    To be perfectly honest, after Starfield, BGS has lost me forever. Despite being bitter that Starfield was the reason we had to wait more than a decade in between Elder Scrolls releases, I still held a small glint of hope. Starfield nuked it from orbit. Elder Scrolls is a dead series. 15 years in between titles is a dead franchise. The quality keeps dropping, and I'm over it.

    • @husky3g
      @husky3g Před 5 měsíci +91

      Absolutely correct. 15 years between "sequels" is a formula for failure. Bethesda thought they could ride the Skyrim train until the cows come home and now that the Skyrim train is pretty much dead because almost every person on the planet owns multiple copies of the game, they realize they've let their star franchise sit on a shelf for the better part of almost 2 decades. 2015-2018 would have been prime-time to release a new Elder Scrolls and 2025 would have been a good year to release TES VII. Instead, now we're sitting 13 years later after Skyrim and still nothing but a teaser trailer we got 6 years ago. It's hilarious how badly they've ignored TES for garbage like Starfield and Fallout 76.
      People would have accepted a mediocre TES VI a few years after Skyrim, circa 2016-2018, but now that it's been 13 years? Bethesda complains all of the time how "Morrowind saved us from bankruptcy" yet they continue to make executive decisions that put them in a terrible position. Namely, the most recent, is dedicating dozens of people to a space game that is boring, empty and designed like dogshit for almost a decade. Who even sees a space exploration game where there's nothing to explore and you can't actually fly your ship and says "Yeah, that won't piss people off, they'll love that".
      Todd the Godd needs to go. He has proven that under solely his leadership, Bethesda has lost any and all creative direction and they need someone who's strategy isn't "what can we remove" when designing games like The Elder Scrolls franchise.

    • @Sicarius1604
      @Sicarius1604 Před 5 měsíci +11

      Well I think its better to have a failed starfield after 13 years of waiting after Skyrim, than a failed TES 6. Now BGS knows more than erver that they can't just use the fame of their games as a freepass, and that they absolutely need to make a good game to stay relevant.

    It feels like one of those things where the company is terrified. It looks to me like they know they can't deliver, too much time has gone by and now they are in the position of having a product, but no hardware to deliver it on. What happens if after 15yrs all we get is an updated version of last gen Skyrim, set in a sea of current gen games? What happens if the industry has moved on-in to a realm Bethesda can't compete with? Elder scrolls 5 was two gens ago, elder scrolls six was the weapon built to fight the last war, the only problem is the didn't actually build the weapon so now they have to catch up with 15 yrs of tech advancement. They wasted too much time on Skyrim, when they could've been sculpting ES6 for Xbox one, now we are on Xbox s and they have got nowhere to run, so to speak.

      i think they should just stick with fantasy, it's what they are most good at, making any other game in the creation engine with it's limitations just seems like a bad idea.
      also not to mention games like skyrim were only good because the foundation of the writing was good from the first writers of the games series of the elder scrolls and they significantly fixed some gameplay aspects to work better than previous titles, Emil was only taking their previously established work and making fan fiction of it to make skyrim, and it turned out well.
      it seems whenever bethesda try to make games in sci-fi that their writing goes in a funky direction and there are way to many limitations to the game's engine and what's possible in that engine to realistically try.
      like they couldn't even really simulate space travel, they just skip it as if it wasn't a space game, it was a load screen simulator game, i mean arguable most of their games are load screen simulators, but they had the knowledge base and capability to simulate these things to a degree in the same engine, but they didn't because they thought it was boring, but the real reason is because the engine has to many limitations for the kind of space flight they first envisioned.

    I don't think Bethesda's game design is outdated at all. People would not be going back to Skyrim, Oblivion and Morrowind if that was the problem. Especially Morrowind which is still praised to the heavens but is objectively more outdated in a lot of ways.
    No, the problem is that Bethesda has not been FOLLOWING their own game design. They have been simplifying their games and stripping out more nuance and RPG elements ever since the transition from "Daggerfall" to "Morrowind." And they have been trying to force in poorly used procedural generation ever since "Oblivion" and going on until this day.
    "Starfield" isn't terrible because Bethesda's game design is oudated. '"Starfield" is bad because Bethesda isn't following their own game design principles anymore due to oversimplifying games and relying more and more every year on procedural generation for pure volume.
    If TESVI returned to their roots and reintroduced the more complex RPG elements of Morrowind and Oblivion alongside the perks of Skyrim, reintroduced the nuanced storytelling of Morrowind, the creative side quests from Oblivion and started hand-crafting more things again and stopped relying on stuff like radiant quests, TESVI would be a game we'd all love.
    Even if it had shit combat. Because Bethesda games have never had great combat and they don't need it. It'd be nice if they had better combat, sure. Although what counts as "better" is somewhat debatable. But that's not at all the main issue. "Fallout 4" probably had the best gunplay out of any game in the series, yet how many people prefer Fallout 4 to New Vegas? Very few. Because people don't play these games for the combat. They play them for the RPG elements, the exploration and the story.
    If you strip out RPG elements, create a world full of repetitive procedurally generated crap and make the story a bunch of poorly thought out ideas connected by radiant quests you are stripping out the soul of the game. And no matter how good you make the combat or update the animations, it still will never recapture the magic of Morrowind or Oblivion or even Skyrim.
    Edit: To be clear, when I mentioned New Vegas I wasn't implying Bethesda made it. I know they didn't. I wasn't saying that New Vegas is more of a Bethesda game than Fallout 4. I was just making the point that in general the people who play these games don't play them mainly for the combat, but for things like RPG elements. And that's true for both Bethesda and non-Bethesda RPGs.

