    One funny thing about PS1 High Stakes is how broken the gearing is for most cars. With the Ferrari 550 for example, for optimal acceleration, you need to go straight from 3rd gear to 6th gear, skipping 4th and 5th gear entirely. Someone made a really detailed spreadsheet showing the optimal time to gear up for each car in the game (while factoring in upgrades as well) and which gears to skip. Definitely goes a level beyond any of Gran Turismo's gear trick shenanigans 🦄

    I recently played NFSIV so I know all of the combos for the lights.
    How to turn on lights
    L1+Up=Turn on/off headlights
    L1+Left=Turn on/off left blinker
    L1+Right=Turn on/off right blinker
    L1+Down=Turn on/off Hazard lights
    Up= Horn(during day)/Turn on/off high beam(during night)
    Few notes.
    The cars to choose are as follows
    BMW Z3 as once you complete the open roadster challenge, you have the weekend racing challenge
    An event for a fully tuned Z3
    If you had the Australian version of the game, you should get the HSV GTS was the next car as you then have the HSV Pro Cup
    If you had the US version of the game, getting the Corvette while slower in tournament mode, was the car needed in special events
    If you had the Japanese version of the game, getting the R34 was the car you wanted as you had the R34 cup
    The last car you wanted to get was the 911 as you had the 911 Pro Cup in special events.
    ----------------------------------------------
    The AI at times drove like they had a rocket up their ass in the later events
    I would have a fully upgraded car in tournament mode and all of a sudden the AI would just scream past me, then slam the brakes and drive in their slow usual manner.

    • @YellowbirdYT
      @YellowbirdYT  Před 5 měsíci +1

      By the later stages, AI is quite competitive. There's no room for mistakes whatsoever.

      @@YellowbirdYT I dont mind competitive but having them scream past me when I am fully tuned and they're not is annoying.
      Its similar to rubber banding which does exist.
      The AI would not be more than 300m behind me in the later stages even when i was fully upgraded.

    The PC version also included the tracks from NFSIII as well as new career mode stages to race them in, it also has a massive modding scene making all new cars and tracks to race around in with support for up to 50 new cars (really 47 before bugs start cropping up). It also halves the skidpad rating of the cars to make them more slidey, and has no concept of rev-matching... no idea how they broke that, it wasn't a problem in 3.

    Looking back I am so thankful that I grew up with both High Stakes and Underground 2. They’re almost like two different sides of the same coin and both do a great job of representing two different aspects of car culture of the time. In a way I really wish that we got more games like High Stakes nowadays. No open world, no crazy car customization, no corny story. Just driving cool cars in exotic locations with an enjoyable handling model

Technically, this wasn't my first Need for Speed game (that honor goes to NFS3 since its monstrous intro is forever ingrained into my mind), but NFS4 will forever be The Best NFS of all time, period. The visuals, the levels, the soundtrack, oh my God the CARS (THE DIABLO!!!!!!1111), the career mode, everything is perfect here.

    I live in the part of Canada where the first need for speed was developed. A lot of those clips are clearly from the mountains around here and you can even see the license plates in clips like that green 911 clip you used.
    I recently reacquired my dads old 3DO and his copy of the og NFS. I still remember my friends coming over and seeing him playing it on a rear projection big screen and having their mind blown.
    I believe the physics were toned down a bit in the later PSX re-release that added things like in race music and the circuits. The original 3DO release only had the point to point segment races. And the Pacific section is heavily inspired by Western Canada.
    As a kid I think I mainly used the cheats to drive the traffic cars in NFS2 or would go to the france circuit and ram into the 2CVs at top speed and fling them down the track.

    I look back with very good memories on growing up playing Hot Pursuit 3 and High Stakes because I was 5 years old, and a 5 year old like me would just pick the Ferrari on arcade mode and try to drive it backwards seeing if I could get it to 100mph, crash it, laugh then turn the PlayStation off and that was considered a perfect game to me.
    Sadly, the only good thing about HP3 and HS was the killer soundtrack and UI aesthetics, because the physics are absolutely terrible. I tried to play HS several times and straight up gave up on it because it was ridiculous. Braking sucks, steering sucks, physics sucks and the AI especially sucks.
    But I’d be lying if I said HS is still a favorite to go back and play a race or two for fun with all expectations of proper control over the car thrown out the window.

      I wouldn't say the black box era of NFS games are considered in the "bad" category, but the down-right rapid fans who can't never accept *ANY* criticism to any of their beloved games and say petty ass insults for the ones who are giving out criticism even if it's valid. It's just as bad as the Sonic the Hedgehog fan base with the exact same problem of having different eras of Sonic games and which works the best to "bring it back" while never playing any of the newer games at all and just go by OTHERS reviews.
      Most of these people are over 20 years old but still have a mindset of 13 year olds thinking the mid-2000 edge phase is still cool. This is a mental warzone!

    Need for Speed was realms away of Granny Turismo! Granny Turismo gave you tons of boring cars and an understeery confined-to-a-track follow-the-rules driving experience; Need for Speed gave you the best-of-the-best exotics mostly with no less than 8 cylinders, a soundtrack to die for and, if there were any rules (see cops), you were encouraged to break them to win! Also the PC version let you download and mod cars and the tracks and given you were basically down at the wire mesh doing the editing, it's fair to say it was more moddable than Underground and anything since.
    In terms of racing sims, a far better one than Granny Turismo from around the same time was Electronic Arts' GT Sports Car. It had the Vector M12 and Callaway C12 and both had a nicer shape than their real-life counterparts! The soundtrack wasn't quite on the level of the Need for Speeds but you could still hear a bit of that vibe. I loved gearing and tuning the M12 up to race against the class above it; not to mention the chaos that would ensue if pushed an AI car out of the pits while it was stopped and into the middle of the track for others to hit - rinse and repeat on a race with 99 laps until you have a start/finish line full of revving cars that aren't going anywhere except out-of-fuel!

  • @nerdius8204

    God, I hate how biased due to nostalgia most people are who only played the PC Version of High stakes. The physics are better in the psx version. It actually feels like that the cars have weight to them. In the pc version the cars have a strange center pivot.
    Also the car models in the pc version are horrible and the presentation and UI is so bland compared to the psx version.
    And this a debateable point: the psx version "looks" better.
    What makes a game look good arent graphic fidelity like higher resolution . Its more about the art direction and making the best of the limitations from the hardware in which the psx version excels at.
    The pc version might have the higher resolution but this makes it more apparent how low res the textures and how ugly the car models are.
    The cars of the psx version might have the lower polycount, but those models look somehow so much better. (Even emblems are visible and unlike the pc version, the driver actually have a animation when he's steering) What the PC actually does better is the career mode and the bigger mode selection in general, also the damage is more in depth.

    • @haaxxx9
      @haaxxx9 Před 5 měsíci +2

      That is strange because I always hear the opposite about the PC port of HS is the inferior version of HS compared to the PSX version of it. At this point nobody is going to come down your house and put a shotgun right on your head for a video game preference. I only played the PC version because of modern patches and it supports racing wheels (FFB included!). Regardless of different versions, HS is one of the most fun I had in racing games more so than most modern racing games as today!

      I've played both quite a bit over the years and I agree with you.

      @sebastianaliandkulche Před 5 měsíci +2

      We could discuss this all day, but even if they did everything else right, things like the low framerate, rubberbanded AI or resolution could really ruin anyone first experience. Gran Turismo 2 looked and run better so there was no excuse for that framerate.

      Gt2 might have a stable framerate of 20 to 25 fps but its not uncommon that objects suddenly pop up which is not the case in high stakes.
