DAY IN THE LIFE OF A DOCTOR: Dietitian and Speech Pathologist
VloĆŸit
- Äas pĆidĂĄn 25. 06. 2024
- Join me for a day in the life of a doctor where I'm learning from a dietitian and speech pathologist. I'll be joining them to assess a patient with a new stroke.
I had so much fun trying thickened fluids, barium swallow and supplements!
1:20 Meet Christina, the speech and language pathologist
5:16 Video swallow testing!
9:35 Meet Alisha, the dietitian
10:50 Trying supplements!
đ Did you know that 45% of people admitted to hospital are malnourished? It's a real concern, which is why these types of supplements are so crucial.
đ HUGE thank you to Christina and Alisha for participating in the video.

Love how you show us different specialist you work with!!
Really glad to hear that Eva - had a lot of fun with this one!
@@ViolinMD Hello plz reply i wanna to become doctor i am in complete secondry school
Yes, they should make the 1st or 2nd years students work with different specialist to have a better understand about the food and process goes into the medicine.
@@scottsmit1115 yes
@@ViolinMD Im not sure whether or not I want to go to med school. I was thinking to either become a doctor or a physician assistant. Can you tell me good reasons why someone should become a doctor? In fact, can you please tell me why you became a doctor?
As a speech language pathologist working at a hospital, Itâs refreshing to hear a MD says to âlearnâ from us because we certainly donât see a lot of doctors do that đđ you are the best
Dietitian here! Thank you for letting your
Followers see how teamwork is essential for great patient outcomes!
You should follow an Occupational Therapist & then a Physical Therapist around for a day too!!
I was a rehab aide working along side PTs and OTs.. they are truly heros. She should definitely shadow them
@@meganotoole3079 That is awesome! I am currently a 2nd year student in Occupational Therapy school, about to start my clinical rotations. That is what sparked my suggestion of her shadowing OT because swallowing and feeding is within our scope of practice too!
Iâm a pre-ot student and was definitely just thinking this! Thereâs so much to healthcare that goes beyond nursing or being a or doctor that not too many people know about or have misconceptions (esp getting mixed up with PTs). When I learned about OT I got teary eyed bc I found my dream career. Iâm starting my observation soon for hand therapy and Iâm so excited!
@@katiemcmurray1607 wow i am pre medical student loce medical field just for the help of poor peoples here in my country.
From pakistan
Iâve been working as an OTR for 4 years :)
Itâs cool seeing what a speech pathologist and dietician does in the hospital đđ
hey my name is LANEY I AM 24 YEARS OLD WHAT KIND OF PAGER DO YOU HAVE
I get so excited when I see that notification đâ€ïž

that's awesome to hear!! thank you guys!

OMG thank you for including dietitians! Also thanks for explaining how Dietitians and Nutritionists are different! The majority of the public don't really understand that part. It would have been really cool to see the dietitian perform the NFPE (Nutrition Focused Physical Exam) to see how she came to the conclusion that the patient was malnourished but overall it was great!
You will be an amazing medical leader. The respect you show to the whole health care team is outstanding. And you take the position and control of a leader and listen to the others on the team. A true role model for any aspiring doctor - not just young women.
Now that I just watched the video... I have NEVER thought about the swallowing process. It just happens so naturally! I have learned so much from this video and all your other vlogs. It is very interesting to meet new doctors and learn about their work. I am mostly impressed how you make me conscious about my body and my health. Thank you for that!
As someone who's had a stroke, unfortunately all natural things can become huge mountains to climb every time :( You learn to cope, but it never becomes natural again.
As an SLP Iâm so happy you made this video! People have so many misconceptions about what we do and why we do certain things, especially MBS (videoflouros). I love how you showed a clip for people to see the swallow in action! I love my job and the medical side of this field. Hopefully she doesnât need a PEG tube and can rehab her swallow!
Iâm studying to be an SLP now, and already Iâve encountered so many misconceptions. A lot of my family and friends think Iâm going to be a teacher or only work on articulation. Thereâs so much more involved!
Blueblueberry keep on educating!!
Iâm studying to be an SLP right now, also! Itâs been amazing to see the many different paths you can take in the profession âșïž
Nicole Holman totally! Make sure you get a variety of Externships while youâre in grad school. Fight for them!
jessica nicholson I will!! Thank you so much for the advice! âșïž
As a SLP who has been working in the field for almost 25 years, I appreciate you creating this video on so many levels! I am positive that I will be sharing this video with patients and families that have dysphagia! Wonderful job!
