New Caledonia: What is behind the deadly unrest in the French Pacific territory? | DW News

  • A state of emergency has been declared in the French pacific territory of New Caledonia in an attempt to quell unrest that has left five people dead, including two police officers. Plans over new voting rules from French lawmakers prompted the latest violence.
The former French colony became an overseas territory after World War two. It has rejected independence in referendums three times, but the cause retains strong support among the indigenous Kanak people.

No, the reason why is because France had just done a vaccine rollout, and they did their overseas departments (New Caledonia, French Guinea, Tahiti etc) BEFORE Metropolitan France because the government knew that the locals there needed the vaccines more.
This made the French government hugely popular for a moment of time with the people of New Caledonia and the independence parties knew this, which is why they chose not to vote knowing they would lose in a landslide, and decided to save face by boycotting. Draw a line through the middle, the southwest side stays French, and the northeast side becomes independent. People who would rather live on the other side of the island can move. There, problem solved.
In the American Revolution, a lot of people were loyalists. When the revolution ended and the patriots won, the loyalists didn't leave North America, they just moved to Canada. The emigration of loyalists during the American Revolution is why Canada and the United States are different countries, and why the majority of Canadians speak English instead of French today.

There were 3 times referendum to get independent if they wanted - all 3 times they voted to stay part of France. Now, some are upset that French people who lived their for 10 years could vote. Lots of strange comments here. Some people need to be educated.

Yeah let's not immediatly crucify france for not giving independence to a colony that voted 3 times to stay a colony. I'm all for independence to all nations but a lot of times these colonial areas actually receive more money from the government than they produce. I'm going to need more information to make up my mind. Maybe it really is just a bunch of hooligans.
