    This video is very inspirational. I'm currently an undergrad close to completing my degree and I too have a GPA that's a little below 3.0. I switched majors during my sophomore year to speech path and have failed and retaken courses, delaying me from graduating in 2022. I'll be done in spring 2024 and with everything that happened during undergrad, I have been questioning lately if I even wanted to attend grad school and began researching how work would be as an SLPA. Turns out it's not as bad as I thought. So I definitely understand the GPA thing and now I'll still be happy if I go to grad school or not, just gotta wait and see how my GPA turns out. Thanks for sharing this!

    I’m super excited and scared, I’m still in my program but have an interview this Friday for entry level SLPA. I’m hoping I get the position while I’m still in school because I just feel like it would definitely benefit me so much. Also it will help me to decide whether or not I want to pursue a Masters. I’m a single mother and I do not want to take time away from my teen.

    Hello thank you for these videos! I have years of working as a paraprofessional and a resource aid, so I know a bit of I.E.P's and working with sped, I'm really considering returning back to school for a slpa.

    When you work for a school what are your typical hours? Like if I needed to leave an hour before school ends is that possible?

    Hi I’m deciding between occupational therapy assistant and speech language pathology assistant which one would pay more for northern and Southern California and would I be able to live comfortably and which one is faster to finish schooling

      Hi! I haven’t looked into much details for an OTA, but I know of people that have completed the coursework and I believe it’s about the same as an SLPA, which is about 2 years worth of coursework. I’m also not familiar with the license requirements in California, but for Texas, there isn’t many universities that offer a degree specifically for OTA like they offer for SLPAs. OTAs typically complete their coursework at community colleges, which may be faster!

      If I could go back, I would do OTA if you’re not interested in going for your masters. You can work at the hospital, SNF, Home health and at clinics as an OTA. The OTA I work with is a COTA and she gets $30/hr in Orlando, Fl just out of school.

    I just started a job as an SLPA under a travel contract. It’s similar to travel nursing and the stipends are really generous. I plan to work through a grad program because I’m older and can’t afford to not work.

    Loved your video! I originally wanted to be a teacher and I got my BA in Liberal Studies but I'm transitioning out of that now and I am wondering if I would have to get another BA in speech pathology?

    • @KarinaKurlz
      @KarinaKurlz  Před rokem +2

      You don’t have to! There are programs that offer only the speech-related courses to avoid you having to complete an entire other degree.

    For the graduate programs, do they really require a minimum gpa of 3.0 or do they want higher? Mine is currently a 3.3 and I'm a little worried about not getting into graduate school.

    May you try recording the action of your working learn spl on the children?

  • @angie111598
    @angie111598 Před 2 lety +1

    So for the slap. Does the SLP create the treatment plan and tell you what you need to work on in your therapy sessions or do you create your own therapy for the child? Like do u pick what intervention to use for each child? Or do u just follow what the SLP says to do in therapy?

    • @KarinaKurlz
      @KarinaKurlz  Před 2 lety +5

      I believe it depends on the SLP that is supervising you, because everyone has their own style, but my experience has been creating the games/therapy materials on my own!

    • @amirastephens4362
      @amirastephens4362 Před rokem +1

      Hello there, fellow SLPA in the school board here! Unfortunately we don’t get to choose which schools/how many we’re assigned to. I was recently assigned to three schools as well (2 middle/1 high) and that’s given I also have years of experience in childcare and I am certified for early childhood education. Similar to what Karina says, it is based on your experience but also where the district feels you will flourish more.

    • @KarinaKurlz
      @KarinaKurlz  Před 2 lety

      I believe so! I was luckily able to complete mine after I graduated, still with UT Austin, but it isn’t offered at too many places. It’s the most difficult part of the process to get a license! You got it! ✨

    I have a question, why don't you take a lunch break and what do you eat in those 5 min? how do you get energy to keep on working? Can you do a what I eat in a day as a SLPA? that would be great! Adiós!!

    • @KarinaKurlz
      @KarinaKurlz  Před 2 lety +2

      That’s a great idea, I’ll definitely do that next!
      I don’t take a lunch break because I see about 30 kids each day, and that’s broken up into both individual and group sessions. I could easily move some students around to allow a 30 minute break, and I sometimes do! However, I find myself always working in those breaks so that I don’t take any work home. Fridays are the days I like to treat myself to a lunch out :)

    In NY State you can get hired as a speech therapist in the schools or BOCES with a BA at the same salary as the SLP earns. You will need a Masters degree in a related area, and a UDO to sign your Medicaid. Get into the habit of taking a lunch, out your will burn out.
