Tensions mounting in Moldova amid war in Ukraine | DW News

  • Moldova was the first country after the collapse of the Soviet Union in which Russia supported separatists, provoking a bloody war that lasted for several months in 1992. The result was a frozen conflict, with pro-Moscow forces ruling Transnistria, a narrow strip of land in the east of Moldova that is home to many Russian speakers, for more than three decades. About 2,000 Russian soldiers are still stationed there. Concerns have been raised in Moldova as a result of ongoing economic hardship among the population - and the war in Ukraine.

Republic of Moldova is simply the eastern half of Romania's Moldova region (which is much larger), invaded by USSR in 1940, thus drawing Romania in WW2 on the Axis side. But the official language in Republic of Moldova is still Romanian! 82% of its population is Romanian and speaks Romanian as it's mother tongue. They study "ROMANIAN language and literature" and "History of ROMANIANS" as compulsory subjects in Moldovan schools. In fact, Principality of Moldova became in 1859 a founding member of Romania when it decided to unify with Wallachia, under a MOLDOVAN prince! About 50% of the population of Republic of Moldova have applied for and received Romanian citizenship, arguing that their forefathers have lost it unjustly during Soviet occupation. Not only does Republic of Moldova and Romania have the same flag, but they had the same anthem as well until 1994!

The majority of the people in those territories, now separate countries, do not want anything to do with Russia so the latter fosters and promotes conflict by supporting the minority that does. Eventually it will declare that minority to be oppressed, support them financially then militarily and then finally move in and illegally annex the country back into the motherland. The current iteration of this is happening in Ukraine.

Unification with NATO member Romania would solve Moldova's problem. Russian forces in Transnistria would have to leave, or be considered a hostile incursion, allowing Romania to invoke article 5.

As a moldovan I can inform you that the protesters are mostly old and/or joblesspeople, who are being taken advantage of by the thief Ilan Shor because of their unfortunate financial situations. Those people are participating in these "protests" for financial reasons, as they are rounded up from villages and are being paid 10 to 50 dollars for their presence.

Moldova actually is very corrupt and poor and nothing will change if it’s controlled by Russia or a corrupt Moldovan government and regardless of what happens the government will always be corrupt

Unfortunately if things turn bad in moldova, we'd really have to assist them as well. Being that they neighbour ukraine if the russians take over Moldova, it gives them another angle for attack on ukraine and would greatly increase the chances of being surrounded and with the amount of investment in ukraines defence it's not something the west will want to give up on. The best chance they have to prevent this is by working with the Ukranian government and seeing if they can squeeze transnistria from both sides flushing out the russians stationed there.

You are wrong, russians could not take over Moldova but they could try to change actual government and have a pro-russian government there. Moldova is surrounded by Ukraine and Romania, no Russian plane and boat could enter there! Their only available men are 1500 Russian soldiers in Transnistria and some thousands from separatist militias.

Anybody in Moldova, who likes Russia, can move to Russia.
It's anyway only the usual "older generation" who lived already as an adult in Soviet times in the provinces. Not much to say, used to keep mouth shut, guaranteed low level income and below average work requirements. Similar "nostalgia" in all Eastern Europe, with simple minded people around 60 and older - to be honest, the easiest solution is the natural one - at some point in the near future they die.

I'm in Moldova right now. Arrived here by train from Kyiv like a month ago. Except for a few protests nothing serious is going on. These protests are small in numbers, like 4-5,000 people. Not a serious threat to the stability of the country. Besides, it doesn't make any sense for the Russians to open another front far from their main forces. They have only 1,500 troops in Transnistria.
