  • Do you agree? Disagree? Let me know what you think, I'd love to start a discussion around this.
    I think a few things I want to clarify is that I don't hate the other Assassin's Creed games however I do think Unity is the best in the franchise. I didn't bother comparing Unity to games that came after such as Assassins Creed Origins stray so much from what makes a game an Assassins Creed game that comparing it to Assassins Creed Unity would be far too long and not very meaningful in the video. I appreciate you guys for watching and if you want, you can watch more video essays from myself and NAM12399

    Assassin's Creed Unity is an action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It was released in November 2014 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. It is the eighth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series, and the successor to 2013's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. It also has ties to Assassin's Creed Rogue which was released for the previous generation consoles, the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 on the same date.
    The plot is set in a fictional history of real world events and follows the centuries-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The story is set in Paris during the French Revolution; the single-player story follows Arno Victor Dorian in his efforts to expose the true powers behind the Revolution. The game retains the series' third-person open world exploration as well as introducing a revamped combat, parkour and stealth system. The game also introduces cooperative multiplayer to the Assassin's Creed series, letting up to four players engage in narrative-driven missions and explore the open world map.
    Assassin's Creed Unity is an action-adventure stealth game set in an open world environment. The game was meant to be rebuilt, with fencing being used as an inspiration for the new system. In addition to returning weapons from previous games, Assassin's Creed Unity introduces the Phantom Blade. The Phantom Blade uses the mechanics of a crossbow to fire a silent projectile at a great distance, while still serving the same role as the Hidden Blade in previous Assassin's Creed games. Navigation for the game was also overhauled: new "Free-run up" and "Free-run down" commands were added to make it easier for the player to scale buildings in either direction. Additionally, Arno learns new moves throughout the game, but the player can also purchase new skills as well. With the updated, larger crowds, new interactions with them are also available. The crowd regularly presents many activities, appearing organically, that the player can then choose to engage in at their leisure. Examples include scaring a group of bullies by pulling out a weapon, "settling" a disagreement between two civilians by killing one of them, which is usually a Templar, or chasing down a thief who has just pick pocketed somebody.
    For the first time, the series allows players to customize the characters' abilities, adopting a skill tree that enables players to assign points earned through gameplay to improve their skills in stealth, melee, and ranged combat, and health. Players are also able to customise their weapons, armour and equipment to further complement their individual style of play. Players also have a wider selection of weapons available, including swords, axes, spears, rifles, pistols and throwable items, such as smoke bombs. The expansion DLC, Assassin's Creed Dead Kings, adds the formidable guillotine gun.
    Assassin's Creed Unity received mixed reviews upon its release. Praise was directed towards its visuals, improved gameplay, customization options, multiplayer-oriented format, mission design, setting, characterization, and narrative. However, the game was criticized for a lack of gameplay-innovation, unrefined controls, and numerous graphical issues and bugs upon release. Because of the game's poor launch owing to the technical issues, Ubisoft issued an apology, and offered compensation.
    Assassin's Creed Unity was followed by Assassin's Creed Syndicate, which takes place in Victorian England, and was released in October 2015.

      Yes Ezio is beloved and almost everyone agrees that he's fun and engaging and overall enjoyable. And that's one definition for a great character. But he is still lacking a lot of depth, which was only fixed by assassins creed embers. Arno while not being as fun or enjoyable, actually had a lot of depth to his character. The writers portrayed him being torn between his love for Elise and her heritage as templar and his heritage as an assassin really good. While Ezio is one of the coolest video game characters, Arno seemed much more human to me. Although that character arc wise, Edward and his redemption take the cake in this regard.

      @@MrXoohoo ezio also has a lot of depth tho. All ezio has ever wanted was to lead a confortable life surrounded by loved ones which we see even in ac2. However what's even greater is ezio's ambition as he constantly sacrifices his dreams and confortable life to fulfill his goals. He even almost gave up at the start of ac brotherhood but the life he chose didn't let him go that easily. He may be confident and charismatic on the outside but all he wants is to settle down and have a fulfilling life but he we always see him sacrifice that dream for his ambitions. he's always driven by his ambitions of revenge, finding out the truth about the artifacts and his own heritage. At the end in embers, we see him evaluating with him accepting the limits of his ambition. My only issue with arno is that his personality is pretty uninteresting, like he's not as charasmatic as ezio or Edward and that's the only character trait he has making some of the interactions a little stale and boring. His interactions with elise are pretty cool but that's because they're flirting most the time and that's when his charisma rly shines. Other than that he doesn't have any other note worthy character traits.