As an SLP in the medical setting, I so appreciate this video!!! So many people have no clue what we do! Thank you for shedding light on dysphagia! Itâs such a common problem that so few know about.
The throat image/x Ray was sooo cool
Chriscolum OMG đ€Ł
Love when coworkers participate. Shows support for what you all are doing, helping others. Thank you for these videos đ
Iâm currently in my Masterâs program for Speech-Language Pathology! Love watching the collaboration between you, the SLP, and the dietician! Teamwork makes the dream work!
Siobhan is hot.
True about team work
Thank you for shining light on what Dietitians actually do! I am in my clinical rotations now pursuing a career as a Crititcal Care RDN working in a clinical setting! Dietitians are licensed physicians and it was great to see us get the recognition we feel we deserve!
I am a speech pathologist and I love that you show how our professions work together!
Great. I am also pre medical student wanna to become doctor. To help poors.
You speech pathologist nice. What would be procedure if a child can't speak well problem in speaking then.
I am an Occupational Therapist. Have you considered doing a vlog with an OT and PT? Really love that you include other allied health professionals in your vlogs!!
Amanda Moores would love this as well as Iâm studying OT at uni!
Not many want to be on yt,
When I think SLP I think helping young children who struggle with speech in a school setting. It was nice too see an SLP's scope in the medical setting.
This is my favorite video of yours! I am an SLP who just got into PA school. It makes me so happy seeing other providers go out of their way to understand what SLPs do and respect their skills :)
hi! :) If you donât mind me asking what made you switch? Iâm actually in between those two careers right now haha
When I had a stroke I was lucky enough that I was already in the ICU so I recieved the care I needed right away. Thank you for these inspirational videos đ
Hope your recovery was smooth and you are doing well! Have a great day!
As a current dietetics student I really appreciated the caption about the difference between registered dietitians and nutritionalists! I also love how much respect you show each health professional!
I am an SLP and I absolutely LOVE that you filmed this and are bringing awareness to the field!! I also really appreciate that you highlighted that as a doctor you can still learn from consulting with an SLP or other professional!!
Thank you so much for stating that nutritionist and dietitians arenât the same! Iâm currently studying to become an RDN
The arguments Iâve seen on here disputing this.
Yes, it's a good distinction to make. However, nutritionists who have had proper education would be trained more so in research which is also important in the progression of science
@@starlightwhispers6781 Actually, a lot of RDs are involved in nutrition research. At my school, all the professors of nutrition are RDs.
@@k10nn10th Yes, that is a possible pathway or they could just be involved in the everyday practical aspect of dietetics
Can't wait for that 3rd year medical resident intro đ
Raul Muñoz sameeee
And now itâs happened
I love that you highlight different interdisciplinary roles in your videos and donât just focus on physicians or even nurses. I think itâs super informative! Youâre doing a wonderful job of educating others regarding the medical field đ
Iâm a speech pathologist in the school setting! Itâs so exciting to see someone who is interested in our career. A lot of people think we just work with children who canât speak correctly. We do SO much more than that! Thank you for taking the time to educate people about our field. â€ïž
I LOVE this! As a nursing major, we often talk about the different roles in a hospital setting, but itâs refreshing to actually SEE what is being done for the patient behind the scenes. I love the display of teamwork! This is what healthcare should be like all the time!
Totally agree.
I work as a dietary aid in a nursing home and I'm so glad you're getting to see "our" side of things. We honestly have a hard job. Making sure everyone's liquids and foods are the right thickening and consistancy.
Lovely video Siobhan! Iâm a UK dietitian and I think itâs great to see doctors taking an active interest in our profession, as well as our clinical role being promoted to a wider audience. Keep up the good work! âșïž love from Scotland đŽó §ó ąó łó Łó Žó ż
Thank you so much for the clarification between dietitians and nutritionists! As I'm studying to be a dietitian I'm sometimes baffled by the lack of education one needs to call themself a nutritionist. This video was clear, informational, and fun to watch!!
I'm so happy you upload a new video! You inspire me to be a better person and student!
wow thank you so much for that huge compliment!
