  • Violent Anti-France Protests break out in its Territory of New Caledonia | Vantage with Palki Sharma
Violent protests broke out in the French overseas territory of New Caledonia. Reports say over 50 police officers were injured and businesses and cars were burnt down. More than 80 protesters have been arrested and a curfew has been imposed in New Caledonia. The protests are in response to a new rule being debated in the French Assembly. France had frozen voting rights in New Caledonia back in 1998. This was to ensure that immigrants would not politically outnumber New Caledonia's indigenous Melanesian Kanak people. But now, France wants to undo the voting freeze, and the voting power of the indigenous Kanak people might get reduced overnight.

It's one thing when a colony willingly (and under NO duress) opts for its independence or to maintain its status a territory (see Puerto Rico and the USA). However when the occupying nation (France) refuses to recognize and comply with said colony's wish for independence (New Caledonia), that's quite another issue. Matters get worse with horrendous consequences all around when the occupier resorts to forcible action to squelch the independence movement. A good example, but evidently not well learned lesson, is France's post WWII forcible reacquistion of Vietnam--> French Indochina from Japan after Japanese capitulation! I believe French and later U.S. military action there spanned roughly 30 years (1946-1975). The French return in 1946 to reclaim their "empire". They lost Laos in 1949 and Cambodia in 1953 but insisted on maintaining Vietnam. There, they were defeated by Viet-Minh forces at Dien Bien Phu in 1954. Then the U.S. began its "intervention" policies in the 1950s to address the rise of "communism". It all culminated later on to the withdrawal of U.S. forces and the Fall of Saigon in 1975 (to NVA & VC forces) allowing Vietam to reunify and to gain its independence. France should really play it smart and give New Caledonia its independence without bloodshed and intrigue and maintain positive relations not vitriol. Why resort to blood shed and destruction to satisfy foolish and short sighted international prestige?

Where is the difference that matters betwen France occupying the land of native people in New Caledonia and Zionsim occupying the land of native people in Palestine besides the genocide in Palestine. Colonialism is racism no matter who, not matter where, no matter when.
Yesterday I watched a YT video about a French general calling for France, Europe and the US to recolonize Africa.

Now Kanaks don't want a change in the electoral system who ban to vote who don't live there before 1988.. Now 20000 kanaks decide for 300000 caledonians, who pay taxes but they can't vote. is it right for you?

The 3 referendum were all organized by France instead of a 3rd neutral party. The Kanaks should have never agreed to a referendum. They should have followed Algeria's example. The referendum were to materialize 30 years after the Kanak insurrection in 1988 which gives France the time to change the demographics profile of the colony and dilute the votes of the indigenous people. France has a lot of tricks up its sleeves when it comes to holding on to territories that is not theirs.

Like NZ there were critical agreements between Kanaks and France: the Matignon Accords and Noumea Agreement. It was an agreement about how to determine independence. There were three referenda. Each time voters rejected independence. There is a radical group of Kanaks who have always rejected any French presence. They assassinated over successive years the mainstream Kanak leaders who negotiated the agreements.
Politics is about compromise. Radicals do not compromise regardless of whether the French are there or not. If all the French and non-indigenous left New Caledonia (this is a ludicrous scenario BTW as most have no other home) there would simply be a civil war between Kanaks. Russia and/or China would likely back the radicals (they already are doing this, but that is another story) and use their influence to secure rights over New Caledonia’s natural resources (nickel especially).