      I think this game has one of the best characters in the series like Arno's master and the beggar king but this is definitely not the best story. It's actually a copy and paste of AC2. Ezio and Arno look very similar and even their story is similar as well. The protagonist looses their father and father like uncle by Templars. They then go for revenge mission. Then they watch their lover die infront of them. But still the game still had quite look enjoyable missions through.

    The thing that pisses me off was back when this was released, and the articles, journalists, and random internet person always referred to the same video and the same image of the missing face bug. Whenever anyone references the bugs in the game, I see that same picture. This says to me that one person found it early on, happened to be recording, uploaded it, and everyone ate it up. Imagine if that famous Red Dead Redemption glitch video of the Mountain Lion model-swapped with the woman happened, and then everyone decided to shit on the game for being full of bugs. The game did allow you to play it before it finished downloading, which was where I encountered any of the bugs I've ever encountered in this game. I ended up setting the game aside for a week or something like that, and never saw another bug. It seems to me, there s a lot of hate towards AC games in general, even Odyssey, my personal favorite. I like unity and, as for the other AC titles, it wasnt perfect, still fun. However there s a huge gap between the reality and the trash many reviewers makes us to believe. Point #1 of extreme criticism: narrative: I am a picky reader and as such, there s no game with a good plot / lore, maybe I d exclude the witcher because there s some previous written storyline by an actual writer and I felt like the story and the world were already there,#2 repetetive gameplay - defenitly yes mostly in the first titles....I still have to play AC 3, but black flag, gameplay wise, my second favorite, is it still repetitive?, yes, when you end up playing hundreds of ours of a certain game of course it becomes repetitive but what makes us love Ac games is that they are relatively easy games, (but not for hardcore gamers for sure), educational, transport us in time like no other game, the settings are wonderfull and they put a lot of historic research into it , and #3 not fun....sorry but Red Dead redemption is triple A, super good looking, but I havent had any fun with it and I end up reselling it because it doesnt match my playstyle , the main reason? Too realistic.... At the end, in terms of pure game mechanics developing, Ac games are not a triple A, but still far from being trash. Most hate comes from the huge sucess of the Ac series, it happens all the time everywhere with everything in life... at the end of the day, we who love AC creed wont listen and I bet we will pick these games just to walk around and appreciate the sandboxes they created...it happens to me a lot of time at least :D

      They both feel sympathy for their targets, but unlike Altair's targets who believed they were doing good, Arno's targets saw themselves as a pawn for the greater good. The Templars and the assassins became two sides of a war as time went onward, unlike the first couple games where they were just good guy and bad guy.
      Arno's character intrigued me because he had a deep emotional connection to a templar. Not just a romantic one, but a very deep and personal one. Arno was always doubting himself, going crazy while doing so. Only in the end he fully understands the assassin code.

    Unity always makes me the most sad because, more than any other game in the franchise, it had so much potential that wasn’t quite reached. Ubisoft obviously didn’t give themselves enough time to put out a polished game upon release and that just hurt their image even more.
    In terms of STORY, it wasn’t fully fleshed out and I felt it sort of wasted its intriguing setting. The Revolution was pushed aside a lot when including more aspects of it could have been more engaging. And they really didn’t make the most of the templar vs assassin conflict. Here you have a romance that could do so much to blur the lines between the enemies. Balec showed the ugly side of an assassin so consumed with the ancient conflict, EXPAND ON THAT. The Paris brotherhood were perfect to add a touch of grey to the supposed good guys. Show the Templars as more than evilly twirling their moustaches, they believe in control over freedom but this doesn’t make them inherently malicious. Why would the Templars be inciting the revolution further when they preach order over chaos? What if at first Robespierre was with the assassins, preaching for freedom from the monarchy, but then went too far to the point of tyranny. Demonstrate the issues with the assassin’s doctrine of freedom. COMPLICATE THE DICHOTOMY BETWEEN THE ORDERS BECAUSE HISTORY IS NEVER THAT SIMPLE. Make both Elise and Arno question their allegiances and ideologies. Make the player do same. The foundation was there but they tragically never delved deeper.