@@ViolinMD ever thought of being a lpn
I'm an x-ray technologist and I think it's so cool that you covered a modified barium swallow! Those were always interesting to watch when I was a student/working in the hospital. I love that you cover as many elements of healthcare as you can. Thank you so much for everything you do on this channel, on top of your already demanding job!
As a speech-language pathologist, thank you so much for shedding light on our profession â€ïž
Definitely more dietetics videos! I recently changed my major and want to learn more!
LOVED this video! I'm studying to become an SLP at the moment. It was so great to see the field represented in this way, and how much you listened to and seemed to appreciate the SLP's opinion. Thank you!
Occupational Therapist PLEASE! Our title is so ambiguous even doctors are deferring our orders to physical therapists for things out of their scope. Advocate for us!
Jennifer love this đ
Came here to post the same thing!
Did you see the tree branch growing out of chevon's throat at 22:20?
I am in a speech pathology program in Texas and I was ecstatic to see that you had a video interacting with a hospital SLP! Thank you for this!
All too often my professors try and put medical SLP into the best perspective they can but it is so different seeing things instead of hearing about it with clinical experience only!
I love this because it shows how the specialists helped my mom when she had a bad trigeminal Neuralgia attacks that made her not want to eat or drink. She started off with a feeding tube than ending up eating up to advanced minced diet and foods like muffins! Thank you for all that you do for patients!
Okay but siobahn is literally goals. So pretty and sweet, a DOCTOR that had a nontrafitional route but managed to become a DOCTOR DID I SAY DOCTOR??? And her body is goaaalls
TXGA VM and she plays violin :0
She is the entire package for sure!
Siobhan is how it is spelt.
I would love to see you follow around a social worker! They play a different role in the hospital than just medical professionals, so it would be interesting to see
I watch quite a few medical professionals on CZcams, and I gotta say youâre my favourite. Youâre very humble, you donât act like some sort of God for being a doctor! I love how you continue to learn, and show us how the hospital depends on the WHOLE team and that you all have an equally important role in how the hospital is run :) keep on kickin ass girl! â€ïžâ€ïžâ€ïž
My grandpa had a stroke two nights ago. His speech was all messed up and refused to go to hospital. My mom is a Doctor so she talked him into it. It was so cool watching all the doctors and nurses and hearing the codes thanks to your videos!
more of the SLP!!! I am super interested in that field!!
Same here
Omg I love that you have such a positive attitude. Happy doctor means happy patient
as a therapist who works on a multidisciplinary team, i just want to say i love your enthusiasm for learning about what other members of the team do & the respect you have for everyones role :) wish more doctors were like you!
I canât thank you enough for making this video! Us dietitians and other ancillary health professions do a lot of important work and itâs so wonderful to be appreciated by our medical colleagues! :)
I love this ! I am actually studying to become a speech pathologist and just felt a sense of pride seeing how rewarding my field is :)
Thank you so much for wanting to learn from other professions! As an SLP myself, I am constantly learning from ENTs, respiratory therapists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, dietitians, teachers, dyslexia specialists, etc. - Because the SLP field is sooo vast, it is hard for people to understand what exactly we do...I feel like we probably don't even know what all we do lol! :)
So true I am a student SLP. My head hurts at what we have to learn đ
GIRL I AM FANGIRLING SO HARD! I'm in my masters program to become an SLP and I love this video so much! Thank you so much for taking the time to work with these professionals and learn about their side of stroke care, especially regarding nutrition and dysphagia. It's a field that so many are unaware of but is SO vital to a patient's recovery. Love it!
I really enjoyed this video! I had no idea how closely doctors worked with speech pathologist and dietitians or how important their jobs are! I would love to see more collaborations like these!!!
I canât wait until Iâm a doctor too:)

Me too!đ
College is hard but you have to give it your best. Don't give up.
Wow i am also.
Me too!!
I love how educational your videos are but fun at the same time.
As a doctor, it was interesting to see what is actually done when we order these investigations.
I'm an SLP. Thanks for this. The hardest part is getting patients to drink thickened liquids when they're appropriate and safest. Love Magic Cups!
