The Netflix dub cast were reading their lines with a script in front of them.
The ADV dub cast were reading their lines with a beer in front of them.
They were using things like rough fan translations.
It's less of a reflection of the translation work so much as the voice direction. The Netflix/Khára dub was so focused on getting the wording right they didn't ask if it sounded natural in English. It wasn't a lack of talent by the Netflix cast, far from it.
And remember, these are just the cherry-picked examples of the ADV dub, many would argue it diminishes the original's themes by injecting comedy where it wasn't since the norm at that time was any change was good so long as it was funny, regardless of whether it fit the scene or not. It's why almost all the scenes are from the less serious slice of life segments as opposed to the more serious battles

I think they wanted to, but Khára wasn't going to budge. They wanted things their way and according to them the ADV dub "wasn't to their standards" hence why they hired their own translator and did everything in house. Netflix just carried it

@@NexusLore Personally, I think so. Also, at least they tried. Keep in mind, this was when Anime dubbing was still somewhat in it's early years, so you should expect it to be a little rough around the edges. They had to use what they could work with at the time.

I’ve heard someone say this dub starts at a 6/10 and raises itself to a 9-10/10, while the new VSI dub sits at a solid 7-8/10 the entire runtime, which is a pretty accurate assessment I’d say. This dub will always be better though.
In my opinion both dubs are decent although I’d have to say that the newer dub is my personal favorite probably because I’ve only heard clips of the original dub. So obviously I’m biased.
@@speinz9430 No, the Netflix dub is awful. It’s ultr-literal whereas the og dub was actually localized. The Netflix dub also sounds extremely flat. It’s correct, but lacks emotion. I’d say 7 is generous, more like a 6/10

Keep in mind that the old dub was recorded in 1996 while the redub was done in 2019 (so, the new dub should be held to a much higher standard). Taking that into consideration, the new dub is pretty meh, while the OG dub is a classic.
The thing is when the OG dub gets “serious” is when the series’s tonal shift fully hits. The first half of the series is supposed to feel like a somewhat child friendly mecha, then the tonal shift hits you upside the head. Imo the cheesiness of the OG dub helps with this tonal shift

as someone who's only ever seen the sub, I feel like this completely changes the tone to a more comedic one, i should watch this omg
nearly all of these clips are from the first half, and even then, from only a few episodes that are just naturally funny. the tone of the show drastically changes once eva becomes more serious.

The ADV dub has it's moments but good God I would never recommend someone watch it if it's their first time seeing the show. The Netflix version is just so much easier to get immersed in though I do miss a few things from ADV.

Netflix really shafted the ADV dub when they promoted the heck out of NGE, and it also did the same with Gantz and Dennoh-Coil (both of which were also dubbed with Matt Greenfield as the ADR Director) by making them sub only.
There's something so pure but also raw about this dub that when the dark shit happens, to me, it hits harder; feels more authentic somehow.

Considering the ADV cast never saw the entire series before they were cast and started recording, the earlier episodes being very cheesy makes a lot of sense.
They got more into character as the series progresses.
