for sure... Propagandhi is so difficult to request, literally dozens upon dozens of songs that are beyond words, I don't even know where to begin. I don't want to turn them instantly off to propagandhi b/c of certain song themes ( you know what i mean) but as far as a band that stirs the neurons in your brains, its hard to touch Prop, and they have been cranking out bangers since the early 90's. most respected band to me without a doubt.

This song was written and sung by Todd Kowalski, the band's bass guitarist. If I'm not mistaken, it's about the death of his father.

Yep, dunno where the drug angle is coming from, but I guess it could be seen that way. Looks like my old man if he ever gets sick would tell me and my brother and would not ask for help, too prideful. The kind of dad that never wants you to do anything when you visit them, they wanna cook, they wanna repair your car, they give you money, even if you have a job and are doing well for yourself, but don't you dare ask them too much about their own shit...

Nigredo means putrefaction or decomposition. (the blackening.) It became a metaphor for the dark night of the soul, when an individual confronts the shadow within. At first, individuals are unaware. They exist in an objective state, visable from the OUTSIDE only. (People realize someone has a drug problem even before that person with the problem realizes they have a problem.) Second, is the process of individuation becomes aware of their shadow aspects. Their moment of maximum despair. Which is the prerequisite to personal development. (you always here drug addicts who are lucky enough to turn their lives around about 'hitting rock bottom' and getting the reality check they needed, the slap in the face that woke them up to make them realize they are in too deep.) The individual confronts their darkest time but their ego defends itself from improvement and there seems to be a balance in the struggle with no way forward. The ever deepening descent into the unconscious suddenly gives way to illumination from above (albedo, the whiteness.)
This song is about being on a path of destruction, one that you are first unaware that is even happening.. specifically in this song; substance abuse and drug addiction. It talks about throwing caution to the wind and not thinking about consequences and flirting with addiction. Sometimes you get in way too deep, and there is no hope for you to 'rise from the ashes.' Your choices left you clambering and scratching at those around you for help but they too can be suffering from their own problems they need to deal with and don't have the time to help you and everyone else. You're plunged into the ever increasing darkness, you always have excuses to not help yourself, or "maybe tomorrow" you'll change, you keep putting it off until it is too late. You've entered "Nigredo's endless night." You drift further away, even at your point of total despair, you can't find your way. Some people say fuck it and continue on the self-destruction path, after all that was their 'fate.' They no longer are in control of their own lives and funnel themselves into the "squeezing hands of fate." Some will get lucky and pull it off and survive but at the cost of losing everything and everyone else around them. More so you will keep on withering away and become another statistic. It is too late, you're in too deep to get back your life, they are in an endless sea struggling for air before going under forever. You're in control of your own fate. You don't get a do-over. This is your life, it is yours to ruin. Be careful. You're not special you can't game the system, learn from the misery of others. Once you're gone, your life can't be replaced.

This is one of the greatest Propagandhi songs. For background, the singer who wrote this song is actually completely sober. The song is about his father who passed away from I believe complications related to his lifelong alcoholism shortly before this album was released

They're Canadian, from Winnipeg. You wonder why it's familiar? Their first album is from 1993, lol....you might not know you reacted to them from a song off a 2009 record before, this is Todd on vocals, the bassist, he always has about 1/4 to 1/3 of the songs on their records, Dear Coach's Corner is sang by their main guitarist and usual singer Chris.

Knowing you guys are Christian Id be interested in watching your reaction to anything from David Bazans "Curse your Branches" album, DB having been the lead singer/songwriter in Pedro the Lion, a christian rock band. He had a crisis of faith and wrote"Curse your Branches" which is not only brilliant, but has been called his break up letter to god. Very deep themes and just amazing. Id love to see you react to one.

Good song! I've never heard your god's voice. Your god has never made an effort to make his presence known to me. My God has. I'm not going go into religion, but the way you feel about your god is the same way I feel about mine. Anyway, for about 10 years of my life, I'd drink and take whatever drug I could get my hands on. I used to love blacking out and not being able to remember what I did, or where I woke up. I'd stay black-out high for weeks at a time sometimes. Yes, I always did it in hopes that I wouldn't wake up. I was never an addict, though, thank my Lord. Then I just stopped one day, and it's been almost 20 years since I've done that. I still think about it though. I didn't stop because I all of a sudden started loving life; I stopped because, like you guys said, there are people that love me more than I love myself. I still drink sometimes, not very often though. Maybe once or twice a month. And I'm not that old either, I don't think, lol! I'm in my 30's. I was one of the 'lucky' ones who started early.