I'm a nurse that is addicted to your channel! Seriously, I've only discovered your channel probably like 2 weeks ago and I cannot stop watching your videos. I wish we would be able to work together but I live in the UK, lol. You use little to no makeup but you are so pretty, your soul is beautiful and you have such a bubbly personality, despite being tired or worn out! Your videos always cheer me up. They are so educational and interesting, I really love to see the differences between the two countries and I am simply amazed at how open minded and comfortable people are in front of the camera, it's awesome :D ... In here you are not allowed to film in the hospital, let alone vlog and show someone's face on social media while at work, lol. But I am very happy that you can do that so please, don't stop uploading videos!!! xoxoxo
Yay!!! I love how you actively try and showcase interdisciplinary care on your channel. It's awesome to see :)
I love this video, as a nurse it is so great to see how all these team work to come to a final plan. Addicted to you channel. Thank you for your amazing videos!
Seeing the food going down was awesome! Youâre literally the best doctor on CZcams youâre always learning and showing us new things
This is wonderful! (fellow Speech and Language Therapist in the UK here) Thank you for raising awareness of our role and swallowing deficits x
I am a stroke survivor and I loved hearing how you handled this situation!
Me too! At age 32.
Mine was when I was 8
So inspired by seeing the respect you have for various disciplines needed in the hospital. I am currently in school and my overall goal is to become a registered dietitian. It was amazing to see and I would love to see more with RD's!
Iâm also a clinical dietitian (in the Netherlands) and this video is pretty accurate and relatable. The multidisciplinary consultation is so important in these situations. Itâs nice to see how this works in Canada. A lot of people think that dietitians only treat people who are obese, but itâs so much more than that! In fact, the most patients I treat are malnourished. Treating these patients, who also often have a cormobidity that you have to take into account, is very challenging!
If I ever go to the hospital in Canada, I hope you're my doctor :)
You're sooo well spoken! đđœ Pls. continue to inspire us! âșïž
I'm an SLP and I can't thank you enough for showing our field in this wonderful way!!!!
I love that you stay a student! There is always something new to learn, and I love that you truly enjoy the process. I wish you all the best! đ„°
As an SLP student this was awesome to witness and the scope of practice of an SLP in a hospital setting. Awesome work!
Amazing video Siobhan! So insightful! My mum is a speech pathologist in the school system -itâs interesting to see how different the job can be in a hospital setting.
I'm an SLP undergrad and I'm so glad you did this video! So insightful!
Iâm currently a first year SLP completing my CF, and I miss the hospital setting so much. During my internship prior to graduation, I worked in a rehab hospital with a great deal of patients with dysphagia. I completely agree with the shakes and âice creamâ desserts tasting great, but a lot of my patients were simply discouraged about not being able to eat regular foods and drink thin liquids at the moment/anymore. It was tough for them to come to terms with their new normal and the only way they could drink their morning coffee was with two packets of thickener in it. At that point, it just doesnât feel the same in their mouth especially if they already have sensory deficits. Not to mention, purĂ©ed macaroni and cheese or turkey and gravy doesnât look appetizing. I found that just acknowledging their struggles really helped their buy-in to trying the thickened liquids and our swallowing exercises and strategies.
This is awesome! As an RD, I truly love working alongside my SLP colleagues - they bring so much value to the team.
The biggest mistake any professional can make, is to disregard or look down on other disciplines such as us speech therapists.. Thanks for the video! â„ïž
Not with nurses we would be lost without speechies.
From a fellow RD, I ove that you highlighted the difference between a Registered Dietitian vs. a nutritionist! Also love that the
MD tried the barium test and ONS supplements. I could see the hesitation with the barium! Totally understand though lol
I'm currently studying to become an SLP, so watching this process of collaboration within the hospital setting was so exciting! Swallowing is a complex process but it happens so seamlessly for so many of us that we often take it for granted. Thanks for this, you're such an inspiration!
I love how cognizant you are of other health care professionals and the role they play in developing a patient care plan! As a hospital social worker this is sooooo much appreciated and I hope you teach this skill to your colleagues because itâs unfortunately not always something other doctors are aware and respectful of!
I love how you experience the things your patients have to go through. Makes you empathetic and credible when you talk to them. Keep it up, Doctor!
