to the stair nose and nail it down .
Good
Thanks
This is good. Thanks. ps nice socks, ha.
Thanks!
#brentdalington how do I make a bend on a 135 degree with that nosing there?
You will need to cut a miter
How do I do this with a floating lvp? Can I nail the nosing too? If I do nail it, how will it contract?
You could probably make it work by drilling bigger hole through just the vinyl. Pre-drill for the nail, lift up the metal and drill with a 1/4 bit just through the vinyl
Great video, much appreciated, including the porn-y music, lol :-)
Lol thanks
What nails did you use?
They are 1.5 spiral nails that come with the nosing. A lot of them come with screws. The process is the same but screw them in instead of hammer them. I prefer the nails, they look better.
Thx, I was wondering cause mine didn’t. Come with screws
Please be safe. I think Vinyl, Laminate, and hardwood are all dangerous on stairs. I know carpets are dirty. I think using a easily replaceable carpet runner may be the best way to go. You only have to fall down from a slippery stairs once to realize carpet is the safest option. Since permanent carpet is too hard to replace therefore I recommend a runner option.
What do you do for the top step?
@@BrentDarlington I started on the first riser. Mine top step is LVP. Not sure what else you can do there. Last time I slip and fell, it was a few steps down. I hated carpet so much but had no choice after that incident.
@@raymondchow8722 I always recommend carpet as well. The nosing that come with this stuff is no good. Sits too high, comes loose. Hardwood is the worst of them for slipping. This metal nosing is pretty good as far as safety but doesn't look great. Looks too commercial .
So my step is 42” wide and this stuff comes like 36” and 72”... do you think it would be too noticeable (with harp edges) to alternate a 6” piece on each side or would you just go ahead and get the long one which is just short for 2 steps🤦♂️
You don't want a joint in the nosing if you can avoid it. They do have 12' lengths.
It would be helpful if you could mention what size and type of nail you used.
The nosing usually comes with a matching nail. Usually around 1 1/4" spiral nail.
@@BrentDarlington- True, except for the long pieces of edging. Thanks for the info Brent!
Dumb question, why can’t it be glued? Nails are visible and ugly.
This type comes with the holes pre-drilled. I've never seen them without the holes. There are other types of nosing available that can be glued.

Please. No music. Struggling with it. Thank you. (Seen others say same😢😢😢). There are now videos about the difficulty hearing and how to mute 'background' music. Now seems that the music has become 'foreground'. I do know that young/old hear differently....might be that, but still very difficult to screen in your words.
