Jesus taught love. Republicans teach hate,
If candidates are being supported from the pulpit, then why on earth are those churches still enjoying their tax-exempt status?
And that's the exact rational & justification of leading congratulations to believe that the church is under attack. It's not the church under attack. It's the leadership being scrutinized & having to be accountable for how their "donations" are being spent. How can any Christian support and vote for Trump. He has NO Christian values!
I am going to read this book, its really resonates with me. I was a Christ follower since age 21 (now 73) Like many I was so appalled with so called Christianity. This young man is soooooo right on. We need to pray for us to become really authentic...maybe this will be the end result. Let us pray!
He probably can’t even read a single sentence of the Bible without someone telling him what it says and means he’s the definition of a hypocrite
He quoted the Bible verse name incorrectly. With speaking something so basic to know let's me know he knows nothing.
I recall as a new Christian entering a Christian bookstore for the very first time and seeing so many Rush Limbaugh books on the shelf. It was very confusing and disturbing; how could Christians embrace a man like that?!
Same way the Christians launched the Crusades w/ the sanction of the church.
Just going in to a hobby lobby there are books by every sort of con artist, assininne always wrong prophet grifter, and general knuckle head. Those well studied theologist of the Duck Dynasty have a whole series of christian books.
Remember, not everyone who calls themselves Christians are actually Christians. A Christian is a follow of Christ. That means you follow his teachings, his commands, and doctrine. So, that word Christian is used very lightly. The Bible says by their fruit, or works, you will know them. If a person is living their life contrary to what christ teaches, then clearly, we have to say otherwise. We would not say a person is not a alcoholic if every time we see him/her, they are drunk.

It seems that evangelicals are causing more trouble for Jesus’ church because of their blatant hypocrisy following a leader that is constantly lying and deceiving people. I think they have been brainwashed by right wing media. I don’t recognize evangelicals anymore. They are more of a political action committee than a church. What’s going through Trump’s mind in all these pictures is ”god, these guys are suckers!”

Evangelism has nothing to do with religion or Christianity. It’s about control. They just want to be able to make conservative rules. They claim their beliefs are based on scriptures, but; they cherry-pick them. The bottom line is they don’t believe in separation between church and state.
Or is it possible that they DO believe in Church and State, and see politics infringing on people's rights? (agreed about Evangelism, but maybe for vanity than control. )

Great quote!
I've always figured my relationship with Christ is between me and Him. Seeing all this craziness coming out of so many churches confirms it. The transactional relationship that you discussed nailed it. This ain't the America we grew up in. Also, if someone had come up to me at my Daddy's funeral with some kind of nonsense like that I'd've been losing my religion real fast.
Our relationship with God is between Him and ourselves. I am a devout Catholic, do I think my Church is perfect - no way. Churches - whatever your denomination or for that matter your Deity, are led by humans. Some priests, pastors, leaders, are extremely wise, loving and caring of mankind, but sadly other's see their religion as a power trip, and some of the drivvle they espouse has absolutely nothing in keeping with Christ's teachings or God's love for us. In the Christian context, God represents Love and Forgiveness and that is a two-way street. I do understand your concerns about theocratic craziness. When it comes to Nationalistic Evangelicals - I honestly think they need to review their relationship with God. Based on some of their comments they are weaponising the Bible - and not for God's sake.
Thank you Tim for your insightful thoughts about Christian extremism. I'm looking for your book now.
Becoming a Christian through the church is the same as Muslims being taught to recite the Quran w/ no idea what it means...
Religion is supposed to be a personal guide to live your life as a better person ... not to wield your beliefs as a weapon against everyone else 😈
Well said.
Unfortunately, very few people seem to use it for that purpose; those that do, do it quietly and privately.
After a year or two of Sunday School, I went to church at the age of 11. Only went a few times and decided I didn't want to be somewhere where people talked about others behind their backs. I didn't know the word hypocrite at the time, but that's what they were. My guidelines for life are "treat other people as you would like to be treated" and "walk a mile in someone's shoes before you comment." Many others have discovered the same path.
2000 years of history would suggest otherwise. Christianity has been spread by the sword along with Islam. The Romans had tolerance for local beliefs, until they turned to Christianity and then they slaughtered everyone who didn't join their new cult.
In Europe, we have had 2000 years of oppression, wars, slavery and genocide at the hands of Christians. Even when they are caught red-handed, like the Holocaust, which was Christians Germans killing Jews for not being Christians they rewrite history and I was taught at school they were atheists killing Jews. Now I can read Hitler's speeches and see he talks about God and Jesus in every single speech and said
"We tolerate no one in our ranks who attacks the ideas of Christianity. Our movement is Christian." in 1928.
Fascism was a far-right Christian movement and those Christians believed they were getting rid of undesirables, just like Trump says he wants to do. He even named "atheists" in a recent speech about who he will remove from the USA, along with communists etc. He sounds exactly like Hitler.
Actually, the body of Christ is his church. We are supposed to gather in communion with one another. So, attending church is important and mentioned all over the New Testament

