    In this video I'm going to show you how to build a small backyard deck with stairs for an above ground pool. I built this deck for my 8' stock tank pool, including a secret hatch so I can access my pump and filter. You could alter this deck to make it bigger or smaller, fit a different sized pool, add on railings or move the stairs. The possibilities are endless. Grab the build plans below for the detailed info and measurements!

    Tip, notch post wherever you can so instead of only screws holding all the weight your notch will and also be much stronger. Very impressed with what you did and you could be very good with experience.

    What a nice build. If we had had such a deck, my childhood pool would have been so much more luxureous! And it would not have caved in, when someone accidentally fell on the rim. 😁 Some additional ideas: You might take a router and smooth out the cut off edges, it's easier on the flesh while sitting there. Stairs are really comfortable when all steps are the same size. Here, the top step seems lower, and the step down higher than the others, so I'd lower them a bit. If you put another row of pavers in front of the stairs, your whole feet have a firm and mud free basis, the size of the treads.

    I've been watching all your videos in preparation for building my stock tank pool and deck in spring '24. I already have the 8' poly tank stored in my garage. In this video you show a larger pump. Do you still recommend a sand filter with glass beads?`Curious for what has worked for you. Thank you for all your amazing tips!

    • @MakerGray
      @MakerGray  Před 7 měsíci

      Thank you so much for watching! The smaller pump was just fine but I'm really glad we upgraded to the bigger Waterway pump for the 8' tank. I highly recommend it. Zero issues, it's very powerful and it works so well. I recommend putting it on a timer so it just turns on and off on its own. And yes, we still use the glass media with the sand filter. No issues and crystal clear water! I just do a backwash every once in awhile to clean the glass out. Thanks again! you're really going to enjoy it :)

    • @MakerGray
      @MakerGray  Před 11 měsíci

      Thank you! I really like deck construction so I just pay a lot of attention. Then I was able to figure out a safe and sturdy build to fit our needs :) The straight edge is a track for a track saw, which is just like a circular saw but made to ride a long the track. It's such a great tool. I have it linked in the description of my video for you. Thanks again!

    Hello, I just bought your plans. What did you do to square the deck?

    Really awesome and accessible tutorial! We have this same stocktank setup and are thinking of following your design. I may have missed this in the video or comments, but what width are your 5/4" deck boards? 6"?

      @MakerGray  Před 11 měsíci +1

      Yep! 6" wide. Thanks so much! I appreciate it!

      Not yet! But I'd like to. I built an outdoor shower next to the pool and I'd love to figure out a way to heat both. Thanks so much for the kind words and I'll keep that in mind! :)

    This is a great instruction video but if I wanted the deck higher will I need additional support

    • @MakerGray
      @MakerGray  Před rokem

      I'm not positive of what your deck will be, but if you are going a little higher, you can just extend the height of the vertical posts

    Awesome vid! Which pool filter did you switch to? Did the Intex sand filter not do the job? I'm waiting on my 10ft stock tank to arrive but unsure which filter to go with.

    • @MakerGray
      @MakerGray  Před 2 lety +2

      I got a Waterway TWM-30s and it's awesome. I've heard it's the best. The Intex worked well but the particular size I had was too small for the 8' pool upgrade I installed. I think a bigger Intex (than what I had) would do the job just fine. Thanks for watching!

    Fantastic! Only thing I’d suggest is flashing the tops of your joists. Other than that perfect build process.

      I agree. I learned about that after the build and wished I would have. Thanks so much!

    You make it seem so easy, I have a 18x48 round pool, I'm want to build a deck for my pool. But I'm not very crafty.

    • @MakerGray
      @MakerGray  Před 2 lety

      You can do it! Yours will just be a bigger scale.

    This is great! How long did it take you from start to finish to build the deck? Can this be a one day project?

      Thanks! This build took me a few days (we had rain delays). I'd say it's probably a full weekend project.

    did you upgrade to a bigger pump because the one listed in the pool video was insufficient for an 8' pool? Did you already have an outlet for the pump nearby or did you install conduit underground to run wiring to your electrical source. Thank you for the great videos.

    • @MakerGray
      @MakerGray  Před rokem +1

      The previous pump would have worked but this pump is much better for this size. It's actually bigger than necessary. We do not have an outlet nearby so I run a heavy duty exterior extension cord. However, I plan to install an exterior outlet nearby this coming season. Thank you for watching!
