  • Drone explores the abandoned Newcastle General Hospital site on Westgate Road, Newcastle. For many years this was the main hospital for the city of Newcastle. It closed on 16th November 2023 and is now boarded up and overgrown with weeds.
The hospital was closed and the majority of services transferred to the city's other two hospitals, the Royal Victoria Infirmary and the Freeman Hospital. The Accident and Emergency Department and Intensive Care closed on 16 November 2010.
    History
The hospital was originally constructed as the infirmary for the Newcastle Union Workhouse. Building began in 1868 and it opened in 1870. In 1921 the administration of the hospital was separated from the Workhouse and the name was changed to the Wingrove Hospital. In 1948 the name was changed to the Newcastle General Hospital when it became part of the National Health Service.
The Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust reorganised the way it provided acute and tertiary health care in the city and most of the acute services at the hospital were moved to the Freeman Hospital and the Royal Victoria Infirmary between 2008 and 2010. The remaining land is being made available for commercial development, the building of a science park (as part of the Newcastle Science City initiative) and the further development of Newcastle University’s "Campus for Ageing and Vitality". Newcastle University bought the site in 2019 and plans to develop the UK's first health innovation neighbourhood.

I worked there from 1995 to 2003 when we were moved to cobalt. At 1:55 was our old IT accomodation. So sad to see this left to ruin.

Did much of my training there in the 90s. Sad to see it looking neglected, but it was always a bit ropey!

Went In when I was 8 years old as I had fallen of a lorry in 1953, my grandmother died in there after removal of gallstones, a year after she had her cataracts removed. It was called the death works in my family for years as we lived in Stanhope Street, its was the closest hospital. Then my daughter trained there as a radiographer. What is it going to be now? Some property developers will make plenty out of that site,I'll bet!

Thank you for sharing your story. Newcastle University own some of the site but the other will go to Housing or retail I suspect.
