    I know you posted this two years ago but I just found it and it has been so helpful. About to start working as an SLPA, but didn’t get into grad school. I was so devastated, but this has really changed my outlook. This sounds up my alley! Thank you so much for posting this.

    Hi Karina! I’ve only watched a few of your videos and am already hooked because of the great info and ideas you give 🤩 I’m a mom of a four year old and recently became licensed as an SLPA after graduating with my BS in speech language pathology and audiology. I became an RBT and then transitioned to an SLPA in a home health setting. I actually REALLY love being hands on with the kiddos as an RBT and now an SLPA.
    I agree that the paperwork is a big turn off for becoming an SLP. Another con I would suggest is when you’re going house to house (of course depending on the job), your income could fluctuate if you’re being paid per visit and patients cancel or you have to miss a visit-resulting in not getting paid for that missed one. It’s a risky factor if someone is looking for something more consistent or guaranteed.
    Again, I love that I finally found someone I can relate to as you’re a bilingual SLPA mom! 👏🏼👏🏼 you’re a rockstar and I’ll continue watching your videos! Thanks so much for the content, it’s really helping this mama out 🙌🏼

      🥺 You are so sweet, thank you!
      There was a time that I was very interested in RBT as well. No doubt you're doing what you love!
      Thanks for that addition, too! It’s true that it really varies on the benefits of the job, and I see lots of home health openings year-round for those looking to be an SLPA.
      I haven’t come across too many mommas that are also an SLPA, so it’s exciting to know that I'm attracting + helping out that audience as well

      @@KarinaKurlz likewise! A lot of SLPAs are usually still on their journey to becoming an SLP and so they haven’t had kids yet. Which is why I was so excited to find your channel 🤩
      I feel like my experience becoming as an RBT before becoming an SLPA has really benefited me. It really expands your knowledge on positive reinforcement and redirection, things we use already in the field, but on a higher level and with much more content and strategies. Alot of my coworkers as an SLPA freeze when their kiddo has a behavior and they don’t know what to do. I’m fortunate to have the experience to kind of know what to expect as I’ve seen the behaviors before or even on a more extreme level and can de-escalate the situation efficiently to be able to go right back into therapy as we only have so much time, like you mentioned in the video. I feel like we should have some sort of training if not in school, then as a licensed SLP(A). Kind of how we get trained in CPR. I feel it would only be safer for the kiddos and us therapists if we knew how to handle those tough and sometimes dangerous situations.

    I’m thinking about becoming an slpa. I am passionate about helping kids with speech and helping them become more confident in themselves. I’m considering grad school for slp, I graduate in spring 23 with a bachelors in math and minor in communication disorders, but honestly school is very stressful and I don’t like college, it’s expensive and time consuming and I feel like grad school is not what I want to do because I have zero interest in swallowing disorders or the hospital setting of slp. If you don’t mind me asking, can you make a decent income working as an slpa? I see a lot of varying salaries when I search it online. I’m not sure what is accurate. And do you ever wish you were an slp instead of an slpa? Thank you!! I love you and your videos! ❤️

      Hi! You can! I can afford a home in Texas and live comfortably working as an SLPA. It all depends on the setting and it varies across different states, of course.
      I do sometimes wish I was an SLP strictly for the higher pay, but I’m comfortable doing what I do- the direct therapy/ working with students.
      I’m glad I can help someone, and I appreciate you watching! :)

      Hey ladies. This is a great topic! I’m an SLP but was an SLPA for 4 years before graduate school. In my experience, the other reasons that you may want to consider becoming an SLP are to be able to evaluate kiddos (which I find very interesting but not everyone does) and to have the option to work in different settings. I haven’t seen many positions for SLPAs in outpatient clinics (pediatric or adult), hospitals, or HomeCare. If you ever want to open your own clinic you probably want/need your CCCs as well. In my experience SLPAs tend to be limited to the school setting but if that’s where you want to be then it’s great. You also avoid all of the paperwork that SLPs do which is a plus for an SLPA. Thanks!

    Hi Karina, I really enjoyed your video. I'm about to start my clinical hours as an slpa. I'm so nervous! I feel like my brain did a data dump and forgot some of what I learned. Is there anything you recommend I touch up on?

    • @KarinaKurlz
      @KarinaKurlz  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi! I think you’ll be just fine! You’ll have time to observe while you’re also participating in the sessions/activities, so you’ll pick it back up real quick. It’ll all come naturally!
      If absolutely needed though, maybe read into child development of language or adults! Depending on where you’re doing the clinical hours

    Hi Karina! Im currently waiting for licensure in California, but in your video you mentioned goals are given to you by SLP. Im really confused on this part, do SLPAs write goals?

    • @KarinaKurlz
      @KarinaKurlz  Před 10 měsíci +1

      Awesome! SLPAs do not write goals. Because we don’t evaluate the client/student, we cannot write any goals. The SLP will create the goals for the client/student based off of what they saw in their evaluation, and then those goals are sent to the SLPA to implement in therapy. I hope this helps!

    Thank you for your insight! If your supervisor SLP is on vacation or sick do you still get to work? Can you even contact them during those times? Some people have a primary and secondary supervisor can you explain the difference, please?

    • @KarinaKurlz
      @KarinaKurlz  Před rokem +2

      Yes, I still work if the SLP is away for any reason! I usually don’t contact the SLP during that time, but it would be a personal preference if you can/cannot reach out. I’m not quite sure what primary and secondary supervisors would be, but I would imagine it’s the SLP and then the supervisor who is in charge of the SLP? Not too sure about that!

    hello, I'm a student who wants to make a speech-to-text device for children who have speech delays, can you spare a minute to share your thoughts about it? and if it is needed by SLP's and why. thank you so much for your time

    • @KarinaKurlz
      @KarinaKurlz  Před 2 lety +1

      Hi! Yes, it’s definitely needed for SLPs and SLPAs because we work with all children and adults with communication challenges. I don’t have too much experience working with those devices, but I know both SLP and SLPAs for sure do come across them at some point in their career.

      The SLP sets up a meeting with a representative from the AAC company and coordinates a meeting time. Then they work together to create and compile the best AAC for the student.

      An SLP can work from home via teletherapy. I have no idea if an SLPA can work remotely
