Classic Land Cruiser broke through the ice and stranded overnight!

- This classic 1984 Toyota Land Cruiser broke through the ice when crossing a flooded and frozen portion of the trail and got stuck in the middle. Unfortunately they had to leave it overnight and and the cold temperatures froze it in place. A friend of mine stopped and attempted to winch them out, but the ice was too hard and it just stalled out his winch, so I brought the 4x4 wrecker out so that I could use the boom to provide some lift to help break it free. After I got it to pop free of the ice, it was a simple pull all the way back to solid ground. Overall it was a very simple job, just with a very hard pull at the beginning to break the ice.

You might think about carrying a pair of over boots for situations where you might get your feet soaked.
Grumpy is getting pretty good with the camera, even seeing shots to make a still out of.

I think it’s fantastic you take Grumpy with you and that he is a retired Master Locksmith. I am a master Locksmith myself. Must be something with Locksmiths that are into recoveries etc.
If you keep following that trail into Sisters it gets really deep. I had water up to my doors in my Tahoe last week driving that trail into town. Good job Casey! Sisters locals drive that trail often cause we find people stuck there all the time lol. Have a great week Casey.

I watched a suctioned vehicle recovery and the operator used a yankum kinetic rope, but not like normal. He stretched the rope until as tight as it would get, then set the brake and opened a Mt. Dew. By the time that dew was gone, the rope had recoiled enough to dislodge that vehicle safely.
Suctioned in place and frozen in place are very different. Suction will move slowly, frozen will not move at all.

Grumpy stayed out of the ice and water. Casey thought it was a swimming hole. Wet feet should have had your rubber boots on for water and traction.

Well done … it’s funny physics in play that make it almost certain that the ice will break through only after you’ve made it tantalizingly close to the other side … as heavy as that Land Cruiser is …I’m surprised how little the front end sunk as Casey pulled up on the rear across that patchy ice … should have sank to the hubs and pulled like a land anchor!

If you put a tire standing up by the truck stuck, then hook your cable up over it then to the stuck vehicle. It will pull it up and out. Old trick we use here in utah

Casey remember the reason Grumpy askes you what you going do, what is the plan. You said going rig this and that and pull this out. Remember you gotta talk through it all for viewers plus so you are reviewing what you thinking before you do it. That Landcruiser was indeed tidy! Obviously a 2F gas engine - over here in Australia, the more common Landcruiser 60 series was the HJ60 with the 2H 4 litre 6 cylinder indirect injection diesel or the 12H-T 6 cylinder direct injection turbocharged diesel engine

Ice can be treacherous. If it is solid and thick you can drive on it just fine, but if you break through you are in trouble. I once had an entertaining few hours, here in Minnesota, watching some people (they were locals and should have known better) who had driven out onto the lake too close to where the creek ran in causing the ice to be thin. They broke through right to the frame and by the time they got it out with a big old log skidder their brand new pickup truck looked like it had been beaten with a a sledge hammer.

I love your dad or grandpa character in your videos. He is the real deal. He reminds me of my dad. Not sure if he is your dad or your grandpa. One thing for sure, frozen rescues are completely different than normal weather conditions. I think the people who were stuck have or had no idea how deadly cold weather can be. You cannot just drive through a swamp even if you have a toyota land cruiser. Anyone can see it' s been flooded and frozen over. Simple logic - don't drive there.

Icy roads are not fun.!! You made it look good. Take care of yourself and Grumpy. I spent over a year recuperating from stepping on ice just the wrong way. Shattered one lower leg bone and had to have the other bone anchored to one of my ankle bones. Not fun 6months keeping that foot off the floor and 3 surgeries to get everything right. I don't want anyone to ever have to go through what I did.