      I love Unity bugginess and all on launch. Buy you nailed here. They had the plot points and story set up perfectly but it felt rushed or short. Its easily my favorite setting and character. While people may have loved black flag for the pirate aspect it was just that, a pirate game with the Assassin stuff thrown in at the end it felt like. Unity was a major change and it felt alive. The city ebbed and flowed at times and could make getting around on the street hard. Having spent some time in Paris years ago i loved getting see to the buildings and shops and talking with friends about what the shop was in 2005/06. The elise arno romance was well done but left you wanting more. It provided that gray area for both the Order and Brotherhood where individual ideals were warping the tenants of each. First playthru it really felt like a possible crossing over point for some memebers of both sides when they realize the other side is more right for them. Arno’s rise then fall and reacceptance into the brotherhood felt more like an actualy person who gets fried from their dream job and has to pull themselves thru the depression and despair to get back to where they want to be. Overall i just wanted more story from it and wish one day to get that

    • @giovi1122
      @giovi1122 Před 4 lety +1

      Matt Bryan Matt Bryan For sure, they were definitely on to something with Unity and it’s sad to see that Ubisoft just completely scrapped it instead of taking the time to improve upon the foundations they had now laid out (those bustling streets were definitely a highlight). I feel like the ideas surrounding Unity have pretty much been abandoned which is pretty disappointing. On the subject of Black flag: Though you’re right that the Assassin lore was a bit tacked on, Edward Kenway still had an amazing character arc which really elevated the game in my opinion. His story worked great with the idea of freedom and free will but also ultimately finding a balance where he took on more responsibility and came to realize the damage caused by his recklessness. When you look at it from that perspective, he still fits into the creed (at least thematically). But Unity and Arno definitely made the effort to form a better direct connection to the brotherhood and truthfully explore the nature of both the assassins and the Templars. *Sigh* it could have been fantastic.

    • @mattbryan7589
      @mattbryan7589 Před 4 lety +1

      Giovanna Acosta thats the thing i feel the worst about it that they had a chance to explore both templar and assassin ideals in a revolutionary era. With Rogue they set up the assassin to templar theme and sorta carried it over with Ballec in Unity. While im not exactly wishing Elise would have flipped sides i think she had the potential to do so. Her character was well done albeit a horrible ending i feel. Arno was setting up to clean house and reset the French order back to what it should be. It would have been a completely different dynamic for the series. It just had so much potential and got left aside

      Super JLK The leap of faith in odyssey has no meaning it’s just a way for quick traversal and not mentioned has anything other than that. Darius doesn’t act like an assassin he wants to stay hidden so saying in the shadows is an effective way to stay out of the orders sights he wears a hood for the same reason because it’s low profile same with the rest of his out. Ayas first civ would have been become weaker because of the mixing of blood between her parents and other family the. The hidden blade making its way to cleopatra is a mystery that can be explained in the future but I’m guessing he protected elpidios until his death until he either passed it on to him or became friends with higher ups who didn’t agree with the order like cleopatras family and it was stated in odyssey that the spear contained both dna of two similar people and siblings would be very similar in terms of dna so the animus used that dna but found two paths to follow so it simulated two people not knowing which was the true one

They gave away DLC for free because of the backlash and back-pedalled almost as badly as the mother energy drinks (that have a label saying nothing like the original) going back to the tried and true AC games afterwards giving us the interactions we all loved. Unity is a great game after its patch but misses out on what makes AC games AC games; the character interactions which felt rushed and forced in unity compared to its other games in the series.

    What I loved most about this game was that the character looked leaner than in all the other games. Arno looked leaner and more agile than all the other (male) Assassins. And I think that look is more fitting to an Assassin. You look more agile, more deadly but also more vulnerable. Also his robes and general gear looked amazing and better than the following games.
    I also loved the athomsphere and the map of this game. The feel of the revolution was carried out greatly and Paris itself contributed a great share to it. I think this was the best map for an Assassin's Creed. It only featured one city but this city was huge. There was a lot to explore both horizontally and vertically. London from AC Syndicate was also a cool city but the whole city and graphics felt to grey-ish to me. I prefer Paris for that reason.
    Last but not least I also liked the colors of this game. I believe Unity featured the best color set in the series. It outclassed all the ACs before concerning graphics and color setting. Syndicate had the same colors but looked too grey-ish in my opinion. Origin just didn't have enough environmental and color variety to satisfy me, it felt like the main color of that game was sand. Odyssey is coming the closest and boy it was beautiful but for me it was a little too colorful, the color set was too much based on "nature colors". I just prefer the style of Unity in that aspect.

    One thing you have to hand to this game is the characterization of Arno, he has that Captain Jack Sparrow swagger and excellent voice acting with that “it” factor. They could have taken this guy to a second story and intertwined his story with Connors (maybe even creating a way to play both characters in the same game).