I have cerebral palsy, and due to several episodes of uncontrolled postoperative pain/bad doctor experiences as a teenager, I developed PTSD. I HATE hospitals, I can't even smell that institutional disinfectant smell without having a flashback. That I'm even watching your videos is a miracle, but I'm obsessed, and with every one I watch the trauma responses go down. So, thank you, Siobhan, so much. These mean way more than you know and have a positive impact beyond what you might think. xxx
I always appreciate when you do videos with other disciplines. It helps me understand what my students who want to go into those fields are going towards. :)
Iâm a nursing student and I love your videos! You are truly an inspiration đđđœ
Good luck with your studies and look after yourself.
I always get excited when I see your videos!!! I learn many things !!!â€ïžâ€ïž
If drinking the feeds by mouth pour them over ice! Iâve found my patients tolerate them SO much more if they are super cold. Great video! Iâve always been fascinated by SLP as I worked with babies and small children post cardiac surgery with lots of swallowing struggles and their assessments seemed like magic haha.
Great advice
Thank you for showcasing an aspect of the path of SLP đđ . Speaking from my own experience as someone who is pursuing the path of becoming an SLP, everyone always asks me what the field is and what SLPs do and so this is truly a great depiction of one of the many things SLPs do â€ïž
i want to be a paramedic but for some reason im absolutely obsessed with your videos! theyre so interesting and i find myself making notes most of the time haha :)
I'm late to the show! I have been binge watching your videos for the past twenty four hours!
May I offer a patient's view of the SLP? Twelve years ago after a right side CVA, my SLP during our sessions together discovered that although I could read a written very well, I was demonstrating an inability to comprehend what I was reading. SLP's help stroke patients to relearn to think clearly, follow instructions. Re- use our mouths correctly. Tongue exercises to help swallowing .They do too much for one video. Love your videos!
Hi Siobhan,
I am a pharmacy student studying in the US. I just got done with the GI/nutrition module at school and it is so awesome to see the process (including things to monitor: such as refeeding syndrome, etc. ) in clinical practice.
Thank you for the education!

As an RT i cannot tell you how incredibly helpful these vlogs have been! It really wraps everything up into one coherent bundle that i can digest. Thanks so much and keep it up!
Iâm in my last year of undergrad for speech pathology! So happy you filmed this! Love your videos đ
This is so cool! I'm glad I found this video. This gives an awesome insider perspective into how these professions function together in a healthcare setting and what each professionals role is. I want to be an SLP so I really appreciate this :)
i love how you are trying everything. Many doctors do not. It may seem like something small but when a patient knows you have tried it; it helps.
Congratulations on 300,000 subscribers! This channel has so much more potential then others. Keep up the good work Siobhan! You deserve it girl, â€
Amazing! I love seeing the interaction between different health care professionals! Medicine really is a team sport!
I was 40 in March. I had a cryptogenic stoke on March 11th, 2019. I was in the ICU in Barrows Desert in Phoenix for 7 days. I, luckily, had a thrombectomy that saved my life. Iâm now back to work part time and only my speech is impaired now. (Most wonât notice my speech impediment). I couldnât swallow at first. I had suppositories for medication. My swallowing and physical deficits can back fast, but it was the thrombectomy. I understand how crippling this life could be. I pray for your patient and love your videos!
Iâve now had 5 surgeries. Loop recorder implant, PFO closure, endometrial ablation, and cardiac ablation within 4 months. It was sad and chaotic. Iâm so glad to be back to my normal life (mostly).
đ
LOVE THAT YOU GOT TOGETHER WITH THE SLP. Iâm studying to be an SLP, and feel that people often forget that we play a role in hospital settings ! Love this ! Thank you
Thank you for this awesome video! I'm in the midst of my dietetic internship (currently in the ICU of a major hospital) and you've shed a (much needed) light on dysphagia! Your videos are brilliant, and I can't wait to dive into the research you've put out on using CZcams as an informative medium. Thanks for all you do for the healthcare world! Xx
This was so cool to watch from your perspective! As an mrt (xray) student, I work with slpâs during modified barium swallows very often, so it was interesting to see some behind the scenes as to what they do. Great videođ
How is barium modified?
Thanks so much for doing the video about SLPs! Thatâs what I plan to become so itâs helpful to have an insight on what they do in this setting!
These videos with all the different health professionals are brilliant Siobhan. It's amazing how many people it takes to get a patient well again, would love to see more. Kudos to you all for the work you do
Oh man, these videos are my happy place. You're so bubbly and personable and sweet and it helps push off the depression. I got so excited when I saw that notification, I needed this so much today.
