I had a cat that liked to hold them in her mouth and when I took it away she acted like I broke her heart. I wish I still had her. I buried her in the back yard. Miss all the cats I had. I am 77 and still have a cat. Love your videos and your family ❤
I am 76.We have had 3 sets of twin black cats in our 52 years of marriage. We had 1 of our present twin cats put to sleep about 3 months ago and we still miss her and the remaining twin is still yowling and craving attention. It is very sad really. They didn’t seem very close to each other but they obviously were. We live in the UK.

My backyard in North Mississippi is serenaded by cicadas when the sun starts going down. LOUD. The buzzing in the morning is insane.
New viewer….sounds just like my house when I was growing up!!! We had willow trees they loved them!!! Yep all day long !!! We used to take the skeletons and spray paint them gold and silver and make jewelry out of them …. lol!!! It was a fun time growing up !😊

When I lived in Madera California , we had stink bugs. They were not noisy but boy did they stink when you squished them.
Cicada from 'Brood13' and 'Brood 19' unfortunately hatched simultaneously - last time that happened was in 1803...🤫
How long do they stay above ground?
They said that one breed only comes out once every 225 years. My daughter has been doing some research on this. You are very correct 🙏😬

We are also Blessed with the Cicada "songs" here as well. The do quiet during the rain & night. They do drown out pretty much everything lol. I have been taking little videos of them (the woods) for a couple weeks now. They are starting to quite down a little now after the storms this past weekend. Prayers from Doniphan.
Wow, you certainly do have quite an invasion there! Thankfully you can get a little peace at night. I do feel sorry for the animals because I heard that dogs and cats especially hear things much louder than we do. Everyone will be glad when they're gone but it's something your kids will remember.
Reminds me of the grasshopper plague in the Little House on the Prairie books.

Ours are extremely loud too. Good thing is those dead bugs are making us some excellent fertilizer. I read that the total lifecycle is about 6 weeks. I found the 1st one on May 1st so we only have about 2 more weeks of this. :)

They love your house wow so loud!! I hope you don’t have to deal with them for very much longer! I’m so glad they give you a break at night! We don’t have them by us yet not sure if we will? Driving half an hour away we heard them in the forested areas! I wonder if they like a certain type of tree? We get the usual green ones. Glad you’re getting free chick and duck food!
Been told snakes especially copperheads love those noisy bugs and hide around bases of trees in hiding so please watch out for the little ones playing outside!! So glad you didn't have house damage from the storm.. "being married" lol I burst out laughing..
When I was a kid I thought the utility wires were buzzing but alas it was cicadas. 😂

@@ozarkfamilyhomestead I am so glad the cicada season is over! I love watching channels with large families and grocery hauls, not sure how you get everything done! My three children are grown, and I will never live on a farm but love seeing what it is like. I have a small garden and am still learning the basics, but it brings me joy! I also love finding good grocery buys and I do shop the sales!
Here in South Carolina were I live they were noisey even at night. It's been so much quieter the last few weeks since they must be gone.

I live 12 miles west of Springfield, Mo. We're expecting the cicadas here too. I plan to close up the house and turn the a/c on if they're as loud as yours are! Lol Cheri

I watched this with my husband, he said they were loud. I did not hear them. I have tinnitus so I guess I now have something to use when I describe my condition. I heard you perfectly although you were a little lower in volume. So strange. However enjoy your videos.
We get them here in Cape Cod, Massachusetts once every 10 years for about 3 to 4 weeks then they go back in the ground and yes they are VERY noisy.

I had to do a little research on cicadas. In Minnesota we have dog day cicadas. They make a humming noise. When I first heard that noise, I thought it was power line noise, but now I know what it is.
I couldn't tolerate that noise you've got going on. I would have to put the red sticky traps out.

Toooo noisy! Our big population came out several years ago. Wow was I glad when it was over! Our “breeds” make this sing song like “whistle whistle then a long descending slow whistle”. I still remember sitting in garage with my dad 55 years or so ago imitating their “song!” ❤❤❤❤❤
❤Janice, I have learned so much from the creators on YT and so much from you and your family. I have never heard of cicadas and this video was very educational. I had never heard the term “meat birds “. Today on one of my favorite channels I heard the name of an animal called vole. Never in all my 73 years have I heard of these. I thought they were saying moles. I haven’t looked it up yet but I do so enjoy learning new things. Sorry y’all have had such a terrible time dealing with the cicadas. They truly are loud! Can you imagine when the locust plague was used by God in the Bible? I stopped and looked up cicadas and apparently there is some similarity between them and the locusts. I did not read it because I was in the middle of writing this. So thankful that though you had some property and gardening damage no one was hurt. I lived in Shreveport, LA for 11 years and saw what tornados can do. They take most everything in their path. The winds alone can do so much damage!! The eeriness in the air, the stillness, the warmth of the atmosphere prior to a tornado is a feeling I will never forget. Thankfully, I was never in the path of the funnel. This is a safety plan I’m sure Shawn has mapped out already, but if not, would be very important for each of y’all to know what to do when they”watch” and if and when the “warning” alarms sound. This would make a great video for Shawn in safety preparedness. Do y’all have a battery operated weather radio? They come in very handy for knowing what is going on. Always have extra batteries. We have them (not this year so far) BUT they are ALOTA BIGGER . Almost double the size as those and no red eyes. Same shells and same noise though! But ours if they accidentally fly into your head you might get knocked out 😂 jk but they look like they could if they had more speed 😂😂❤ . I never knew cicadas had red eyes like that.
Yes chickens do love to eat the shells, as do raccoons. You can also bury them, or put them in your compost pile.

Let me sit down for a minute. I don’t think Poplar Bluff has enough nerve pills for me to be there right now. Do the chickens eat them? Is this the first time they showed up? And do they go back into the ground?
Chickens and ducks gobble them up! They’re only alive to mate and then lay eggs in the ground for the next batch that can take 17 years to hatch again. After they mate or lay eggs they die.
What do cicadas EAT ? The dogs 🐶 are no where near as LOUD as cicadas 🤣

Just learned what a Turkey Rangler is. Apparently you grab the turkey by the feet/legs and turn them upside down. They are supposed to like this position. This is Cicada problem is worse than the tree roaches we had in GA. I have the same illness and for four days have lost my voice as well.
Nope Id be calling someone in to remove them. Noway I could deal with that. I skipped over the whole video except when you were inside.
You could take some great photos of your bugs get the children to name the parts . It would be useful for other home schooling families. You can eat them as well and are a good source of protein. Been eaten since Greek times. There are lots of recipes on line.Have a go!
After they mate do they go back in the ground in the same holes or what i have heard them but not as loud as not near as many i could not stay outside long at all i barely made it through the video lol bless your heart

Hi. Sounds like that at night in Greece and Spain. Do you think it is linked to your weather recently?. They didn’t sound as loud as that when you were clearing up from the storm.
Yeah, I think the tree coming down in the storm really disrupted things. Plus, the sound is less when it's raining, so maybe that had something to do with it? :) Also, I think it's so, so neat that our areas can be very far apart, but still sound similar at nighttime!
