Today I'm hiking Millstream Gardens to Silver Mines in Missouri. This Missouri hiking trail is a strong contender for one of my new Top 5 favorite Missouri hiking trails. Along this 5.6 mile out and back trail I experience Tiemann Shut-Ins on the St. Francis River, Silver Mine Dam, and the abandoned Einstein Mine, which was mined for silver, tungsten, and lead from 1877 to 1946.

If you're new to hiking in Missouri, "shut-in" is the regional name for when a river or broader stream is “shut in” to a narrow canyon-like valley. Shut-ins are characterized by large boulders in the water that create various shoots, small waterfalls, and pools. Playing in the various shut-ins throughout the state is a classic Missouri past time.
The St. Francis River is the only river in Missouri considered to have white water. Tiemann Shut-Ins is an excellent example of this. In Spring months when the water is high Millstream Gardens is a popular spot for kayakers and other water enthusiasts.
Both Millstream Gardens and Silver Mines Recreation Area are located in the Mark Twain National Forest, which resides in the St. Francois Mountains. The igneous rocks are mostly rhyolite, which were formed when the region had active volcanoes millions of years ago.

Have you hiked from Millstream Gardens to Silver Mines? This might be one of my new Top 5 Missouri hiking trails.
Beautiful sport, well edited - background music flows with the water behind, very peaceful, keep hiking bro !!
Thank you! Really appreciate this. I’ll keep getting out there. Hope you do too!
I'VE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS! Glad to hear its a contender for your top 5 spot. I'm really looking forward to checking this place out in the summer because I've only seen it in the winter too.
It’s an awesome hike! I’m sure in the summer and fall it’s even more spectacular. I’ll admit it do like hiking in the winter because no leaves mean better views, but with this trail it might be mute. But no bugs/humidity is always a plus haha
Oh, by the way…. Most of the rocks and boulders you are looking at are volcanic rhyolite (sort of a fine grained granite). The St. Francois Mountains are some of the oldest Mountains in the U.S. They are about 1.5 billion years old. Three times older than the Appalachians and ten times older than the Rockies.
I know! I've learned a lot about rhyolite since I started hiking in Missouri. It's pretty amazing how old the St. Francois Mountains are, and that they used to be a volcano chain
I love that area. Fellow St. Louisian here. 🖐 When I was a kid the entrance to the mines wasn't closed off and you could go back around 100 yards.
Whoa! going back into the mines would have been super cool. thanks for watching!
Great video footage! Beautiful place. Watched the kayak races in early 80's
Thank you! Really appreciate it. In my research I learned about the kayaking races as well there’s a race coming up mid march which looks super cool
In that area is another hike you might like: Lower Rock Creek.
And come watch the kayak races.
Thanks for the Lower Rock Creek suggestion! I'll put it on my to do. And I learned about the kayak races this March. If I can swing it, I'd love to see it in person
And Black Mountain Falls right down HWY-E from Lower Rock Creek.
Looks fantastic. I haven't tried this trail yet. I really appreciate you uploading your experience with it!
Of course! It’s a pretty awesome trail. One of my new favorites
Hello Michael Shepard Jordan! Nice work on the video. You provide great information and details. The scenery is amazing as well!. I have never done this hike, I am going to send this to my hiking club here in St. Louis The Fat Stoner Babes. My kind of rock climbing too! I am very tempted to sit and binge watch all your videos today.
Hi Deanna! Glad you like the video. I really appreciate you sharing it with The Fat Stoner Babes (excellent name btw). This trail is pretty amazing. I hope you can make it down there soon! Keep climbing!!!
Excellent video. A buddy of mine and I plan to hike and fish it in late May / early June. I've hiked Silver Mines, but never ventured towards Millstream. Thank you for the video.
Thank you. Millstream was pretty awesome. The shut-ins there are top notch
Looks super cool 😎 great Job!
It was super cool! Thank you for watching
I really enjoy the quick location at start of video. I am planning a trip out from VA. Planning on hiking and camping for a week or so before eclipse so really enjoying your trails vides for where I can go. Thanks
Glad it helped! You’re going to love Millstream Gardens to Silver Mines. One of my top 5 hiking trails in Missouri. Enjoy your trip!
Hi Michael. Thanks for sharing this awesome place and trail. I really enjoyed following along. It’s a real chill hike. I like your impromptu to bouldering; fun, and that silver mine was cool too. I just stumbled across your channel while searching for interesting hikes. I do lots of hiking and posting on CZcams myself. I looked through your channel, and it looks like you post lots of hikes and adventures. Right up my alley. I just followed your channel! Woohoo!!! I look forward to staying connected.
Thanks for watching! I’m glad you enjoyed. It’s a pretty awesome Missouri hike. Maybe one of my Top 5 I’ve found. I’m excited to check your channel and see your adventures. And thank you for the bouldering love. The climber in me can’t pass up a good one 😂
@@MichaelShepherdJordan Hahaha. Yeah, I know the type. I have some friends I hike with that love bouldering and are always on the lookout for some climbable boulders on our routes. They've gotten me to try a few of them too. Fun times.
Climbing just seems to be the natural progression from hiking. I’ve been climbing for 2yrs and I love it.
@@MichaelShepherdJordan Yeah, its true.
You might also try the Ozark Trail from Marble Creek to Crane Lake and the Hughes Mountain Trail.
Thank you for the suggestions! I'd love to through-hike the OT one day. I've hiked Devil's Honeycomb and loved it! So sad it's burning right now.

It’s burning? Are the wildfires in that area?
I was wrong about the wildfires being on Hughes Mountain. It was Pilot Knob. My mistake

Glad you made it down! Hit me up if you are ever interested in riding in the front of my Duo. Kayak races there 3/16/24 as long as we get water.

Me too! Thank you. And I may just take you up on that but I haven’t been in a kayak in decades lol. I did learn about the race in March though which is awesome.
@@MichaelShepherdJordan No experience is necessary. I take people down that have never been in a kayak. Total blast! I'll message you if we ever get the right river level and warm temps.
Nice! Sounds good.
Dan,
Have you been down Marble Creek recently?
I have not. What’s it like down there?
