Remember, not everyone who calls themselves Christians are actually Christians. A Christian is a follow of Christ. That means you follow his teachings, his commands, and doctrine. So, that word Christian is used very lightly. The Bible says by their fruit, or works, you will know them. If a person is living their life contrary to what christ teaches, then clearly, we have to say otherwise. We would not say a person is not a alcoholic if every time we see him/her, they are drunk.

Our relationship with God is between Him and ourselves. I am a devout Catholic, do I think my Church is perfect - no way. Churches - whatever your denomination or for that matter your Deity, are led by humans. Some priests, pastors, leaders, are extremely wise, loving and caring of mankind, but sadly other's see their religion as a power trip, and some of the drivvle they espouse has absolutely nothing in keeping with Christ's teachings or God's love for us. In the Christian context, God represents Love and Forgiveness and that is a two-way street. I do understand your concerns about theocratic craziness. When it comes to Nationalistic Evangelicals - I honestly think they need to review their relationship with God. 2000 years of history would suggest otherwise. Christianity has been spread by the sword along with Islam. The Romans had tolerance for local beliefs, until they turned to Christianity and then they slaughtered everyone who didn't join their new cult.
In Europe, we have had 2000 years of oppression, wars, slavery and genocide at the hands of Christians. Even when they are caught red-handed, like the Holocaust, which was Christians Germans killing Jews for not being Christians they rewrite history and I was taught at school they were atheists killing Jews. Now I can read Hitler's speeches and see he talks about God and Jesus in every single speech and said
"We tolerate no one in our ranks who attacks the ideas of Christianity. Our movement is Christian." in 1928.
Fascism was a far-right Christian movement and those Christians believed they were getting rid of undesirables, just like Trump says he wants to do. He even named "atheists" in a recent speech about who he will remove from the USA, along with communists etc. He sounds exactly like Hitler.

I read the Atlantic article, and it’s mind-blowing that the author’s father, who was educated and successful in business before becoming a minister, would spiral down the rabbit hole of a quasi-religion turned cult. As the author himself admits, his father brought this upon the son by welcoming and cultivating these crazies within the church he founded. I applaud the author for standing true to his own beliefs, and refusing to be bullied by a cult mob. If America’s experience in democracy fails, it will have been brought down by “religion”.

I've noticed a lot of my Christian friends losing faith in their belief system lately. I think the fact that I'm pretty blunt about my lack of belief makes them feel more comfortable about not being judged or attacked for this. This is basically what it looks like when the separation between church and state breaks down. Atheists don't really recruit other Atheists. I've had these friends for a very long time (some for 20+ years). Their extremist families and friends do. And they don't respect the beliefs of others even if those beliefs are derived from the same book.
