  • Assassin's Creed Unity released on the same day as Assassin's Creed Rogue on November 11th, 2014. I think many of you know Assassin's Creed Unity didn't have the best launch riddled with bugs and technical issues, and for a long time that reputation followed Assassin's Creed Unity until the last few years where the public opinion on it has gotten more positive. Today I talk about the wasted potential of Assassin's Creed Unity, the history it's development and why I believe it COULD have been the best Assassin's Creed game...

    I replayed this game and I really liked it. The only problem I found was the voice acting since the Frenchmen sounded really English but changing the language to French really makes it wonderful.

      French is the way to go with this game 100% I did like this blind run also no HUD... all the way with the Janitor Mod, however the game of ubisoft still are too punishing against those who search for quality ingames.. no mod allowance, and way too "accessibility" focused.. they need to make people who understand quality enjoy it... Unity anyway is the last before streamlining and so on.

I recently read AC Rennaissance (the AC 2 novel adaptation) and had trouble finishing it as I felt the story was boring. In game, it's less so, but I think it's waaaay to long and prefer fewer assassinations and/or more meaningful. If it's the world, I think it's one of the best, and as for game play, I prefer brotherhood, but otherwise, I want to know

      The parkour could do with a bit of reversion to old controls (though that would make the animations far less fluid and flashy and we can't have that now can we? sigh) and less overt magnetic snapping, but the actual gameplay loop and stealth mechanics I definitely felt had good design ideas behind them. Especially having two buttons for fast tool use. A lot of it really does feel like AC1's ideas but done better, but it was left bug-ridden and the story felt like it had to have multiple plot threads amputated to rush to fit the release window.

  • @themagicalblingbling
    @themagicalblingbling Před rokem +47

    I maintain to this day that Paris during the French Revolution is the absolute best setting this franchise could ever hope for. Dense urban environments in a vast city, gorgeous architecture, a turning point in history and no clear set of "good guys" from the get go, as the various factions kept radicalising and turning on each other as the revolution progressed. It's a shame the story of the game didn't capitalise on this, they should have made it so the assassins don't quite know who to align themselves with and jump to supporting different factions as the game progresses, unsure which side the Templars are backing or what their endgame is. Don't get me wrong, I like the Elise / Arno romance, but the tie-in to the historical setting could have been done a lot better.

    • @TSpoon823
      @TSpoon823 Před rokem +1

      Agreed. That's one thing I felt they nailed with AC1, parts of the Ezio trilogy, AC3 and Black Flag. The historical setting mattered and was noticable even if it wasn't front and center. You felt like you were in the Holy Land during the crusades even if the war was only a backdrop. Conor was clearly a player in the revolutionary war in a way that made sense. The golden age of piracy is what shaped Edward. But with Unity, the French Revolution really didn't do anything. Aside from the visuals, it was mostly absent and played little part in the story they were trying to tell. The brotherhood conflict and Arno and Elise's relationship could have happened anywhere in my opinion. Definitely a weak point of the game.

The game could have been the new beginning for Assassins Creed however them wanting to put out Rogue and Unity at the same time handicapped both the games. Whats sad honestly is the fact that co op was so hyped up and marketed but when it dropped you can't do story missions.
    And there's very few co op missions. Most are pretty easy especially if your teammate is another high level assassin. Then the fights don't last long anyways.
    And the fact that unity didn't have a notoriety system like the others made things more boring.