Never heard their god's voice either. They should listen to Bad Religion - God's Love 🤣 . I did hear a lot of my own inner voice tell me not to do bad things like steal quarters from my mom's purse when a kid to go play at the arcade, and when I did it, that voice made me feel really awful. But that's called your consciousness, some people need "a god" because they lack one maybe?

Burden of Proof/Reign is the best one to recommend these 2 🤣 . Terrible politics from the guy usually, but at least they're open minded, going from Slayer to melodic hardcore punk and to Propagandhi's now very defined progressive metal/punk/hardcore....lol whatever, it's Propagandhi, they can't be classified anymore.
The original demo version of Dividers is much better if you ever heard it, the Blaze It Demo. I'd be interested in their take of a lot of Trashed songs...."Island of Shame", "Rust", "No One", there's no point in analyzing their silly songs like Lazy or Sleep tho heh.

Murder, suicide, overdose, the sheer number of people I have lost, it's literally to the point where my phone actually ringing is a PTSD trigger, because if someone it's just saying hi, they usually text. The phone only rings for two reasons, either a spam/scam call or another avoidable, preventable, unnecessary premature death. 20s. 30s. One kid didn't even make it out of his teens.
It's impossible to hear this song and not break all the way down. It's a beautiful song, incredibly real, emotionally razor sharp, horribly painful. It came out a little bit after I had 13 funerals in 12 months to attend, including watching my dad die and finding my sister on the kitchen floor, and also just before I lost the drummer of my band. When it rains, it pours.
I identified with the song so much, I talked about it with my therapist about it. He suggested that we listen to it during a session. I was the last appointment of the night, and he wound up staying an hour late.
We need to take steps, not only to make recovery more accessible, provide for options outside the traditional 12-step model, fund programs in general, but also, drug prohibition is destructive.
People think they're heroin addicts, but they might just be doing fent. The people making and selling that shit are NOT professionals. Sometimes they'll put this powdered morphine stuff in it to make it brown, so so it doesn't turn green when you put water on it. Sometimes they don't even bother. Fent is not only unusually potent, very small, so it's easy to accidentally put in WAY too much if you don't know what you're doing, but it also can't give you the same high as heroin, so if you think you have heroin but it's actually fent, you might think you need to do a little more when you really can't even take any more. Lots of people overdose that way.
When I was 19, I lost use of my left hand for like 4 months because some tar was either contaminated or deliberately cut with botulinum toxin (in small doses it works as a muscle relaxant, so sometimes they put some in dope, but if you miss a little and it gets in a muscle, that muscle atrophies for a while, sometimes forever). I'm a lifelong guitarist, so losing my arm was horrifying. I almost shot myself, I didn't think it was gonna heal.
These are just a couple examples. When alcohol was prohibited, there were similar issues. Price goes up, quality goes down, purity or strength is unreliable, you have no idea what you're drinking. Alcoholics would do B&Es and stick-ups to afford their alcohol. People died from drinking SD alcohol or turpentine or trying to get drunk off wood alcohol.
These are issues that you have when the black market has an absolute monopoly on a substance that is addictive. Not to mention, lots of people wind up locked up simply for having a little bit of coke or dope for their own use. In my state, connecticut, possession of either, in ANY amount, is a felony. You get caught with one $10 bag of dope, you face a maximum of 5 years. One bag, 5 years. We have to stop that. It's barbaric. It's cruel. It's wrong. It doesn't work. Or rather, it doesn't work to serve its *stated* purpose... The drug war is racist and classist and absolutely unjustifiable beyond a shadow of a doubt.
Please take care of yourselves, and please please please please please please, I am literally begging you, please don't give up on your loved ones, *especially* if they are struggling with addiction. I know it can get hard, but once they've lost everyone? Really is a death sentence.
If you read this far, thanks for hearing me out, people who muster up the strength to continue to care are the reason I'm still alive. It's a short list, but my god, the ones I got. Absolute treasure.
    Love and solidarity,
    Adam
