  • Hi
    Want to know how World Cup racers warm up the first days of a new season? Look no further. In this video Matej Vidovik takes on the gates in a very controlled and technique focused manner.
    Thank you Matej Vidovic for the clips. As always, it is an honor to have you ski on my channel.

    Vidovic is on that new new new stuff. Next level slalom skills. Watching him ski the brushies/stubbies should open up everyones eyes to the genius in these turns. As a coach, I see aspects of this technique that can be taught immediately. So many slalom skiers learn rapid gates incorrectly. I did!! This reverse engineers the methodology of skiing around a point in the snow versus continuously thinking of having to engage the gate. So much good stuff in these visuals. Thanks for sharing. Certainly the type of stuff that many coaches would keep hidden from other competitors. The ankle work and foot/hip steering is tremendous.

    Hi Tom!
    Your content is as good as always, thanks! Along with Matej perfect skiing this clip is outstanding. One side question though. What would you say about Matej and other professional skiers upper body alignment? From first days on skis they tell you to do counteracting and coilling, not to rotate your torsso etc. Taking closer look on pro-skiers (like Matej) I can clearly see that his torsso follows the skis. I am confused here. Moreover last season I started to push my inside shoulder back in order to get rid of hip-dump. That helped a lot and made me confused even more. Haha.

      Triggerboy62 : exactly. Videos don’t show the core muscle engagement or the movement from going in one direction to another (because it is continuous and synced). Additionally, the super low center of gravity in racing is not as frequently used, or needed, in recreational skiing.

    to me almost looks like there is a focused tipping of the inside ski leg, toward the end of the turn, it is very noticeable at the 4:00 mark in slow motion. Any idea why? Maybe a cue to help with the muscle memory?

    • @simonwyne3723
      @simonwyne3723 Před 4 lety

      It's to help get that inside ski on its edge more. The shape of the skis edge is really what drives the turn, so the tipping is done to compensate/match the angle of the outside skis edge making for a smooth turn.

    • @gu5907
      @gu5907 Před 4 lety +2

      It sets up early angles for the next turn. It's the first move in a phantom release and helps you get a really good a-frame of ankles/knees/ if you keep your balance on the little toe edge/new outside foot while aggressively tippling the new inside foot. It's also how you control your speed by setting angles before the fall line.

    • @gu5907
      @gu5907 Před 4 lety +2

      In more detail, what's happening is that he's transfering weight from the outside foot, and while he does that he shifts the balance onto the little toe edge of his inside foot. To keep this position you need good counteraction in hips, your torso pointing towards the middle of your outside boot, as well as counterbalance. Once you've done this (released outside ski and transferred weight), you retract previous outside foot under your hips, parallel to the new outside foot you now balance on the little toe edge of, and aggressively tip the new inside foot towards its edges and counteract/counterbalance in the opposite direction. Since you set yourself up for success in the transition, the outside foot will roll into it's big toe edges as a response to the inside foot initiation. That's why skiing is'nt about the outside foot, it's ALWAYS about proper inside foot management and inside body mechanics (counteraction/cb)

      @TD6297 Před 4 lety

      @@gu5907 Ok, cool, thanks. I find that I sometimes need to consciously tip the inside knee a bit to get quickly into the next turn, but wasn't sure if that was a "crutch" that worked for me or if it is an actual thing to incorporate into the movements.

    • @trouts4444
      @trouts4444 Před 4 lety +1

      If you watch of a lot of the video at CZcams slow speed 97% of the time the inside leg move is not there. It does not look like a move for staying in good balance. It does not seem like something to count on when running rough terrain or a chewed up race course. It might be something he purposefully brings out occasionally on specific turns and conditions but could as easily be something he does to offset a prior mistake like too much mass inside.

    Who's the coach? All the Croatian skiers I've seen since Janica Kostelic have all been like SUPER technically proficient. This really makes me want to ski slalom again. Not sure how I feel about Head's slalom skis though. They are definitely the dampest slalom skis ever which is technically impressive but I'm missing some of that pop. Anyone know if Atomic FIS slalom skis have a bit more pop out of the turn?

    • @Triggerboy62
      @Triggerboy62  Před 3 lety +1

      Coach name is Goran Vidovic.
      My experience of Head skis are the same as yours, super damp. However, Matejs skis are top of the line Head WC skis not available to skiers outside the WC teams. Hard to say how damp they are. We like the standard Atomic FIS skis as we are not WC skiers. Here is a video that might interest you from us testing skis: czcams.com/video/ZfpFNM2VYLA/video.html

      @@Triggerboy62 Oh my gosh thank you! Yeah I figured the skis he was on weren't likely to be the same as the mass produced ones. When I was racing our coach made it very clear to us the only similarity between WC skis and the ones we could buy were the graphics on top. =)