    To me Unity isn't just a wasted potential because it was a rushed product, but because of the setting as well, the French Revolution is probably one of the greatest moments in history for an Assassin's Creed game to take place in, the common people uniting and revolting against the elite, taking over the power for themselves, "Liberty, Equality, Fraternity", isn't that what the creed is all about? and yet NONE of that is present in the story, I still get mad when I think about what an amazing story we could've had if the developers cared about the historic element of this moment, but instead we got a terrible Romeo & Juliet story that makes Arno look like a complete imbecile, the trailers is what the game should've been like, but of course, like in so many cases in Ubisoft, the trailer is 10x better that what we actually get.
    And yes, I agree that the gameplay of Unity is the greatest in the entire series, and the reason why the parkour and animations didn't come back is probably because it's too much work for a company like Ubisoft to do it again, the parkour in Unity feels unique to the map, like it was made thinking about the structures and buildings, I doubt something like this would even be possible in a game as large as Valhalla for instance, and of course the co-op missions, they are super fun and are the only moments in the game where I get a brief taste of the french revolution elements that I expected, but of course, because it's Ubisoft, they are STILL a buggy mess, the rare times I actually managed to get a mission going, 90% it would get bugged, we completed all the objectives but the mission just wouldn't end, it was actually really cool to play with other people and see their own custom Arno, which brings me to the customization.
    I never see anyone talking about this but the customization of Unity is AMAZING, again the best one of the entire series, even better than Odyssey or Valhalla, there's so many pieces and so many combinations that you'd probably never find 2 Arnos that look the same, to the people who actually bothered of course, they managed to create outfits and pieces that felt like they belonged to the time and place that the game takes place in, but still fit in the robes of an Assassin, none of that flashy Isu shit, it felt unique and legitimate, another point that we'll probably never see again.
    I want to like Unity but the story just ruins this game for me, Arno is probably one of the worst Assassins in the entire series that only cares for himself and nothing else, if Arno and Elise were real people in the French Revolution they'd be one of the many heads that ended up in baskets in front of the guillotine.

    In an alternate universe where Unity launched with no bugs and well-received, RPG Creeds dont exist (Rip Origin but worth the sacrifice), We got lots of Unity-inspired parkour AC games where we have full fledged cool COOP missions or hell, maybe even a COOP AC game.

  • @CinematicSeriesGaming
    @CinematicSeriesGaming Před rokem +1

    Unity is a good game but it's definitely undercooked. The parkour has nice moves but it's awfully floaty and imprecise; the combat finishers are nice but there are too few of them and the combat feels very clumsy; you can crouch and sneak around but the stealth system is very basic - the cherry bombs don't even work properly and the AI can't be manipulated in any interesting ways. I feel like Unity was a turning point for Ubisoft. They really tried to go back to the roots after Black Flag and it would have worked if only the game was in development for an additional year. In a year they could polish all the gameplay systems, work on the story, make more missions, fix the bugs, refine the big crowds, add more combat and stealth features etc.
    Unity is also a perfect example of Ubisoft's failure to iterate. Unity CUT a lot of features from previous games for no reason. You can't use hidden blades in combat, you can only have one type of weapon equipped, the chain kills are gone, the combat is basic and lacks the flair of the previous games, you can't whistle to lure enemies behind corners or to hiding spots, you can't disarm opponents, you can't pick up weapons from the ground to improvise, you can't air assassinate people with swords, spears or muskets like in ACIII and Black Flag, there are no musketeers shooting you in a collumn like in ACIII, there are very few enemy archetypes, you can't carry bodies etc. Ubisoft has this very annoying tendency of forgetting about features that worked very well in previous games. They introduce something really fun and impressive in one game and then immediately get rid of it in the next. WHY??? Unity feels so much shallower than Ezio Trilogy, just because it didn't build on previous systems properly.
    I blame the decline of AC series partially on Unity. Because this game was rushed, unfinished and buggy, Ubisoft started experimenting with other ideas like turning AC into an RPG series. I can imagine an alternate reality where AC Unity was a spectacular success and the series never devolved into fantasy RPGs.

I was so excited to play this game, but my damn PC wasn't good enough to even run it at low settings 😂 and I did not had a PS4 as it was quite expensive for a 13 year old in India.

    What grinds my gears is that Ubisoft completely misinterpreted WHY people were getting sick of AC after Syndicate. It wasn't because the games were bad, but because Ubi lost the consumers' trust after releasing Unity in such a broke state. I’m currently replaying it in my Xbox One (the fat XOne), and it is one of the games in my opinion that has used the previous generation potential to the max, coming out with the new video games back in 2014 it’s insane to think that it was already testing the new boundaries of those hardwares (usually they play safe at the beginning of the generation and go slowly improving) … that’s another thumbs up for Unity and Ubisoft (apart from everything that was said in the video with which I 100% agree)

    I did not have a PS4 until 2016 or 2017 so I never played it when it had its main issues but Unity has been my favorite since I did play. The combat and parkour were great and it felt like an AC game.

