@@MichaelShepherdJordan No that is nice too but the scour trail head is down towards the shut ins but runs up to Taum Sauk. There is also another connector trail there. Pretty nice trail highly recommended. One way though out and back unless coordinating cars.
@@MichaelShepherdJordan You were heading towards it on the OT past the devils toll gate but 12 miles. I would usually go out 5 or 6 then back from either way. def do the scour up though
I ran the Devil's Toll half marathon from Taum Sauk to Johnson Shut-ins thru the scour field. Without a doubt the most physically challenging half I've ever done. I love our trails, especially in the late fall and winter. The views across the hills and ridges when the leaves are down are pure eye candy. Thanks for your great videos; I'm sure they inspire others to go exploring the beauty that is Missouri.
Missouri isn't the most awe inspiring state as far as it's natural beauty goes, but it's got a lot of hidden gems if you know where to look and know what you're looking at. Thanks for taking folks with you to see them.
I’m with you there. When I moved to Missouri I wasn’t expecting much but the more I explore the more I find all the gems the state has to offer, which is a lot. Thank you for watching!
I really like the quick location clip in the beginning of the video. I am looking to come out from Virginia and do some hiking and camping and discovered your videos they are a big help since I am not from the area.. Thank You
A fantastic day hike for sure and definitely within my top 3 I've done in Missouri (others are Council Bluff and Bell Mountain.) I'm jealous you got out there during this surprisingly mild November weather, good on you. You might try the Mina Sauk loop from the Russell Mountain trailhead sometime, it's got some more OT miles and a few very pretty glades. You're right that Taum Sauk is unimpressive, but just think about the fact that you're hiking across some of the oldest terrain on earth. It's thought that Taum Sauk and the other St. Francois peaks (Bell, Buford, Russell etc.) are just about the only areas on North America never to have been below sea level. Those mountains were old before the Rockies or even the Appalachians even existed. That is why they are so small yet so rugged - those rocks have seen and withstood a lot. I'm in awe every time I am down there.
In doing my research for the blog post I read about the mountains never being submerged which is kind of wild. It’s very cool to walk across so much history. I’ve done the Russell Mountain to Taum Sauk hike (made a video too). It’s spectacular as well. And Bell Mountain is for sure in my Top 5 Missouri trails as well! Thanks for watching and Happy Thanksgiving!
For sure! I knew going into it I probably wasn’t going to get a good fall, but still worth the trip! I’ll have to head back in Spring. Thanks for watching!
Thank you! I have a Sony a6400 with a 16-55mm kit lens on it for the main shots. My drone is a DJI Mini 2. I shot everything 4k in raw and edit/color correction in Adobe Premiere Pro. Are you thinking of filming some of your own hikes? I started with my iPhone.
@@MichaelShepherdJordan Hello! Yes I want to start filming some. I am a photographer who makes a living as a realtor in the KC area. I also have a FB hiking group in KC with about 1100 member so we hike weekly. If you are ever in KC and want to go hiking, let me know!
@@Fyfferealestateteam We need to be friends haha. I'm a photographer who also makes a living as a realtor, but in the St. Louis area. All you need to get started with hiking videos is a phone and a tripod! I'm also an actor (mostly commercials) I was in KC on Friday for a commercial shoot. Next time I'm there I'll reach out and if we can't go on a hike, maybe we can grab a coffee! I've done two hikes in KC: Loess Bluffs and Weston Bend. I'll leave the links below if you want to check them out.
Might be a bold claim, but this is my pick for Missouri's best day hike. What do you think? What's your favorite Missouri day hike?
pretty nice or start out at the scour trail head and head up
@@marksgoogle4360 are you talking about the scout trail head at Russell Mountain? I’ve done that and it is pretty great

😮 what an epic half marathon! Congratulations to you for completing that. Seriously awesome accomplishment. I’m glad you enjoy the videos!

You have a great ability to really pull the viewer into scenery my friend! Brilliant cinematography 🔥🔥
So do you! I’m just doing my best to imitate your storytelling. Really appreciate you watching!
Awesome hike! Super fascinating information about the rock formation.
I know! Really great to have run into Devin and Adam on the trail. Thanks for watching love!
I would agree. One of the best
It’s amazing how much is in one hike

I’m glad the location clip helps! That was suggested by a subscriber. Have a great trip to Missouri. There’s a lot of beautiful trails out here!

Timing is everything. Spring on the Taum Sauk trail is spectacular after plenty of rain. The falls are roaring.

Beautiful area! We saw the water fall in April a few years ago. It was very impressive
That’s awesome! I’ve been to Mina Sauk twice and both times it was lack luster. Must bee pretty amazing when it’s flowing and cascading
Been there years ago yes love the rock formations n the shut ins stay safe 😊
I bet it’s still the same. Thanks for watching!
@@MichaelShepherdJordan thanks for sharing!

Def MO's top but continue on the Ozark it goes back up once past the creek
Yeah the OT goes a long way. I’ve hiked it to Russell Mountain but not all the way to Johnson Shut-Ins. Want to do that section one day
Great video! I am curious. What do you shoot your videos with?