I personally think they should but from their perspective they've got fanboys who will buy anything they put out just because they liked Skyrim when they were kids (tends to be that era because people who played the older ones first seem to be less forgiving interestingly). So why would they put effort into a game or modernise when there's really no demand? Not only that people who do defend Bethesdas lack of effort always say "modders will add that" or "modders will fix that" and people just accept it. But you wouldn't keep buying the same make of car that was crap and keep saying "don't worry the mechanic will fix that". There's something unique about Bethesda fan boys in that they don't demand a quality product and Bethesda see that and they know that they can just rely on modders to in essence make their game for them because there's no demand from the studio itself

Every Elder Scrolls fan past and present knows what ES VI needs to be and if history is any indication Bethesda will fail to deliver. That's not to say that ES6 or even FO5 can't be done very well on the creation engine. As long as they're hand crafted games done very well and they live up to Bethesda's strengths and what ES fans expect. But Starfield on the creation engine? Oh God. The shading is off and the mouth is at a weird angle, but your eyes dart around the detail in the architecture, the smiles and expressiveness in the background characters. You are blown away. "This is amazing!" You say, and they light up with joy. You can see how they will keep at it and really be something special, outstanding, one day.
    But its been 20 years, that kid is 35 years old with two decades of industry experience.
    They hand you a picture that looks nice, like other stuff around, great shading proportions, etc, but the eyes just aren't right, the character stands at an odd 3/4 angle, and the background isn't a vibrant city with architectural details anymore. Signs are wood with indistinct squiggles on them. You look at the background characters, they are all wearing the same outfit with minor color variations. The smiles, faces, glares all replaced with nothing but the vague shading of a face. "That's nice" you say, unable to hide a tinge of disappointment.

The things they used to be industry leading at, have been done better many times over now and they have not risen to the competition. I’ll always have a love for fallout 3, oblivion, & Skyrim but Elden Ring, Cyberpunk, BG3, and the witcher have all slaughtered them in world building, graphics, writing, gameplay, build crafting, and narrative consequences. There are so many suggestions that could make for TES VI that in my opinion would make it a much more immersive game than what Bethesda has been putting out in the past 10 years, my first suggestion would be character creation, take inspiration from the Skyrim Mod Alternate Start live another life, and give players the ability to flesh out their characters backstory just a little bit by adding the option to choose a profession for your character that will effect your starting stats and equipment, my second suggestion would be to take inspiration from older RPG titles like Fallout and Fallout 2 and make the main questline have weight to it, make it possible to fail in multiple different ways including having an invisible timer whereby if the player doesn’t complete the main questline within a certain time frame whatever world ending event the player was supposed to prevent comes to pass and the game ends, and including a similar timer for most other quests for example, taking too long to complete a fetch quest will result in the quest giver giving up on the player ever returning so they hire someone else to complete it or do the quest themselves. Third, bring back player choice, give the players as much freedom as possible to play however they want don’t railroad players into playing a certain way by offering them the illusion of choice like in Fallout 4 where players were given choices that basically boiled down to Option A) Agree, Option B)Option A again, or Option C) Disagree but do Option A anyway.

    Skyrim worked because it game out in the golden age of gaming. You didn't need to login through a launcher to start up the game, there was no extra content you had to pay for, games weren't bloated with excessively complicated HUDs and inventory systems, and while it had less class customization options than Oblivion it was still designed with RPG players in mind as its first and foremost audience (which actually ended up attracting more than just RPG players). It was a simple yet focussed game: you start it up and you go, and you're behind the wheel at all times, just like a classic adventure game with RPG elements.
    Adding to that, Skyrim also came out in a time when games weren't being used as political tools. There were social issues which mirrored our own (civil war, dunmer refugees..) but the game always let you see good and evil in both sides. Things such as homosexuality plainly existed but were treated as normal everyday occurrences, not being put on a pedestal or being shoved down your throat to get a point across. With TES6 this just might not be the case, if it turns out to get very pushy about controversial, divisive topics such as "pronouns", references to real world elections and ideologies.
    With TES6, unless Bethesda are willing to forego game design choices which have become "standard" in modern games but which nobody likes, and go back to something more simple, the game is bound to fail.

    Actually, I'm not someone who agrees with you. But I also feel it's very important to hear other viewpoints on things like this even fi I don't agree with them. I didn't enjoy Starfield as much as I thought I would, but I still think TES 6 could be great.
