His contribution to literature is also undisputed, he created a genre of non-fiction on with In Cold Blood but my favorite is his first novel Other Voices, Other Rooms. Reading In Cold Blood right now and can't put it down. Can't believe waited so long to read such a well written book. His personality doesn't necessarily match his writing style, would expect a 6 foot western type of cowboy. He uses simple, straightforward storytelling with a lot of depth. He is one of the greats.

I love Cavett's style "Do you feel that Truman is dominating the conversation?". The audience applauded. Cavett is a true gentleman, it was his way of asking to Groucho to shut his yap. Groucho was too dense or too belligerant to oblige. I tuned in to listen to Capote and was much disappointed. I outgrew the Marx brothers brand of humor in my childhood. It has not improved with age.
For Ryan Lum..."Groucho put him to shame with real facts." Rather, Capote did not wish to embarrass Cavett. Capote was raised on Southern etiquette. In the rules of hospitality, a guest never dishonors his host by making another guest uncomfortable. Capote could have sliced Groucho to ribbons but restrained himself out of courtesy and refinement. If you read any Capote you will meet a most subtle and creative mind. Groucho is no more than the proverbial bull in a china shop.

Cavett was a weak moderator in this case and did not handle Groucho's insistence on being the center of attention and usurping Truman's interview time well at all. At the very least, Cavett could have ignored Groucho's comments and talked more directly to Truman without allowing Groucho to constantly interrupt and bring the attention back to himself. Off camera during commercial breaks, Groucho should have been politely told to shut up and back off or leave. Instead Cavett kept laughing at his humorless interjections and giving him the attention he was determined to take away from Capote. What an insecure narcissistic excuse of a human being that guy was. Socially stunted, infantile, ignorant and inappropriate. Completely lacking in respect for others. RIP, unfunny man.

He was a Libra. Libras are all about justice. He wanted the glaring truth out. The high society didn't like that when he wanted the truth out, that was their dirty laundry. He wasn't arrogant, he was the real deal. Brave enough to live openly gay at that time was actually very brave. What reporters label with words like ''tragedy'' ''failed'' etc. only words to do their job which is shocking the crowd over and over with big newspaper words, that's all. None of us are black & white, we are all complicated individuals but not as openly as Capote was. ''He looked at me and tears came into his eyes, and put his hand on my arm and he said Al 'n' he said let me go, I want to go.'' - and the ''glaring truth'' went with him. I salute the man! Rest in peace.

As Groucho got older he was less and less able to be anything but the center of attention. Truman was also a tremendous ego, so having the two of them together was never going to go well. Maybe if this were the Groucho of 1930, things would have gone differently. This show was taped in May 1971, pretty much the last of Groucho being fully cogent. He suffered a series of small strokes later that year and steadily declined until his death in 1977.
