  • In this video we look at the process of embossing leather. We look at various different methods used to put a pattern or texture on to the surface of plain veg-tanned leather. We look at using small items, including a makerโ€™s mark stamp, wax seal stamps and everyday objects to add a simple design to the leatherโ€™s surface. We then look at using embossing folders to texture larger pieces of leather. We show the use of the Sizzix Big Shot Pro die cutting and embossing machine.

    I almost can't believe I found this. I have been paper crafting for years and have many, many embossing folders, dies, stamps and inks. I have a Sizzix Big Shot Plus. I recently purchased small leather labels for quilting labels (I also sew) and was searching for how to make them myself. Bingo, I can do this with what I already have. Thanks so much for sharing your craft.

    Oh my goodness! Thank you so much for your video. I have all the tools I need to do this and can't wait to play. I have been paper crafting for years, but have also been sewing for years so I have a Kamsnaps snap press with flat attachments I can use instead of an arbor press. I was first thinking of using my little mini vise grip, which would be a super inexpensive tool to get for this. That's when I realized my snap press would work so well. The sky is the limit as long as you have flat stock. If you have a bench vise with brass jaws, it would work. Arbor presses can range from 1,000 pounds to 50,000 tons of pressing power. You wallet will determine what you purchase. If a local repair shops close or mechanics shop, these item are common tools and bidding at a live auction can be fun. Just donโ€™t get carried away. If you weld, or know someone who does, simple shapes can be cut, welded on outside corners (Making it Easy to Dress by Grinding) or put a consistent sharpe edge on the pieces. You can emboss as long a practice with the leather you will use provides the results desired. Nice job introducing use to this decorative leather making style! Thanks.

    I am so pleased to have found this tutorial, because I have this Big Shot Pro too and have searched the Sizzix videos, Spellbinders, Tim Holtz and Eileen Hull videos without finding the most effective sandwich to cut my leather. It would just not go through and 'bite'. You have explained it perfectly and shown the sandwich in clear detail, much appreciated. It's taken a Geordie to show a Mackem how to do it! Incidentally, I've been die cutting cardstock reasonably okay with my Bigz dies but when it comes to leather, the scoreboards are cutting through the scored areas too so wondering what the best sandwich is...

    Hi! Iโ€™m Erica from the US! I just happened to see this on CZcams & I was so excited to see you using card-making supplies! Never in a million years would I have thought that I could use leather in my crafts! I have dozens of embossing folders including the newer 3-D ones, hundreds of dies & both of the exact models of die cutters that you used! I have quite a few of the thicker steel rule dies, too! And now that Iโ€™m thinking about it, I have always read that they could be used with leather, I just never thought about following through on that, though! I own lots of wax seals, also, so Iโ€™m in good shape there, also! Iโ€™m going to look on Amazon for leather, I believe you used a 2mm thickness, so I can probably try this in a couple of days! Haha, this is amazing! And with the new 3-D folders, we even give the card stock a quick spray of water for the same suggestion: to soften the paper fibers! Now we have been told (by Tim Holtz, the Ranger/Sizzix guru) to run those embossing folders 3 times through the machine. Perhaps you have experimented with those folders, too? I have โ€œliked & subscribedโ€ (& since Iโ€™m very active on CZcams perhaps more people will see you because of my activity!) Thank you so much, I have a whole lot of new ideas to try & I will look for more videos now! Ericaโค

      Hi. You just treat the leather like any other piece of veg tan. You can dye it just as normal and apply whatever finish you like to it.

    Just found your channel, and it's a gold mine! I'm very new to leather, in fact, I really don't work in leather, but am making small leather items from finished leather. I'm learning the hard way that you can't use a metal leather stamp on finished leather, no matter how hard you pound. But all I have is finished leather! a LOT of it! Do I heat up the metal stamp and use an Arbor Press? Should I wet the finished leather first?

    • @HobbyBloxs
      @HobbyBloxs  Pล™ed 3 lety +2

      Hi. Iโ€™m assuming by โ€˜finished leatherโ€™ you mean upholstery leather. The type used to make sofas? If so, then this type of leather has been tanned chemically and generally canโ€™t be โ€˜tooledโ€™ ( It canโ€™t be stamped, carved or otherwise worked with leather tools.) You need natural veg-tanned leather if you want to tool it. Hope this helps.

      @HobbyBloxs  Pล™ed 4 lety

      Hi. The thickness would be depend on the design. A key fob folds two layers, whereas a key strap is a single layer. As a general rule, I'd say the finished thickness should be around 3-4mm thick. I'm in the UK and I buy my leather from LePrevo Leather.

    • @HobbyBloxs
      @HobbyBloxs  Pล™ed 4 lety

      Hi. It sounds like you are not using a high enough temperature. I suggest you use some scraps of the leather and try using higher temperatures until you get a good impression. You may also need to apply more pressure or hold it for a little longer. It's all experimentation, I'm afraid. When you find the perfect settings for that type of leather, write it down and keep it for future work. Hope this helps.

    Hi Geordie, thanks for the advice on the plastic embossing plates, I have looked at those in the craft shops and wondered if the would be ok on Leather, now I know. Also good idea on the paper cutting dies as well, I shall give that a go.
    I have had very good success with some embossing small items with salvaged items from building sites, much like the metal plates you have, although I dont have a mangle like yours, although that is a cool idea. I simply used some plywood offcuts to provide the hard surface and using some quick clamps to provide the pressure, and left for a while to take the form. A simple and cheap alternative for novice crafters such as myself.
    I have also had good results with using rubber card making stamps and Archival ink for personalising, and embellising some pieces
    Are there any other alternative tools, or techniques that you use? Perhaps if so, it could be a good video to share.

    Hi ! that cutting machine seems really expensive to me because of how limited it is, I use a press from the bookbindery and I can say that it has several uses, in addition to the fact that I only spent 100 euros on it as it was bought at a flea market, and if you allow me a little advice! when you want to make embossing, put a 1 or 2 millimeter cardboard sheet under the piece of leather, the impression will come out much more pronounced and beautiful because the stamp will not meet the hard surface under the leather but will have a small layer where it sinks
    oh, and one more thing, be careful with metal models!!! if the model is made of stainless steel, it's ok. but if it's made of iron! attention that the iron oxidizes immediately on the wet piece of leather and a blackish impression will remain, at least I experienced this and I calmed down... in the best case you can put a thin piece of nylon like the one to wrap

    • @HobbyBloxs
      @HobbyBloxs  Pล™ed 2 lety +2

      Hi. Yes, that's right: When you deboss, the design is pressed below the surface. When you emboss, the area around the design is pressed below the surface - giving the illusion that the design is raised. I hope this helps.