Since Jesus and God are made up stories from the past what would stop people from making up stories today? Nothing stops them. A truth teller
Thank you Tim Alberta for speaking up. TRUTH. SHAME on the church. This man is a true Christian.
I grew up Methodist and both my parents were involved in the church, close friends that were the clergy. As I got older and i too realized how many hypocrites were in my church. I have a strong faith that is personal but i too, am no longer involved in a church. Agree with you. Sorry you were confronted at your dad's funeral.
Jephthah had a strong personal faith too. Judges 11:30
If you weren't introduced to it or indoctrinated as a young child you would never seek it out. Because it's not real it's just a thought in your head and you're afraid to let it go
I read the Atlantic article, and it’s mind-blowing that the author’s father, who was educated and successful in business before becoming a minister, would spiral down the rabbit hole of a quasi-religion turned cult. As the author himself admits, his father brought this upon the son by welcoming and cultivating these crazies within the church he founded. I applaud the author for standing true to his own beliefs, and refusing to be bullied by a cult mob. If America’s experience in democracy fails, it will have been brought down by “religion”.
Most wars are fought over religion 😢.
I've noticed a lot of my Christian friends losing faith in their belief system lately. I think the fact that I'm pretty blunt about my lack of belief makes them feel more comfortable about not being judged or attacked for this. This is basically what it looks like when the separation between church and state breaks down. Atheists don't really recruit other Atheists. I've had these friends for a very long time (some for 20+ years). Their extremist families and friends do. And they don't respect the beliefs of others even if those beliefs are derived from the same book.
Some Atheists are closer to the truth in knowing God is not real to them than an unsaved religious person with a make-believe belief. Unsaved religious people only know their own faith, not His faith which will cause a person to believe. See Rom 3:3, Gal 2:16 KJV.
America’s culture would be better if we focused on Character, rather than “Celebrity”
Yes!
@jaygoren815 So Bill Clinton never should have been President and we got it right on Hillary
Even this spouting Trump is doing is just a celebrity playing up to a crowd to rile them up and support him further, it's a benefit so he does it he's a business man after so knows how to sell a proposal.
To say organized religion is a farce is not an attack on religion, it’s a perspective.
A distorted perspective at that.
Religion is delusion.
It is what they teach in most colleges now days. They attack family, country and religion. IF those can be torn down that leaves the government to take care of you. This is what the democrats are trying hard to do. They want control and those three other groups must go.

Well said, Tim Alberta.
Tim Alberta you can't steal my scene name "NOTBORNAGAINBORNRIGHT" Thank you for standing up and saying NO!
I haven't left the church but feel the same way. My church doesn't outwardly back Trump but neither do they address the hatred and vitriol that is so anti-Christian. Too many of them feel like the end justifies the means in order to get political power - no matter what they have to do to get it. It's horrible!
So you remain, allowing evil to take control. How do you feel about being complicit? To sit with others that you don’t agree with and smile and nod so that they feel you are with them. YOU are the problem.
If that is your church, it's not much of one.

The first thing I did when Trump was elected was write a letter to the largest churches in the country warning them about Trump. I tried to sound sane. I begged each of them to consider speaking out against Trump. I never heard from them
Powerful organized religions usually attach themselves to right wing populist political movement. This gives the movements legitimacy and allows the church to claim the states authority.
The Catholic Church did this in the 1930's with the rising fascists in Germany, Italy, and Spain. And later with Pinochet in Chile.
And it's happening in America now.

I respect Tim’s take on current issues. Smart guy. Personally, separation of church and state please. Keep your religion and proselytizing under your own roof.
Ffs, it even says that you're supposed to keep religious doctrine separate from human law, _in the Bible itself._
He will use every kind of evil deception to fool those on their way to destruction, because they refuse to love and accept the truth that would save them. So God will cause them to be greatly deceived, and they will believe these lies. Then they will be condemned for enjoying evil rather than believing the truth.

The mental gymnastics it takes to believe Trump is the last hope to save Christianity is just astounding. You really have to look hard to find anyone less representative of Christ's teachings - love, tolerance, concern for all people as our brothers, honesty, humility. Not even close.
Trump uses them, and they allow it.
Because their shared agenda is about money and control not peace and love - neither of them are actual christians with so called christian values

What can save the churches is right in front of their face. There is a song called. They’ll know we are Christians by our love. We haven’t seen much love from the churches lately. Maybe they should pick up on that a little bit.
