- Rishi Sunak has said he will introduce a new form of mandatory National Service for young people if the Conservatives win the general election.
In the first new policy announcement of the campaign, the prime minister has unveiled a plan that would see 18-year-olds given the choice of a full-time military placement for 12 months or a scheme to volunteer for one weekend a month for a year.
The placement would be selective - with tests used to decide who is eligible - and involve working with the armed forces or in cyber defence.

Former conscript here. I think if the Prime Minister wants to do this, he should first volunteer for the military himself.

The army didn't want National Service after the war. It was a pointless burden on them. Employers would not want to lose staff and the people themselves would be joining the army now if they wanted to do it. Who does want this? Old right wing colonels and codgers maybe?

At 82 I was overjoyed to miss Conscription as my many friends, acquaintances and hundreds of workmates on the railways where I was a fireman. With one exception but against him two young men I knew had gone on the Lam to avoid conscription. The US military said a year or more ago the UK Armed forces are no longer a serious force. So under the Tories. Labour put 2.5% into our armed forces the Tories 2% or less. This is what the Tories are covering up with this effort.

No one should be forced to do anything against their will. Not everyone is a fighter. Sending vulnerable young people away from families isn't good for all. Young people have been assaulted ,raped and killed by their so called comrades or commanders. People should reject this move as barbaric and not for modern society. There are men and women who desire a life in the forces. They are usually healthy, strong and capable. We don't want our families used as cannon fodder or to die to depopulate the world.

Conscription ceased in 1967 for a good reason. Modern weapons were seen as superior to large forces. Equip them properly first, improve the offer not this. The standard will be poor and lead to more war crimes as we see currently with forces that utilise inexperienced or necessarily professional soldiers. If we move to a world war then everyone will be called up anyway.
