That little yellow hand plain is great! I need to find me one like that! Fatwood is a staple in our lives on Vancouver island in Canada....we live in a Douglas fir rain forest and the stumps are absolutely loaded with the Fatwood goodness! It's my goto fire starter out here! Thanks so much for sharing this one! Cheers, Kimmers and Jerbs #BEUP #DSKFS #neverquitquitting #22ADay 👍🏼🇺🇸🔥🔪🔥🇨🇦👍🏼
Hello Greg! I just found ur channel... this is a great idea! Now I want to go out n get some plastic containers for my fatwood... after I process some like urs! Thx for the idea! I sub'd!
+Turtle Bushcraft When its cold and inclement and greg doesn't want to go out in the weather, the mind runs to thinking about things around the homestead and farm that are flammable and explosive and good for getting a fire going. This morning I soaked some corn cobs from the pen, in lighter fluid and soaked them in beeswax. Keep you posted whether it worked.
I don't think 🤔 I added enough scrapings the whole thing is hard but creamy when shaved. Did I accidentally boil out the rosin? Only lights if there's a bundle of exposed fat wood in wax curls. Is this supposed to be ferro ignitable or do I need an open flame to catch it then just use as an extender for starting in the wet?
@Ricky Mellottsr yeah it's just the exposed resin drying up which is only a thin coat and even when I take dry resin powder, it lights right back up and melts into a gooey resin once again.
Thanks for stopping by. Stanley makes a variety of cheese-grater-type tools. I thinks they created them for the auto body industry. Got this one at ace hardware and have seen it at walmart. Works great for shaving fat wood. What is maya dust? Is it a bushcraft word for fat wood shavings? All the best Greg
make shavings a whole lot faster w a chainsaw... piles.... n minits! put n dollar general bags ... till processing... stay wet for long time.. how dun n ga anyhow... homeiswerumakeit...ebody knodat🍻🙏✌🤗
Why? I leave my fatwood like it is, in pre-processed sticks. They need less space and no dry storage box. When I need some of it, I scrap some of it. Same thing like making / carrying tons of charcloth or junkwood tinder: imo absolute nonsense! A stripe 1" x 20" of canvas, rolled and coaled in a matchbox-sized mint-tin makes enough tinder to start 10+ fires, so why the heck should I carry more than 1 roll of proceed charcloth? With every fire I have, i can make a fresh batch/roll of it. There is no reason to carry tons of it - I don't need tons of it!

Florida fatwood?? wow, for some reason it never crossed my mind that fatwood would be in florida...wow.
When I lived in Fla we called it Lighter Knot.
One of Florida's first industries (long before citrus), was turpintine... made from - yes, pine trees. lol
Great vid bud! Just an fyi try s Smith's tinder maker. Been using mine for about a year. Great product gonna try your wax thing tomorrow great idea!
When my fatwood dries up it doesn't smell as pretty anymore but still burns as well.

Smiths 50635 Pack Pal Tinder Maker with Fire Starter works much better.