    I wonder if its possible for modders to fix up the game? sorta like how skyrim has a bunch of mods to fix the game and improve it. I'm betting if someone was able to make a mod where the animation bugs are fixed, crowds less buggy, (even slightly) and fixes to the parkour system. that alone could bring in 1000s of players. But I do understand modding games, ones that make it very hard to do any sorta of big changes like that. would not only take a lot of time to do but could get ubisoft to act out.

    I'm playing unity for the first time in 2023. I'm enjoying it quite a lot, but sometimes the inability to control my character is shocking. The cover system needed more polish, and sometimes Arno seems to do way more pathfinding than following the control stick. But the combat is more fun than origins. It is actually quite a difficult stealth game, but the animations are really cool and the number of tools seems appropriate, even though smoke bombs are clearly more powerful than the rest of his kit. I'm finding some uses for cherry bombs, but it's a little painstaking when guards don't respond to the sound but only the visual.

    Who else agrees that unitys world is the most realistic, vivid and best looking out of all ACs? not even the upcoming mirage seems to have that kind of realistic lighting, reflections, colorations and what so ever to make it look like THIS deliciously old unity. Why did u changed trail Ubisoft?!

  • @ConnorWiederich-hr4zu
    @ConnorWiederich-hr4zu Před rokem +1

    I'd say the biggest changes that would have helped Unity were waiting to release the game until the bugs were fixed, having the story revolve around Arno looking for Shay, making more of the cast memorable, and not overstuffing the map with collectibles especially chests. It also would have been nice to have a 3rd person modern day, minus the collectibles and being pulled out of the story often. I also wish the reward for doing the riddles in Paris was better.
    Other than that, this game has a lot of great features: Customization, side content missions, the renovation system, Paris is detailed and beautiful and works for parkour, combat isn't too easy, the Dead Kings DLC is one of the best DLCs in the series, and the black box missions are really fun.

    With 2k 60fps ray tracing and coop. It would have given us hope for the future.
    Hopefully mirage does a decent job. I liked origins alot and mirage reminds me of origins and the fact that its just one city and not so heavy on the rpg elements, i will most probably pick it up.

    You know how Arno's high profile automatically parkours that is within his waist height, right? And goes down if the system thinks that it is safe. Like when you are parkouring between ropes and Arno goes down to a safe rope even tho you didn't even touch the parkour down button. Or any platfor whatsoever.
    you can actually stop Arno from accidentally jumping on top of barrels, chairs, tables, and chimneys. And even stoping Arno from going down the ledge when holding high profile at the edge of the roof. Or stop Arno from parkouring when going from platform to platform at the edge of the building.
    By holding the crouch button while holding high profile prevents every single one of the things you can accidentally jump to and off to because of the automatic parkour system of just holding high profile
    In this way, it stops Arno of doing any parkour what so ever. what's even better is thag you can hold the crouch, and parkour up and down, and Arno will do one of the desired order you did even tho you are holding the crouch button to stop Arno from parkouring. It gives you control on stopping him from jumping off or onto when holding high profile.
    And yes, I know holding the crouch button while pointing your movement keys onto a window is an easy way to get inside.

Reading the last letter written by Elise being sent just before her death damn near broke my heart, especially sense I can relate to Arnos perspective reading it years later. Even went further to read the other letters she wrote finishing with her first letter and you just hear him say "I never did convince her father to take me to Paris" after getting up made me chuckle with sadness. Honestly beautiful🤙🏽

    Assassins Creed Unity used to be my 2nd favorite entry in the series
    I defended it and always praised it for years. I adored it.
    But the more I replay it with time... The more I hate it for what it could've been.
    Honestly with time its combat and parkour has become my least favorite of the series in terms of how frustrating and unpolished it is.
    The automation in Unity is so bad for parkour. When it works it looks great... When Arno does the exact opposite of everything you want it drives me mental. Coming from a guy who spends hours just free running in the old games
    I hate combat because of broken indicators not showing up for melee hits or guns, and the guns being so busted with enemies. Being shot often without the enemy pulling out the gun made me infuriated beyond belief... Oh and sometimes parries refusing to work even when you're mashing parry for 1-3 hits...
    The thing is, its so easy to not notice the combat bugs. I never noticed them until my last few times on the game. Unless you're focusing in you won't notice it as much. Actually that's the case for Unity's bugs in general
    Unity is still extremely buggy, just not to a blatant extent as before.
    Its still so buggy to the point that people saying that "I never experienced any bugs" simply never realized they were experiencing bugs. Unity's systems are that unpolished on a fundamental level that I'd argue its objectively flawed and easy to recreate bugs in normal gameplay.
    Despite all this, I still like Unity despite hating it at the same time. It had the right ideas just the most terrible execution for so many of them.
    I will never forget the first time I experienced it as a kid and adoring how it felt and looked.

