    I loved this video! I'm currently a junior in undergrad hoping to pursue speech pathology in grad school, and I LOVE that you're a bilingual SLP! That's what I'm super interested in doing and I would love to see/hear more about your experience doing therapy in both in English and Spanish! Like the differences in how it's done, and what your schooling looked like for it! Also, love that you're Latina like me, I don't see many at all in my program so as cheesy as it sounds this was super comforting/inspiring for me :)

    • @MariellaMendez
      @MariellaMendez  Před 4 lety +1

      Yes there was not many Latinas in the program. My program was not bilingual so it based its evidence practice for monolingual. Language Therapy in Spanish is provided the same. However Articulation is different. Sounds are developed at a different rate.

    Hey there! I am an aspiring speech pathologist. Hopefully getting into grad school soon. Wanted to know if you have a bilingual certification? Also how do you get to practice bilingual speech pathology? I am a native Spanish speaker and I majored in Spanish in college. I live in Texas so I would really like to practice bilingually as there is a need. Any tips! Thanks so much!

      Hi! In the state which I practice in, Florida, a specialization is not required to be a bilingual SLP.

      I am considered a bilingual SLP in Florida due to my ability to treat and evaluation in both languages, read and write in both and translate to caregivers.

    Hi I enjoyed your video.what do you recommend on majoring in to become a speech language pathologist ? I am currently studying Spanish and literature but I’m not sure if I want to teach. I would like to shift into the medical field.

      Hi Jessica. It is recommended you obtain an undergrad degree in communication science disorders. And then you have to achieve a masters in speech language pathology.

      Jessica Villegas Hi Jessica! Sorry if I’m a little late, but I majored in English literature in my undergrad and was able to do my masters in Communication Science and Disorders. You could probably benefit from your background & language background!

    I’m really struggling on what route to go to for my major, and I really enjoyed you doing this video also because many people don’t record. But I was wondering if I were to just get my bachelors would I still be able to maintain this job?

      hey! i've been considering the same thing, because I'm not really looking to go to grad school so I plan to just get a bachelors in lingustics. I found out that with only a bachelors you actually can still do speech therapy, you just cannot be classifies as a speech pathologist. Then if later down the line you want to get your masters degree - even just online - you can, but you can be working in speech therapy at the same time :)
