Bette Midler, is just at that point in her career where she can say whatever she wants to whomever she wants whenever she wants and it's just canonical. I don't know if she had prepared her speech beforehand but even so she peppered it with little things about the unsung heroes of the stage, the make-up artists, the costume designers, the set designers, the music director shows that she was paying attention to the little people. If she came up with this at the spur of the moment this is truly epic.
She's been performing live for 50+ yrs . She'll do & say what she believes needs to be done and said . For all her bawdiness. , the woman is pure of heart .
Love Bette. One of her early collaborators was a dance teacher of mine, after I'd seen Bette in Concert in Forest Hills, NY, circa '84. And I met Bette after a Yoko Ono Birthday Concert at BAM. On a Zero Degree night of ice, Bette chatted with me for all of 30 seconds as she tip toed in high heels over the ice to her waiting car that overshot her theater exit door by half a block around 2am. She was alone, and friendly as can be. And funny! Of course. Thank You, Dear Bette Midler.
@@iago07 I'm sorry that I don't exactly know the circumstances, but Bernadette replaced Bette when Bette left the show as it continued. I saw them both and, of course, they were both fantastic. So it might have been that Bernadette was in rehearsal for the replacement when she filled in for the sick Bette.
That is highly unrealistic, I'm afraid. I seriously doubt that she will return to the stage anymore. She made it clear that it was straining at her age and took months to recover - even though she was very happy she did that. And we fans couldn't be happier that she did! But she said she would like to slow it down. I do hope she will make a couple of movies after this Hocus Pocus 2 airs and God I pray that she will return to the final season of the Politician - but I'm afraid that's it, at most. She will soon turn 77 and I don't think she will work after 80. So... if we are lucky, we may have a couple more years with her (when it comes to her career I mean). Then we have to say goodbye, even though it's sad for us - and bittersweet. She has more than earned her retirement years. I know I will miss her terribly... but at the same time I'm grateful for everything she has done and happy for her. Like she said somewhere, she has earned her rest. She absolutely has.
You don't play off someone when they've climbed to the top of the mountain: could be Oscar, Tony, Grammy, etc...especially when it's the Divine Miss M, that's a big no-no
Let us not forget Stella. She was kicked right and left in that movie but never gave up on her daughter. It was a remake of Stella Dallas with Barbara Stanwicke but I will never forget it,Beaches or The Rose.

You don’t kick the Divine Miss M off the stage. You just don’t.
Not even if you try real hard .
Why hasn't this Woman won an Oscar? Give her five please
For the Boys was Oscar worthy!
“The Rose” was a legendary portrayal. But IIRC, that was a tough year with a lot of very fine competition.
It was beyond wonderful to see Bette in Dolly. She was wonderful
Bette should’ve won a Tony for this speech alone! She really is inimitable.
Bette I love you more today than yesterday! Shut that crap off! 🤩
Coming full circle. What a gift for fans. There will NEVER be another talent of this spectrum.
What a great speech!!! God bless Bette Midler

what a class act.
Bette's way overdue for an Oscar! For The Boys, The Rose should have won her 2! So many lesser actresses has one! Its a travesty!

More awards than Donald Trump will ever have. He probably bought his rewards or stole them.