    I know Unity had one of the longest development times within the franchise, but this alone doesn't say much. Even ordinary sequels, like God of War Ragnarok and Jedi Survivor, take 4 to 5 years in development.
    Unity, which aimed to overhaul the engine, mechanics, and graphics, push to 1:1 scale, include crowds with hundreds of people, and achieve all that it tried to do between single-player and co-op experiences, had around 3 years of development with the team split between numerous other AC titles. It's insane - such sky-high ambition with so little time...

    Unity, I just played it for the first time, I don't like the grind and requrement to play it again in order to enjoy the true fully developed (not over powered as I like hyper realism and immersion, thoughtful immerion and playing without eagle vision etc as well as no HUD) but the game besides that is a total blast. The cut scenes are amazing, the parkour, I love this besides some issues with chairs or unfinished boulders sort of side walks stopping you, and I don't like the navigation needing HUD on in order to reach something.. the game should have voice over or other systems that allow you to find out how to reach something... or maybe just my memory remembering how many hoods I read in the map and just do it in the 3d space without reopening map or popping up the HUD, a few other things might be wrong like the Horrible over imposed sounds of alerts and other things like the flashing effect of getting spotted... a huge disincentive not to get spotted I guess... But for the rest is just a total blast. I like it and I see the huge art and quality potential etc like in Origins... I played that one too without HUD.. it took some time 80 hours, this one shorter but great and definitely worth replaying even if I despise makers of game that require to replay a game to have total satisfaction.

    This is my favorite Assassin’s Creed. The story loses ALL it’s steam after the first assassination mission, but the gameplay and setting are the absolute best in the franchise. They never get old. I can hop on this game and lose hours of time just exploring Paris and taking out enemies. If Mirage is successful and they decide to make a classic game from the ground up, THIS is the place to start for sure.

    i think really my only major issue with this game is how the weapons were designed...idk if i just dreamt it but i swear i thought i watched a development video where they talked about how the weapons would be balanced and there wouldnt just be some, ultimate weapon with the best stats the way it is now where all the golden weapons are just the best
    ...even if they didnt say that, it still doesn't feel all too great when i personally like the look of the officer's saber more or Arno's pistol more but it does less damage than the schiavona and the gold plated pistol, just not a big fan of "tacky, gold weapon = best" instead of the weapons being more practical and balanced

    I really think a year delay would have saved the series in the long run. Iron out the bugs and glitches, build the story more so that the player cares about the events, sees character development, and remembers the campaign (it is so forgettable the way it stands now). Making the side content a bit more fleshed out with dialogue from arno and stuff wouldve been great too. I think if this had been done it would have been everything the players had ever wanted in the series and it would look a lot different now as a result

    Unity is really fun to play. I could literally spend days if I had that time just free running and absorbing Paris. It's a beautiful world, and even replayability wise, it's cool to go back and use different tactics and different outfits and weapons. It's a really cool system, better done than the RPG games. I just wish they had stuck with that engine a little longer. Syndicate was okay, but it didn't have the same fluidity. I want another game where it feels like unity. Even if they want to stick with the RPG design, even if they want to go back to the "roots", I want another unity type. And I had the benefit of playing it like a year after launch, so I never really had those game-breaking bugs. Couple things here and there, but same thing for pretty much every assassin's creed, nay every game. And when you ignore that bad launch, it's just a great game that got ignored because it was plagued with issues. If people gave it a chance if they still haven't, they'd love it, and it would be a top 5 AC for any AC fan. Personally top 3 for me.
